Right? I didn't realize the 8 Pro had symmetrical bezels until I watched this video. I know it's a small detail, but for me symmetrical bezels add a little bit oomph to the overall design of a phone. It's almost as if the designers really wished to leave no detail untouched, which is great considering we're talking about a $1000 phone.

I think the OS support got heavily factored into the price. I don't know how long they would keep this promise as this could potentially eat into future sales, but at the same time, gives it a second life as a kid's device, media device or whatever.

I think maintaining software support is important of course for security, but also in terms of keeping it fresh. While hardware gives a new tactile touch and feels new… so can a new case and a new software update. Software updates give new features and just keep a device interesting (not just for phones but devices in general).
@vipul_singh
@vipul_singh 8 ай бұрын
Very interesting take! So far, my opinion has been: 'why don't they just provide patches, instead of OS version upgrades. OS version upgrades bring about too many problems anyway'. So more in line with Win XP + 7 years of patches, or Win 7 But your comment makes me think that OS version updates are also part of keeping the device interesting, and therefore making people hold on to them longer. Truly appreciate your post.

I know this was an early thoughts video, but I do see this Pixel 8 Pro as an upgrade. I'm coming from a Pixel 6 Pro. When I bought the unlocked phone from the Google store, I traded in my Pixel 5. I compare the price of the 6 Pro to this year's bundled deal from Google for a new phone with significant features + a free Pixel 2 watch. But time will tell if that's true once independent reviews come in. I'm excited. Great video.

@@AMakki7491 Wow, almost an upset response. It's still a nice upgrade. New phone, and some new "trinkets" and I didn't pay anything outlandish from what I paid for in relation to the Pixel 6 Pro on launch. SO in my eyes, I deem it a worthwhile purchase. I won't know until I get my hands on the phone and take it through normal usage. But I know I'll get great usage from the 8 Pro and watch.

@@fatalradiusdoesn't really matter. One of the reasons apple dominates the market is long term support. It's also part the reason why their resale value is high. The confidence in knowing that you'll not be left out should you for any reason decide to retain the phone is very important and with time would boost sales, which is actually the target. Even users that change phones yearly would typically prefer a brand with long term support

I am very glad Google and Samsung are extending software support but I wonder if it will choke out some of the already dwindling competition in the industry. I know some people who didn't buy Motorola phones (I think) despite being interested because of the tiny 2 years of software support back in the day for example. I wish LG had had more software support, didn't squander the potential of their phones after the LG-G4 (say despite being a G5 owner) and was still around to be a competitor to Samsung for example. Not to say Google or Samsung shouldn't do this it's amazing, but wish the others would compete

I love everything about the Pixel 8 Pro except its size. Large devices like this are just cumbersome and clunky to use...at least for me (and others I'm sure). I tried out the 15 Pro Max this year thinking its size and weight improvements would make me feel otherwise, but nope. Returned it and went with the smaller 15 Pro, which still has plenty large 6.1-inch display but is simply much easier to grip and use with one hand. Really wish Google could take a page from Apple and offer its Pro model in two sizes. I've heard that's what they're going to do with the Pixel 9 Pro next year so here's hoping that's true.

Great points at 4:44 - I take photos and am always questioning the line between too much editing and a natural shot. I think for some normal life, photos with friends at lunch, it matters a lot less than like wedding photos where the event and the real-life situation and the real memories should take priority over how good the photo looks. I know some will opt to look "perfect" in a wedding photo, and I think that's an unrealistic goal. I much prefer candids.

I'm upgrading to a Pixel 8 Pro from a base Pixel 6. That phone is still working great, but battery life can be suspect at times and the fingerprint scanner sucks. Other than that, I've really liked it. The interface is nice and clean and I've noticed no performance issues. I'm mainly looking for the telephoto lens and hopefully better security stuff (fingerprint scanner that doesn't suck, face unlock). I was tempted to go to iPhone after getting a Mac Studio and Macbook Air over the last year, but this seems like a good line of demarcation. I do like being able to customize my phone and get more out of it for the money. In my opinion, the pre-order deal (free watch) and decent trade-in for the Pixel 6 made the price worthwhile.

The 8 Pro looks to be a great phone. Only downside i currently see is the charging imo, with 30w it will probably nearly two hours to charge which just isn't up to date anymore. If they fixed all the issues the 7 had i might still switch to the 8 Pro.

The best take thing is actually really cool to me. I totally get your perspective on it and I actually agree somewhat, but technically those faces that are being swapped around are still the faces of the individual & were taken just before the shutter was pressed if I'm not mistaken. So it really isn't to dissimilar from top shot. I could definitely see it being helpful with animals or kids where you only have a split second where they are looking at the camera.

Hey Dave. You have a valid point about the software support. But the fact to be considered is a Pixel Device is a True Match to an Iphone as the parent companies control software and hardware parts of these. So I don't see any problems in terms of software updates. Hardware limitations might prevent software feature updates but security updates should be fine.
@eon_mp4

This is it, I might just buy for the software support alone. Not that I would even keep it for that long, but it's cool to know that I could rock this for 4 yrs and hand it off to someone (maybe a friend/family) and they would still have 3 yrs
@raizo6895
@raizo6895 8 ай бұрын
Exactly. I'm the type to switch brands or model every 1 to 2 years but I still prioritize long term support. If I decide to rock the phone longer for whatever reason (like I did with 1st Gen iphone SE), I need to know that I'm covered so this is a major win imo.

Apple only says 5-6 but still supports devices at 7-8 years on average so if google actually does this and sticks with it they may have a lot of Apple users jumping ship to give android a try. This could be good for all users in the long run because it will force Samsung and others to update and support their devices longer.

I'm cool with the flat display, but definitely like the more squared look on my 7 Pro. Something you won't notice much with a case I guess. How ever, I pray that G3 processor ( exynos) is much better. I do like my 7 pro, but I do often experience either poor Ram management or the Processor just can't handle 2 or more things open simultaneously. Fluidity and speed is my number 1 importance, so a little disappointed with that

The moment you mentioned google could remove the 7 years OS support,.. i feel the likelihood too. And i dont think with longer OS support, the phone resale value will hold. Its afterall an android. And google doesnt have the same design or ecosystem or simply lure like apple does. Im sure they know people change phones in 3 to 4 years, way before the 7 years. So 7 years could be a marketing tool. But i cant imagine using the pixel 8 pro with its chromed metal for 7 years - its gonna so scratched up by then.

Hi Dave, I wish on your Google Pixel 8 review you will include the Social Media camera test. I've been looking for videos like this and it seems that this is one area that is always being ignored by Google phone reviewers. Main question 1. Is the camera now optimized when using tiktok, FB live etc, 2. How does the social media camera usage in Google Pixel (or quality) vs iphone. Iphone has always been optimized in real life usage when it comes to Social Media Camera usage.

Being as I ordered the 512 storage option, I'm sorta blown that Google didn't use UFS 4.0 and instead are using the much slower 3.1 Like, why??? Also I'm a bit let down that the screen res took a hit too, altho I'm hoping the brightness will make up for it. I don't know about anyone else but when watching HDR content I find the screen is too dim to really enjoy it. Everything else I'm excited for. Good job, Dave. Keep em coming! 👍

Google never gives you everything, it's always something like UFS 3.1, lack of some sort of audio support, bad fingerprint sensor, poor speakers, bad modem. Tons of great software features, nice thinking outside the box, but the fundamentals are always lacking. What aspect of this phone or software will be dropped by next year.

my hot take about the best take is that it's actually a good use of AI in images, it's not like generating an object that is completely not there before, it's literally just replacing your head with your head from a different picture that was taken in the same moment. literally just cropping your head into your own picture but with a help of AI so it's faster, easier, cleaner and doesn't need a heavy photo editing app.

I bought the Pixel 7 because my Samsung S10 had issues with the USB port and it was old. However, after using the 7 for a year, there was no improvement over an older S10. There are many aspects of the S10 I still find that made me keep it instead of trading it. I am not a fan of the curved edges but I lived with it. The size of the S10 was perfect for me. The camera features are just as great as a newer 7. The sound of the speaker is louder. It records better. I was trying to record a bird recently and it was just barely audible on playback. And there is no headphone jack. There are more complaints that just should not exist on a much newer phone. I doubt I will ever stray from Samsung again.
