My brother taught me about spreadsheets on a Commodore 64 back in 1984. He used to do the Buffalo, NY budget on one back then. When you wanted to calculate, you had to press the calculate button. While that was working, you could go make a cup of coffee and drink it. I use Google Sheets mainly for financial calculations. I have an investment sheet, a spending sheet, and one for taxable dividends and other distributions.

Love the "Chapter" format at the bottom of 'Show More'. I have assigned this video a spot on my main screen speed dial. Lots of things I forget how to do, and this is a perfect go-to. Especially like the instruction on Calculations and Sums & Functions. ( from an American who went to grad school at UBC in beautiful Vancouver many years ago)

Wow, you really are experienced and have wisdom about what you are talking about, like you are not just simply providing high quality content or value and having us to accept it but you really showcase the importance in it and really share your experience with us and wisdom and truly help us grow and learn from the value provided, instead of just simply informing us, like you really do more, than that, with a lot of tutorials that I follow through with i am often left feeling clueless at what to do after, and be thinking I am really stupid or something after because I don't know exactly what is best to do with the knowledge gained. I know you are supposed to get what you put in, but to put it simply you are a great teacher, i am confident that I will actually learn and grow from following your lead, because you really meeting me where I am at, "a beginner" and helping see things as you do. I wish more content creators on KZbin were more like you.

Between Trello and Google Sheets I run a professional production kitchen complete with recipe costing, inventory and production scheduling. Some features of Google sheets that are great (besides being free) are: sharing with other people/teams, conditional formatting, multiple sheets in one file, and unlimited data storage.

I just learned Basic spreadsheet using Google sheet taught on Coursera. Never knew it'a that powerful even though used sheet to create my simple budget. I was bit daunted by almost at the end when it was like learning coding as it has it's own syntax and coded language. I barely pass the course as I skipped when it came to the 75th percent of the course. I wish there is a course using the newer or updated sheet. I just want to learn again but, not with the outdated coursera lessons. Can you recommend any. I am also learning the google's Data analytics course and wanted to learn the google IT support course. I just finished the first month of the Data Analytics course and I have five more months course to complete. Do you have a say in choosing the Data Analytics over the IT support. To be honest I want to learn the one which easier and simpler. I have been watching your simple tutorials and enjoyed thoroughly. Would appreciate your advice. Thank you.

One thing that would make a great video as an advanced tip for spreadsheets... R1C1 notation instead of the default A1 notation. Makes things WAY clearer especially when you start using relative verses fixed notation. That $ in things like B$7 or $G12 is for the birds.
@dottotech2 жыл бұрын
Great suggestion!
@martyshmanka2 жыл бұрын
I am curious about this notation. I have only ever known the $ feature... what do you mean by R1C1 exactly?
@1WhoConquers2 жыл бұрын
@@martyshmanka A1 notation specifies the cell by the column letter (A, B, C, etc.) and the row number (1, 2, 3, etc.), identifying cells in the form of A1, B3, F14, and so on. Another way of representing a cell is R1C1, which gives the row number (R1) and the column number (C1). In this format, cell A1 would be R1C1, and cell B3 would be R3C2 (because B3 is the third row in the second column). R1C1 uses two sets of coordinates the first part (starting with R followed by a number) defines the row number and the second part (starting with C followed by a number) defines the column number. Absolute referencing does not use any symbols, instead the "normal" format is absolute reference, the default reference is attained by using a number in square brackets [] (R[-1]C[-1] means the cell 1 row above and 1 column to the left). A couple of examples (assume that cell that references are written is cell $B$6 or R6C2): $A$1 = R1C1 $C$15 = R15C3 Why is it better to use in formulas? Simply put and I can't stress this enough, the same formula is written the same way regardless of which cell it is written in. Example: Imagine you want column D aka C4 to include the sum of columns A aka C1, B aka C2, and C aka C3. Kind of hard to put a table in a comment, so picture each cluster of three rows below to be one row in a three column table. Notice how the A1 based formula gets unweildly real fast, but the R1D1 based formula remains the same (because it IS the same formula).... Result Cell Formula A1 Formula R1C1 D =$A2+$B2+$C2 =RC1+RC2+RC3 D3 =$A3+$B3+$C3 =RC1+RC2+RC3 D4 =$A4+$B4+$C4 =RC1+RC2+RC3 D10 =$A10+$B10+$C10 =RC1+RC2+RC3 D100 =$A100+$B100+$C100 =RC1+RC2+RC3 D123456 =$A123456+$B123456+$C123456 =RC1+RC2+RC3 Now for the sad news. Excel lets you easily switch notation types. So does the free open-source LibreOffice if you're on Windows or Linux. As I just found out by testing, apparently Google didn't think it was important. You can't switch easily to R1C1 as the default notation, but you can still use it in formulas via the INDIRECT function. It seems a small thing, but when you're working with it daily it's a huge difference. Kind of like the difference between using a Qwerty keyboard (what everyone learns in high school) and a _Dvorak_ keyboard layout. Which is built into Windows and Android, but most people have never heard of it. If you're a touch typist, it's five times as efficient in terms of keystrokes, and as a writer I won't go back to Querty.

Steve, really enjoying your instructional videos. I"m a beginner with Google sheets. I recently built a spreadsheet, but when I tried to print it out, it was so small, I couldn't read it and people I sent the sheet too, had the same problem. What's the solution to that?
@dottotech2 жыл бұрын
Chose "normal" in your print box when you chose your printer, and make sure the font you are using is large enough, google tries to print on as few pages as is practical

For Example : I have my working data on google sheet with 7 columns a thousand rows and in my 4th column has a city's name and I want to insert a blank row after the city's name change in my google sheet. Excel has that option to select the whole sheet and insert a blank row but I am a new user of google sheet and it's difficult for me for my work. I hope you help me for this matter

There’s only 2 things that can go in a cell, and that is constants (numbers or text) and formulas. And that’s it. Dates are numbers and calculations are formulas. So TWO things not less, not more.

This is probably simple, but it is driving me crazier than I already am. I am 79 years old, the the old eyes are not what they used to me. Is there a way to increase the size and maybe even bold the font on the formula. I just can't see those tiny faint characters. I really enjoy your video's, but this is frustrating as heck. Thank you.
