You can also just turn your old WiFi router with built in gigabit switchport into unmanaged switch, you just have to make sure you disable in old router settings WiFi, dhcp, routing and assign it unmanaged static IP address from google WiFi. I have my own google WiFi connected to Linksys e3200 running on Advanced Tomato firmware.

Dude I have a EA9500 Max-Stream AC5400 my only main router until I get google wifi fiber this weekend and I still want to use this router and I have a switch as well but my router doesn't allow any custom firmware. So what were the steps you did to prevent this double Nat crap I keep hearing about? I have a switch as well I'll have to probably change the setttings thru the web base for linkysys vs the app I think there's more options that pops up. I just know google support said google wifi is not compatible with non google devices hmmmn I think it could work if setup right.

His router is currently on one end of the house and is hardwired to net gear powerline to the other end of the house. Then the net gear beams across his driveway to his shed. I tested the WiFi via Speedtest. The office closest to router got 40mb. The other end of the house next to hardwired powerline got 12mb and shed got .1 lol. After short research looks like I will have to set a unit as the main unit and connect the satellite units either wirelessly or to the LAN ports of the main units, however, if the main unit is limited to 2 Ethernet ports (like google's case) I can use a switch to expand main unit's LAN and plug all satellites to the switch. My original thought is I can eliminate masterslave units config and treats all 3 units as satellites (i.e. hook all 3 units' WAN port to the switch, then switch uplink port to a wifi router's LAN, then router's WAN to cable modem), but looks like doing that will lose the mesh feature (it won't hand over devices from one unit to another seamlessly). Hi. Thanks for the uploading the stream. I am going to get some NAS tech when the new Synology 720+ is available. However I am debating how to do this and wondered if you had any thoughts. Currently I have router => google wifi mesh. I am trying to work out whether to move to option 1 or option 2. Option 1 being router => google wifi mesh => (smart) switch. OR Option 2, router =>(smart) switch => google wifi mesh. My NAS would be hanging off the Switch with either setup. Can you think of benefits or disadvantages of either way?

Has anyone noticed degraded hardwired speeds? I will be using the mesh set-up will all of them hardwired.
@CheWey863 жыл бұрын
I've had the 3-point google wifi system (1st gen) for over 2 years.. I definitely noticed slower speeds over time and some devices dropping connection during "Prime hour/peak days" so to speak. I ended up finally adding a 5 port switch and hardwiring all 3 of my Google wifi puks. Internet modem > WAN (globe) icon on main google point > 5port switch back to 2nd ethernet network port on main google point > 2 other google puks hardwired back to the 5port gigabyte switch and BAM. Max internet speeds on all 3 puks when using wifi.

If you disable your WiFi networks from your rogers router it will give you a increase on your google mesh router.
@landonbaileytech3 жыл бұрын
I can’t say it will give you any performance increase. I have disabled the built-in wifi on the Rogers modem, and enabled bridge mode to allow a connection to the Google Wifi. As far as I know, you have to do that.

Once you add the switch can you still use all the google WiFi app functions?

Seems backwards. To maximize functionality of the switch, seems like you would take the ethernet out of the modem straight into the switch, then put each everything else into the switch including each of your nests

Every time I talk with someone from Google Fiber, they always tell me that the upload and download speeds are symmetrical. Those are damn sure NOT symmetrical. wtf?
@landonbaileytech3 жыл бұрын
I don't have Google Fiber, so that wouldn't apply to me

This is what I was afraid of :( looking at buying a modem and a router, now looks like I will need a switch as well. Oh well, looks like they are pretty cheap.

Still baffled! Google fiber needs to provide better customer support and not push their product then leave customers hanging. The google equipment in my home does not look like your equipment!!!!
