My headcanon was that originally in the mushroom kingdom, goombas were mocked by toads because of their lack of arms and stuff. Bowser comes in, the goombas see the toads panicking and think "Hey- this guy scares those jerky toads, he's awesome!" and Bowser sees the goombas starting to cheer him on and thinks "Hey- these little guys recognize how awesome I am." One thing is, goombas seem to be effected by the powerups too, so I did have an idea for a fan game called "Rise of the Goombas" where after all this time, the goombas decided they'd have enough of being jumped on and steal ALL the powerups to use on themselves. And yes, I had designed goombas for every powerup imaginable. My favorite was the Invinciblity Star goomba who's running and looks like he's out of control panicking because he can't stop himself. XD (I imagine you would hear the invincibility tune playing and then suddenly this guy runs across the screen and tries to take a swipe at you)

Goomba is UNDERRATED. He was the first enemy ever encountered in the Super Mario Bros. Franchise, yet he is being treated like nothing. Koopa and even Piranha Plant get more privileges than him >:( Koopa participates in Mario Kart regularly and Piranha Plant even got INTO SMASH! Boos are featured in multiple Mario sports games (like Tennis, Golf, Strikers etc.) and Mario Parties, Hammer Bro is playable in Mario Party 8 and Mario Kart Tour, even Lakitu is in Mario Kart 7 and 8. A more rare species like Wiggler even made the cut in Mario Power Tennis and MK7. But Goomba, THE most well known, iconic Mario enemy? Only playable in Sluggers and Super Mario Party... Gommbas are SOOOOOOOOOOO good at swimming they killed me about 5 TIMES!!
