Instead of buying the GoPro 2018 I’ll wait and save up to buy the Hero6 Black. If I went for the cheaper camera I’d be constantly wishing I had the Hero6. I’ve learned from experience to get the best even if it means being patient and saving up.

Main reason I went with the GoPro was the fact that it was waterproof without a case and I don't need a case to mount it to my helmet or stuff like that. I could even bypass the waterproof functionality if I could mount the Yi without putting it in a case and muffling its mic capability.

It is funny, when you have only the budget for hero 2018 and then someone told ya to save up for hero 5. After a few months.. When you want to buy a hero 5, they ask you to save a little more for hero 6. There are possibilities u will miss a great footage. Maybe you go for a trip but u didn't buy a gopro yet, because of the voice that want you to save another 100$ for hero 6. Lol. My opinion.. Just go with your own budget bro. Then if you have enough money after that, sell your hero 5 and buy the new gopro. Skip hero 6 😶😊

Thanks for providing all this good info. I was looking at this but decided to go with GoPro 5 Black. I chose it because I use my camera for recoding dirt bike rides so I wanted superview, waterproof and to tweak some camera settings. I wont be recording in 4K and the natural audio on the 5 black sounded better to me than the 6. So I went with the 5 even though the 6 looked like it had a little better color quality. But this will be a massive step up from my Sena Prism Tubes. Thanks again. 👍

I lost mine, used it every day, very happy with the 2018, except when I shared videos online. The 2018 for some reason looks great on my iPad, but the playback from uploaded videos on KZbin and Facebook for example looks awful. I just got the Hero 6 Black, factory refurbished, for less than I paid for the 2018 model. As somewhat of a camera guy, it’s like the difference between a DSLR and a point and shoot.

You know the GoPro Hero 2018 is just the GoPro Hero 5 with scaled down firmware? I just got my Hero 2018 from Amazon for $157 CAD and flashed it to a Hero 5. So now it starts up saying its a 5 and it works at 4K 30FPS and the camera works at 12MP.

You can upgrade the firmware in the hero 2018 to make it a hero 5 for $100 cheaper bye. And also, if you want better picture quality, I suggest learning how to colour correct your videos and then it won't look as bad.

you say your disappointed with lack of functions on the hero, if they added all those functions to the hero that you say you miss, then there would really be no need to buy the hero 5/6!? as people would just buy the *budget* one! The hero is gopros budget cam so there are a lot of functions that you would find on the 5/6 model missing from the hero (as to be expected!!), if you want the all singing & dancing version, then buy the 5/6!

Thanks for all your videos. I have learned a ton. What edidting software are you using? I have tried Movie Maker, The Gopro one on my phone as well as a GoPro one that I downloaded to my computer. I am only videoing in 1080 so it should not be that big of a deal as my original Gopro hero clips getts edited all the time with Movie Maker. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Idk why everyone insists on using 60fps. I think it looks silly. Yes it has its uses when you want to slow footage down and you don’t have a native slo-mo mode, but for general use I stick to 30

The hero 2018 has same quality of hero 5 at the same resolution (a guy on yt demostrated they are the same camera with limited formware) so i do not know what presets do you use for exporting but it is better than the xiaomi yi for sure

GoPro have 3 hero devices for sale at 3 different price points. There’s no wrong or right choice just what suits your requirements. Not everyone needs every feature so to give consumers a choice without it being complicated is smart. They have everyone covered here. 😉👍

Is it normal you see black bars on the side, if you shoot in 1440p FOV wide mode? I just bought a go pro 2018 and found out the video has black bars on the side. It doesnt have it in 1080p medium mode.

Yeah mainly because I think the 1440 mode shoots in 4:3 aspect ratio which would cause some issues.

If you are looking to use it around water I'd go with the gopro. They all have roughly the same image quality but the gopro will be more convenient as its waterproof without a case 👍

Yeah I'd say if you can get a good deal on the hero 5 it would be worth the little extra over the hero 2018. The 2018 is missing too many features to be someone's only action camera.

I’m waiting for GoPro to update their processor so that the Hero can use the electronic stabilization, upload to QuikStories, and utilize all the different viewing angles @4K 60p, 1080 240p, and even 720 960p for a longer period of time before overheating. Otherwise, GoPro has a long way to go before I can see justify myself purchasing one.

Yeah I think the Hero 5 is still worth getting. The only main differences between the 5 and 6 is a little more frame rates and the stabilization. Those are awesome but not really required.

Buying a Hero 5 Black would be plain stupid. You can buy a Hero 2018, put a ''hacked'' firmware on it and basically get a 4K Hero 5 Black for cheap. Authentech - Ben Schmanke has a video on this topic. Search, saves some cash and doesn't make you feel stupid for overpaying. Everyday Dad, as you, I like helping people save some cash, but I think subtle comments like this are the way to go. Please do not make a video out of this, as I am afraid GoPro would end up patching something up in the firmware, making our modded HERO2018's unusable until updated to the normal firmware. Thanks! :)

For some reason your 1080p 60fps footage looks way more pixelated when MTB then I've seen on other MTB channels who film the same settings. KZbin compression or not high enough bitrate? Agree with a NO on hero 2018. Especially for MTB specific videos I say hero 4 silver/black offer the best no nonsense video quality :) Great videos as always though!

Im going hiking in Ireland and I really like the Hero 6 but its just way too much. I was leaning towards the Hero 5 when it was 250 on Amazon but now they increased the price to 300. So im thinking ill go with your recommendation for the Yi Lite! Do you think Yi Lite is good for hiking in an awesome place like Ireland?? In your situation I’d go with the GoPro. The main reason would be the waterproof nature without a case. I love the Yi Lite but if I’m going to be around water for any amount of time I wouldn’t bring it 👍

Its actually ONLY limited by software :D. So the camera etc is 100% the same. After the patch its 1:1 a hero 5. 12mp cam..

I have to agree with you, and your comments in this video. The new GoPro is a decent action cam, but its too expensive for what it does. My main action cam is the ActiveOn Gold. That camera is currently on sale here for $50. Both cameras have close to the same specs, but I could buy 4 ActiveOn Gold's for the price of 1 GoPro 2018. Having said that, I don't think I have to say anything more. (wink)

Yeah it works perfectly fine. It doesn't have any special connections, it's just a gimbal that stabilizes the camera.
