Smartphone Season is Coming Early This Year!

This week, Marques is back to discuss all of the news he missed last week (and a bunch of new stuff too). With David out on vacation, Marques and Andrew do Headlines in a Hat and go over everything from the Surface phone that never was to icon theming in iOS 18. The Ioniq 5N is plain and simple for fun. 0-60 in 3 seconds flat (this is in tests, which is faster than advertised), and 123 MPH 1/4 mile at 11.1 seconds. It also handles amazingly well. The range is 221 miles, which is the biggest drawback imho.

I’m visually impaired and Firefox is the first browser that would remember your text and zoom numbers for each website! Which last I checked safari still doesn’t do.

​@@ColoringKaria Firefox is also the only one that allows you to zoom the text only, without changing the layout. Sadly, this one is a global switch, because some websites work better with text scaling and some work better with full zoom, depending on how the styles were written.

@@cmmartti I know it’s a pain that’s it’s a global change so what I like to do is increase the txt as little as possible for the global change and then go to individual website and play around with the zooming. In recent years web developers seem to have more a sense on how their zooming will work so text heavy website images don’t seem to zoom as much as they once did which is great for maintaining an appealing layout and so on.

Ioniq 5 N is for a car enthusiast with a 30-50 mile commute that has the disposable income for a “silly” electric car. They have a project car or two and maybe a truck. But they want something fun and easy to driver around town. That heavy shifting sound in the first mode is a simulated sequential dog box. Look it up. They’re cool as hell and sound insane.

I think it's clear that the IONIQ 5 N is just a replacement for the Veloster N (given that the fake exhaust sounds just like the same turbo 4cyl). They wanted to create a new hatchback, make it electric which is what the IONIQ 5 was, but then fill the void they left in the hot hatch market when they quit making the Veloster. So this is just the baby of those two ideas. It's going to interest people like myself who love hot hatches but maybe aren't fully into the idea of a silent electric future (hence adding the sounds and feeling of gears), while still being appealing to those already invested in an electric future that just want a fun car and have money to throw around.

I wouldn’t exactly compare the IONIQ 5 and the Veloster. It’s definitely not the “replacement” Veloster. They’re in completely separate classes of vehicles and price. I mean, the IONIQ 5 is more than double the price of what the Veloster cost. People that would’ve been shopping for a Veloster aren’t buying an IONIQ 5. Plus, the IONIQ is WAY bigger than a Veloster. It’s longer, wider, taller, and has a longer wheel base. The Kona N was a great replacement for the Veloster and much more comparable.

The frustating part about Apple is that they could EASILY have a standard/pro mode for the customization. Standard: what they currently are giving. Pro: do all the customization as you want. And make it a toggle that can let you revert back to whatever you want. Its not by force to customize, but the option is what people want.

Firefox being open source and great on Linux is why I use it. On Mac, I like arc. Windows, I use edge. Linux is Firefox. They just feel right for the OS. If arc worked on Linux I'd never look back

I not only change my Wallpaper on my Android daily with different accent colors but also I take time to pick some matching images from Unsplash once in a couple of days. I don't think I will last a week in iOS as how boring it would be for me... Honestly Android 12's Material you implementation is underrated! yes, I am using mods to force themed icons since not all the apps support that feature which is annoying. Also on Android 14, i change my clock style once a couple of days too.

Ellis, Volume knobs on keyboards have to be infinite, otherwise your volume would have to be hard locked to your keyboard. Otherwise what would changing the volume in software would take the keyboard volume knob out of sync. You cant have a fixed knob connected to anything that can then be changed with other software or hardware. Yes? Love your passion about this btw!

I'm definitely one of the people that customized my iPhone with the shortcuts 😳😂. My apps are monochrome so it matches whatever wallpaper I have and icons are minimal shapes.... I like it because no matter what app developers do with the default icon (color and actual physical shape), I still have my desired look of apps. That being said, I don't plan on using the built in color customization 😬

For the Ioniq 5N: I wonder if-not on THIS car specifically (since, like you mentioned, it’s a track car)-the *tech* from this could be adapted to get people comfortable with transitioning from ICE to electric. Like, I don’t have a CVT (yet); I imagine that will feel weird, because I learned on a manual transmission. Going from that to electric would be a learning experience. This might make it easier?
