Longevity researcher Valter Longo is one of the world’s leading experts on fasting. He’s the director of the USC Longevity Institute and the author of The Longevity Diet. He’s known in part for his exploration of intermittent fasting and the five-day Fasting Mimicking Diet that he developed in kit form. Elise Loehnen asks him to break down the phenomenon of intermittent fasting and share the forthcoming science that he’s most excited about-the lifestyle interventions that could have massive impacts on how long we live and how healthy we are. (To learn more about the nonprofit organization that Longo founded and to donate to research on aging, age-related diseases, and integrative therapies for the prevention and treatment of major diseases, head to CreateCures.org.)

I haven’t dealt with any type of serious disease however, Intermittent fasting changed my life in a very positive way. It has been very beneficial to my health as well as helped me regain control of my weight. By the way there is no starvation involved in this lifestyle. It’s about feeding your body foods that satiate and nourish during the eating hours and then allowing it to rest from processing so that it can focus on healing and restoring while you fast. I hadn’t realized how much harm my endless snacking was causing. I feel healthier than ever and my doctor confirms this.

This excerpt is poorly named. It never addresses what is commonly referred to as "intermittent fasting", i.e., time-restricted eating.

I just saw the episode on the goop show where Valter was saying something to the effect of hoping that they will teach nutrition in med school. Well, I have excellent news for you Valter: they have been teaching that since Hippocrates and I have never been to a check up where I wasn’t asked about diet, activity levels and stress. So, I’m not sure what you’re bringing to the table that’s new but best of luck.

It’s about emphasis...and US doctors generally emphasize drugs over lifestyle. But your anecdote is noted.

It's the level of nutrition taught, only a handful of medical schools have a minimum requirement of 25 hours. It's not given the importance that it deserves.

He's talking nonsense I had roughly 5 autoimmune disease chronic back pain including scoliosis degenerative disease etc... the list is up there. I could not take the pain anymore. I decided to try interment fasting. Within a week all my pains went away, plus i'm much happier. Whether it helps me live longer or not, the pain felt as though I was slowly dying.

That’s also what I think it doesn’t help you live longer but many live healthier which is what he said in the beginning. His interests is longevity

@@patriciagriffin1505 you're both a bit off. He is not denying IF benefits. He is simply stating that IF gives some benefits yet it also has potential drawbacks. But his point was mainly if you do IF in a kcal deficit you will not be able to reap all benefits. Yet the same time you're not able to be in a kcal deficit AND fast prolonged which seems to give all benefits. All he is saying here, eat moderately healthy, do if or not. But DO prolonged fasting for 5days+ for health and you will get all benefits. Im sick and hang around in very dark online places, and I don't think I seen 1 person get better by fasting below 6days. Yet all who did above 6 got some benefits leading to hope.

Intermittent fasting is just fancy anorexia

Nope, one loses weight to unhealthy levels and is very difficult to get enough nutrients. The other makes it easy to get an abundance of nutrients and keep a healthy weight.

Intermittent Fasting is eating nutrient dense foods in a short window and letting you body have a break from constant digestion mode. You can still have plenty of calories during that window. It is far from anorexia!

@@erikhancock98569 I thought when we are sleeping that's intermitten fasting, we don't these drs to tell us this, there are just too many experts, and instead of doing what we have done many years we are all going crazy. I can listen for a while then walk away from the pod cast. I could show all these experts how to live a long life. I am 76 no medication, very healthy my dr does not.like me at all, no flu shots, no covid shots. I take a b12 & vit D when summer comes again I will drop this. His company is coming up wit a bar, there goes your money. Why done these drs tell the gov. Not to give babies plus 5 year olds the vaccine, that would be the answer dr. Malone needs help to from drs ,plus these vlogers to help himbet the message across
