Technicalities aside, I assure you that you’ll be happier with the gooseneck now that your setup for one. I went from a 14’ PJ bumper pull to the identical PJ gooseneck dump, so speaking from experience. 100% Brock. My only regret was not going 16’. Although now that I also have a deck trailer, the dump trailer length isn’t as much an issue. I also can totally relate to prioritizing the “next” purchase. Seems like there is ALWAYS something I feel I need or at least would make chores easier eh! And watching everyone on KZbin does not help! “I need one of those”…..🙄lol

What you talked about at the end is my thought. It's easier to be more versatile with a bumper pull. If you are going to get into that much hauling of stone and dirt you are going to want a dump truck, I think. Or work will some one who has one to do your hauling for ya. The problem with that is finding some one who can or will haul when u want it and work with u. So it all depends how much you really want to dive into taking this from a hobby to a business. Great job , todd 🤪

The troopers I have talked to here (Illinois) will tell you a couple of things. First, this is only how these officers will handle it, they doesn't control other officers (both of them said that). Secondly, for non-commercial vehicles, they are looking at that magic 26,001lbs and under that, they don't worry about the weights, unless your trailer/vehicle looks grossly overloaded (using a Ford Ranger to pull 14K trailer). Both of them said for non-commercial they look at making sure your trailer is hooked up properly, lights are working, and that the load is secured properly. I asked about the tow vehicle payload and neither of them look at that except as stated above if you look grossly overweight. Instead they focus in on the 26,001lbs. So, that is what I have been told. I called out SOS (Secretary of State Office) at the capitol and asked them about trailers over 10,000lbs (unless you have a Class A license in our State, you are limited to 10,00lbs or less) and the gentleman I spoke with stated they don't worry about that unless you get over 26,001lbs. Which that is nice that they don't worry about it, but why not change the law verses having us all guess? Anyway, will be curious to see what you find out.

you are 100% correct in that most troopers will not raise any issues since your tow rating is a manufacturers rating not and so long as you don't exceed axle load ratings you should be OK. Here is the cavate, IF you were to get into an accident and you were exceeding the manufacturers tow rating a lawyer could say that your vehicles brakes were not sized properly and you could be negligent. I know that this scenario is highly unlikely but something to think about if it came to that.

I would put my pride to the side, learn from the lesson, trade in your truck while its still a hot market and get a dually. 3500 min, 4500 or 5500 is better, possibly flatbed. strip it down, keep cost down and have a true work truck that you won't worry about every single pound and you can work it hard. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGiXo3WljNVmjck.

I’ve been in exactly your situation….. years ago…. I kept every trailer I have ever bought first of all. Second my solution was to find a purchase a high quality no frills f350 diesel dual wheel rear end WORK TRUCK. I mean a really mechanically sound truck that wasn’t a pro queen for A ton less money. My reasoning has that it didn’t matter how many trailers I had but if my only truck went down I was out of business and couldn’t complete the projects that I had committed to complete, or one truck hauling gravel and my lighter truck hauling the equipment to the site. You will have a full time employee soon enough by making the site work a real business and would need another truck anyway. My 2nd truck was a used 98’ 4WD 7.3L F 350 with roll down windows. Easy to work on an still running today. A 2nd no frills diesel truck really cures most of what is ailing you currently and you can haul pretty much what ever you want and trade up to a goose neck dump. Good luck brother!! If you have to have problems….. growing pain problems are the preferred kind to have,! 👍

I am always happier to have weight centered on my bed axle rather than than on the frame via the class V hitch (or whatever you have). Specially when driving over rough terrain the bumper pull is going to bounce and make your truck feel like it is jumping around. The rear axle can act like a fulcrum and your steering can get sloppy. DOT regulations aside, you can always add some airbags or helper springs to the truck to prevent bottoming out the springs on rough roads. I would add airbags regardless of the type of trailer as they are great at keeping the truck balanced when you have a heavy payload or trailer. I have airbags on my F450 that is rated for 33k lbs via gooseneck and 20k lbs on the frame hitch. Regardless of the size of the trailer I can tell a difference when the airbags are properly inflated. This is just my opinion... based on my experiences with my trailers. Check local listings... lol. Interesting note: My payload capacity is actually less than an F350 as the F450 has a much heavier front end. It is why I went with the F450 - no 'death wobbles' or chattering from the front end on this beast! EDIT: I know... folks are going to say if you don't exceed your tongue weight it won't be an issue. To that I say bull hinky. If you are close to maxing out the trailer, there is going to be some action on anything that isn't paved and smooth. 😁

I appreciate all the info. My truck actually has airbags and rides well pulling 14k but it is much better on the gooseneck as you were saying. I just hate that the payload is rated so low For safety and performance I need a gooseneck but for Numbers on paper I guess I should stick with the bumper pull Thanks for watching

Its kinda a crock of shit, A gooseneck is way safer than a bumper pull. Every 1000 pounds of tongue weight on a bumper pull takes 300 pounds of weight off the front tires.

Before I ordered a tow vehicle I did a lot of research including visiting camp grounds and learning what folks would have done differently, that was quite the experience. Yes, I will take your invite and tell you you should have ordered a 3500. I have a 40 foot RV fifth wheel and a 16 foot dump trailer in gooseneck and a 3500 RAM Cummins with the rear air leveling system. Winner winner chicken dinner. I'm glad I did my reseach. But if I were you, I would keep what you have. Even though your bumper pull is worth more than what you paid for it, so are the new goosnecks.

That’s why I’m still trying to stay under payload. I’ve gotten at least 100 comments of people telling me that the payload rating doesn’t matter but if I were to get in a serious accident and the total value of my truck trailer and equipment was $150,000 they might ask a lot of questions

The biggest disadvantage in my mind for the gooseneck is that you can't use your truck bed. I've seen you load your tractor into the trailer and an implement into the truck bed. That's not gonna happen with the g/n.

Here's something to thunk about... my neighbor is a landscaper... he's riding a dual-y. He just removed his truck bed, and put a flat back deck on his truck ---- I couldn't understand why, and he said it was because he can bumper pull his Skid Steer, and then he could lift and put an attachment on the flat deck of the truck (The truck can also take a goose neck). That way he could drive all his gear to the site on his own, without another truck driver to follow him with skid steer attachments on another trailer. ---- Just something to think about! Cheers!

@T_Humphries
@T_Humphries 2 жыл бұрын
Everybody's situation is different but my opinion is you need to decide what services you want to provide. What is your plan for the skid steer? Once you have a direction you can look at what equipment will pay you back fastest. Will the gooseneck dump make you money faster than the bumper pull dump? Once you factor in your return on investment I think it will un-muddy the waters a little faster. Your opening clip is a good example, a dump truck that can haul an entire driveway worth of gravel might would fit your situation instead of spending your time making multiple trips to the rock quarry with a dump trailer. However, once you get your quonset hut erection business started up you may need something totally different LOL! Keep up the interesting content, I enjoy the variety of topics.

Thank you for your insight. A lot of good points in there. The plan is a heavy duty brush cutter, a Harley rake and a Grapple so that I can do finish grading or clearing I think really getting serious about it an older dump truck is the way to go. Spending more money on a dump trailer that’s still only holes 5 tons of material, which doesn’t go very far, probably is not the best idea

Brock, not so sure about the ability to back into a tighter place. I drive a tractor trailer for a living..I had a 32 foot camper regular hitch with the load equalizer bars. Traded that camper for a 35 foot 5th wheel toy hauler. With the 35 foot toy hauler hooked up compared to the 32 foot pull behind I am about 3 foot shorter over length. I was 55 foot 6 hooked to the 32 foot camper. 52 and some inches hooked to the 5th wheel. Sounds better right. I have an s curve in my driveway. The camper on the ball starts to cut around real fast when you turn the steering wheel. I could put that camper down my driveway and up on blocks in under 5 minutes. 90 degree (right angle ) turn off my little two lane road. It was no problem. Now comes the 5th wheel. It takes so much longer to make the camper start to turn. I have trouble running into the ditch with the front of the truck. The pick up is 3/4 ton Dodge 4 door 8 foot bed. Not nearly as easy to get in the driveway and harder than H to back around the s curves. I thought fir sure being shorter overall it should be easier. Surprise surprise WRONG! I NOW have to back in on the blind side and run over about 10 foot of my tree lawn. Sucks big time.
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 2 жыл бұрын
Good Point. My experience is It is a lot tougher to make tight turns pulling in somewhere. I can barely turn into my driveway with my equipment trailer. You can get by there if you kind of make it a three point turn but the way it naturally follows doesn’t. It does seem easier to back into a corner, Orthe back down long driveways, which is what I was thinking of.

Instead of trading just go bigger with a F-650 or a F-750. It feels like you are right up against the weight of what you can tow. It sounds like you want to get into bigger and better or at least bigger . You might want to either stay small or take a leap. F-750 with a dump, with the right trailer who knows what would happen

I'm looking for my first dump trailer and this was quite helpful, thank you. One of the main aspects that I'm looking for (and I've already decided I want a Goose Neck) is the ability for someone to back up and steal said trailer. Just about anyone with a bumper can back up to your bumper pull and off they go. It takes someone with a little more technical know how to steal a goose neck.
@RockhillfarmYT
@RockhillfarmYT 2 жыл бұрын
Right, although they do make some good locks that you can put on your receiver of the trailer, if someone wants it bad enough they will find a way. But fewer people have a gooseneck set up especially probably fewer thieves have a gooseneck. That aside dump trailers are fantastic tools you just need to be aware that in terms of rock and dirt they are going to haul as much as you might think. 5 tons of rock is not very much

I don't remember what the numbers were on my 19 f250 cc short bed 4wd diesel was but the payload and tow capacity was a lot more than my 15 f250 I have now. Crazy how all the numbers play out.

Yeah, and after looking at this a lot I think it’s not as much about the capability of the truck but about the manufacture having their own reasons for writing them the way they do. My truck has the same axels as a 3500 and it has an air suspension so it never squats. No reason it shouldn’t be rated higher

Don’t buy a flail mower or a land plane for your tractor. When you go to the national farm show you will see bigger and better tractors (yanmar yt359😉). Then you will buy tools for that tractor. On the dump trailer I would recommend you stay with the bumper pull. Reason is a gooseneck can not go on heavy inclines because it will hit the bed of your truck. The bumper pull can handle inclines much better since it can not hit your truck. Also the bumper pull is usually lighter than a gooseneck which means more payload on the trailer. Maybe Saturday we will meet at the show
