GoPro Hero 12 Black Review - Minor Upgrade, but that’s Fine

I’m not as tuned into what’s going on with GoPro at this point, but people have had pretty serious, ongoing issues with overheating and crashes in this form factor, since the hero 9. My guess is people see this as another small incremental upgrade and assume the overheating issues will still be a concern. I don’t have any experience with the hero 10-12 so I can’t say but that’s my guess 🤷‍♂️

The local tonemapping on GoPro results in a strange halo around human body when one is in frame. Very strange look

The daylight shots look great for the most part, looks like sharpening was set to low? Doesn't look as much as phone footage as shown in other reviews.

I used medium sharpening in this video, it works fine in most situations.

Thanks for the review. New to the action camera arena, I got a GoPro 11 last year. I was disappointed by how hot it got while trying to record a building construction project. I used wall power to keep it going, but was surprised when after just 2-3 hours it stopped recording. Also, am disappointed in how many times I've had to 'reset' the camera by having to remove and reinsert the battery. Quite 'buggy' IMO. Due to these problems, which should not exist, I'll most likely check out the DJI Osmo Action 4.

That depends on outside temperature, conditions and settings. 2-3 hours of continuous recording is generally considered to be an excellent result for an action camera.

@@TheHybridShooter Thanks for the info. I never realized that. Also, the continuous recording was done inside an air conditioned house - 76 degF just for reference. I have other cameras, a bit larger though, that would handle this. I just never realized it was an issue with 'action cameras' .

I think GoPro has reputational damage due to overheating and reliability concerns in the past. I watch a few travel KZbinrs and they've mentioned they've lost footage or had to stop recording due to overheating. Hero 12 may have made improvements in this category but it is tough for a brand to shake reputations damage perhaps enough to persuade more informed buyers to look at alternative brands.

gopro offers a discount only on the hero 12 so the hero 12 with the accessories bundle is 399 euro, and the hero 11, without, is also 399 euro. what is this pricing strategy making the previous camera more expensive to push the sales of the new one, even if worse, with no GPS?@@TheHybridShooter

Hero 12 black would have been a nice upgrade from the hero 10 black, but without GPS, it's an incomplete device to many that do outdoor sports, motor sports, mountainbiking...etc. I have GPS enabled everytime I'm outdoors.

Another great review! One major strength you missed on the 12 that's MUCH better than other Action cams, including DJI Osmo 4, is the compression of recording formats, as it will record almost TWICE the amount of FOOTAGE on a memory card of the same Quality than the competition. Which for us PRO's, not having to swap out cards can make a HUGE difference in a busy day of shooting.

Both use HEVC, so I don’t think that is the case, if you set both to HVEC. If so, it would mean that the GoPro uses lower bit-rate, which definitely wouldn’t be an advantage. I will take a look into it later.

This, I think, has discounted the “all phones are boring and the same, people are just bought in” narrative. I haven’t needed an action camera. I recently came across a “need” that justified getting one. I’m trying to just learn the state of the universe, but all the coverage is just about the iterative changes vs the 11, which I have no context for. The fixation on “should you upgrade” across everyone makes it harder for someone to understand ground state truth without being part of the ongoing news cycle.

It's not fine. Hardware is the same as the 11, apart from removing gps. So firmware/software updates. They could have delayed the 12 and given the updates to the people that parted with their money for the 11. Shame on you gopro

It is fine. You can simply pretend that it doesn't exist, continue using your Hero 11 and delay your purchase of next GoPro... that is how products with yearly upgrade cycle work. Hero 12 is not targeting Hero 11 owners.

@@alpher8962 What exactly is not true? It is better than Hero 11, there is nothing wrong with saying that. Nobody said that you need to rush and buy one if you have Hero 11, think of it as of Hero 11 for those who didn't buy one last year... they even sell it at discounted Hero 11 price.
