Editor-in-Chief of HuffPost Lydia Polgreen interviews journalist and novelist Ta-Nehisi Coates on the enduring legacy of slavery in the US and the inspiration for his new book, The Water Dancer.
Google Zeitgeist is a collection of talks by people who are changing the world. Hear entrepreneurs, CEOs, storytellers, scientists, and dreamers share their visions of how we can shape tomorrow.
One of America’s most prolific writers on race and culture, Ta-Nehisi Coates just debuted his first novel, The Water Dancer. Already #1 on the NYT Best-seller list, The Water Dancer follows the life of a young boy who was born into slavery. Earlier this year, Coates lobbied congress on the case for reparations. In 2015 he won the National Book Award for Nonfiction and received a ""Genius Grant"" from the MacArthur Foundation. He has also authored Black Panther graphic novel series.

@MARK PERRY Wow that's an amazing statement; all he did was state his feelings. There are no " racist actions" to be a racist you must have the power to execute a racist act which so called Black people don't have. Thus black folk can't be racist because we don't have the power to execute it. Now it also amazing that people are so quick to tell black folk to forgive and forget when America never forgave the Taliban ban for their actions. Instead went on to spend trillions to get revenge. The black rage is justified as to this day we're still captivity and oppressed; unequal wages, last hired first fired, police brutality, and unequal justice under the law.

He provides truth in the perspective that our ancestors were people who where kidnapped, tortured and enslaved ... definitely humanizes the experience of our peoples and should not be titled as “the slaves” who they were as a people. Vs “the enslaved” what happened to our people. However, The statement he the author made that lost me was his quote “If the depiction of the slave master is too evil it’s not believable “???? That seems to be a consistent problem with our people in general. As a people “African descendants of the enslaved“ We need to come to terms with the fact that every race of people do not think like us. Everyone is not capable of humane behavior. Those people have demonstrated time and time again from generation to generation, they are incapable of compassion unless it’s towards their beloved and pampered dogs 🐕 . The moment we understand and accept that is the nature this beast and his beastly woman as well ( “she devils “ do not get a pass either “Brothers”), we will be able to see those devils for who they really are and circle the wagons and strategize accordingly! This is critical to acknowledge and prepare for our futures. Black peoples, please Take your heads out of the sand and wake up to the enemies of our lives for centuries and their consistent and constant destructive behavior of violence towards us!

U.K./France took North America and Spain's Conquistadors like Cortez slaughtered and took South America...There's Pyramids in the Americas also oil and gold

Full climate crises ! The president is getting impeached because he doesn’t know how to be president because he wants the 5g 6g technology ASAP when it’s to spy and kill us and take our freedoms away therefore we are slaves ! Wake up man do your research some news is actually real you have to connect the dots we’ve been lied to our whole lives data is the new gold and the dollar is almost not going to exist no more paper money because that’s the ultimate way to track transactions! Clearly you don’t know what your saying and also we are in a trade war wich I can explain but I don’t feel like it because people like you make me feel that we are doomed because we are so ignorant as human being and we actually believe what we see with our eyes and stuff in that nature and JUDGE but don’t connect dots n research.

Why wasn't Dr. Claude Anderson present at the congressional hearings for reparations back in June? I think he would have been a strong ally in honing in the argument as to why African-american should be paid reparations. He broke this all down in excellent detail back in 2000 before the congressional black caucus. If this has happened then you need to resign and open up your own bussiness. There's a difference between low wages and free labor. Free Labor from enslaved Africans gave United States generational wealth for decades and centuries which benifits the oppressors and their families. 🤷🏾🤦🏾✌🏾

I don’t buy the argument. If I label someone a “farmer” rather than a “person who farms,” I’m not reducing their entire being to being a farmer such that I’m not recognizing that the farmer is a full human being with thoughts, feelings, and lived experiences. The reason why the word “slave” is so powerful is precisely because we all recognize that there’s a full human being behind the term. The word “slave” already incorporates the humanity of the slave-powerfully so. We all know this. In other words, the only difference between “slave” and “enslaved person” is that, in the latter, we’re reminding listeners of what is already obvious: that the slave was a person.

As an #ADOS, I personally would never consider spending money to tour neither USA plantations and their gift shops or any of the castles on the continent of Africa-which housed my enslaved ancestors awaiting their shipment to the Americas as SLAVES. I view it as an insult & sacrilege to my ancestors to charge their descendants to tour their torture grounds. Period. Plantations received our ancestors free labor & now they want their descendants to support plantation businesses. Pitiful!

“It always happened like this. This is what I had been told. Bored whites were barbarian whites. While they played at aristocrats, we were their well appointed and stoic attendants. But when they tired of dignity, the bottom fell out. New games were anointed and we were but pieces on the board. It was terrifying. There was no limit to what they might do at this end of the tether...” Excerpt from The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates

I am ready to move on to the bigger realm of things that happened . It's still not an open dialogue to speak on . It's still closed shut by the Government. The story is told in such a fragmented way. There were so many stories because it applied to so many people from various places and directions . There has to be some sort of atonement .

Tranfer of wealth to whites is a good way of phraising it and what needs to be done is a withdrawal of those funds and given back to their rightful owners which is the the community that have been torn apart and held back for the whites weath health and comfort. Those who think it's a victom mentality should try and see it in the way that if you have a bank acct and the bank stold 20% of your money that you worked for and were ugeting for the well being and wealth of your family. You would dam sure raise hell about your money. You would not say oh well that happened yesterday and I shouldn't see myswlf as a victom of a crime.

Thanks for this. Coates exudes wisdom. That said, the same thing is still going on in South America. To wit the coup in Bolivia where the indigenous majority has again been disenfranchised by US colonial interests and their wealthy tools in the country. What is Google doing about that? How far can public discourse be pushed in this regard becase national interest seems to go right against the spirit of this talk.

It may be "a color" that your mind reduces a people to, but the ongoing, measurable inequity is enough of a marker through time to identify the wronged party. The more the disparity grows, the less subtle and complex becomes the solution.

People who were never slaves shouldn’t be given money. But I do support a “universal basic income” supported by Martin Luther King and Andrew Yang. It would be more easier implemented than waiting for reparations and having to go through the court system. Also a UBI would greatly helped the black community.
@donnab.333

Wrong. People who were never holocaust survivors still receive reparations; native american descendants still receive reparations, etc. from the US gov't; & the list goes on to other groups who have received financial compensations from being harmed by this US government. UBI helps no one.
