Google Sheets: Performing a Chi-Squared Test

This video explains how to perform a Chi-Squared test of independence on a two-way table using Google Sheets. The techniques will also work on other spreadsheets.
The intended audience is IBDP mathematics students, particularly those taking the Mathematical Studies course or the new "Applications & Interpretation" course from 2019.
The video shows how to calculate the test statistic without using the built-in functions.

Thank you! I needed to understand this test for some statistics I need in my master's thesis. This video made it possible for me to perform and understand the chi test. I have one question though, do you recommend any alternative to chi test for tables bigger than 2x2, which have observed values lower than 1? I cannot find anything that I could do in Excel.

Hi, presumably you mean you have zeros in your "observed values" table. That shouldn't be a problem unless it causes to to have too many low (less than 5) "expected values". It's not really a problem about the spreadsheet, more about the conditions for the test, so I suggest you read up on the theory behind it. One thing you could do is to combine rows and/or columns that only have a few responses, but I can't help much without more information.

Thank you! Sorry to tell you that, if the two values aren't the same, then you've probably made a mistake in the formulas, and you'll have to check each one. Sorry!

What if one Of the numbers is zero?

That's more about the test methodology that the spreadsheet. If an observed value is 0 it might not be a problem, but if an expected value is 0 then there might be a problem with your data collection. You should probably just ignore the row/column of the table which has nothing in it.
