Turn off all non essential features while on the mountain, no gps, no WiFi, no led light, no voice control, turn the screen brightness down to 10%, use the screen lock. The beep can stay on especially when on helmet cam. This might sound counterproductive but leaving the camera on while riding the chair lift (only recording if you’d like to) can help prolong the life of the battery because he battery runs so hot. Turning the camera on and off over and over, drains it more, so if you need to turn it off, make sure it’s for a good reason.

Even I Arizona while snowboarding I go through 2-3 batteries for a day on the slopes with a hero 5 black. Same for my old Hero 2 though; That’s always been a huge weakness for them.

Make sure to update before leaving for your day! The freezing problem, could be a bad SD card, use the best one on the market. Things that don’t need to be on shouldn’t, do u really need gps? WiFi on the mountain? Turn off voice control, Turn the screen brightness down to 10%, use screen saver or screen lock. No led light. All of these can help prolong the life of your GoPro hero7.

Dude I have every single one of these issues and it kills me!!! One other issue I have it the GoPro Karma Grip and Hero 7 hate each other!! If it’s could out they refuse to work together but even in sunny days it’s hit or miss if the camera will turn on when you turn the grip on.

Dude I didn't even want to get into the Karma Grip issues, I'm about to buy a new gimbal. In Japan we couldnt get it to work at all (I think the cold was the main problem, it worked back in whistler) every time we tried to use it everything would turn on fine and then the Camera would just turn off. Couldn't even turn it on manually, super annoying.

You might try doing a "Manual Update" by (go to the website/click on the headphone icon at the top right/scroll down to the manual update. then taking the MicroSD card out and putting it into your computer. The mobile app has issues with updates. Then turn off GPS, Voice, Beeps for longer battery life. They also have insulated neoprene cases for the gopro that protect it from the cold. 1. Panning issue is fixed with the latest software update. 2. The freezeframe issue is still a HUGE problem, unfortunately as well as camera locking up in the cold. Everybody has these issues. Glad to hear it's not just me.

The date/time thing has always been a PITA on the gopro 4 black. I just got the 7 black and good luck with it so far (2 sessions). I keep the extra batteries in a pouch with a hand warmer in there for cold days. Keeps the batteries toasty and I've had good luck with that method. Thanks for the report TJ!

Battery issue is on every gopro. Once you work in -20C or lower, they all only work for 20 mins at max. I usually carry 7 batteries with me when I'm boarding. I've experienced similar issues to the screen freezing, or the whole thing freezing during recording on the 5 and the 6. I think it's all mainly to do with the cold because I don't have these issues when I go fishing in nice 23 degree days.

Ok thanks for posting this video. First, I have not experienced any of these issues and I’m sorry that’s happening to you and your friends. But secondly, the only issue that I am experiencing with this camera is how when I swipe up to view the playback option to watch my clips-the camera screen freezes on what ever it is pointing at and will not allow me to view my playback. This is an issue when you are trying to figure out if you nailed a shot or not

I feel like the GoPro and cold issue was even worst with the older models and seems to be way better in my experience with the hero 7. I do always make sure it’s not out in the elements super long and always tuck it inside my jacket on the lifts and whenever possible. Japan looked amazingggg btw!! So jealous!!

Yeah the gopro simply doesn't co-op with cold temperature. One thing that really helped for me is putting it inside the Super Suit. It helps blocking cold wind and helps retain heath that the camera generates. This also helps with battery life and video quality. You'd have to sacrifice audio and ease of use though. Whenever you don't use the gopro put it away alongside a handwarmer to keep it warm. If you still have issues with the stabilization glitch you should update the firmware. If the problem persists just put off the stabilization. Also check the gopro website for which SD cards are supported. Unsupported SD cards have a probability of freezing or corrupting data. Check for the specific product code.

hey if you wanna avoid the cold, come ride at timberline on a sunny day lol. 30s and higher temps. joking aside, do you think something like the WINDSLAYER may help with temps on cold days? the foam would shield some wind and snow slightly, and one of the complaints for it was that their gopros overheat using it, which isnt an issue in the cold, so maybe itll provide some sort of insulation to keep that heat in?

Same.. I didn't have much issues with the 5, but with the 7 I had issues with the video recording only the first minute and the rest is just audio. I reached out to GoPro they have a list of compatible SD cards so make sure yours is one of them. Another solution if that didn't work is to manually update the gopro even if you already updated it. Last one is to format the SD card. Sadly.. I wish this worked out for me but after doing all those, mine didn't work. Gopro finally said that they'll replace it for me. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️Goodluck to all of us, hope the next update fixes all of these

My biggest problem is with the GoPro software and the inability of using your SD to instead of Internal Memory as the default saving method. So, if you run out of Internal Memory on your Cell phone you CANNOT save video from the GoPro app to your phone unless your Internal memory is above 4GB free space.

I've got two Hero 7 Blacks and they both glitch when panning. Its annoying as hell. You really don't see it until you're back at home/hotel viewing it on the desktop/laptop. The mic adaptor is steep but the size really gets me, the thing is huge!

All of your issues i encountered them in Whistler and when i’m already boarding back to LA. My screen freezed have to pull tha battery to reset. I pressed the record to start filming and when I pressed to stop, it didn’t stop. Tried multiple times red lit still blinks so i have to pull the battery

There was one time i’m in Whistler as I opened my camera and connecting with Gopro apps, I was surprised the dates where dated 2016 while i took those vid 11/18. Onther issue is when stocked unused with cold temp, as I turned on, display is not showing all image. It’s not totally black it has scattered white pixels.

I can swipe left to right no problem to get to different video modes or photo mode and I can swipe down to get to my preferences no problem but when I tried to swipe up even after a factory reset and all of the current updates I can still not get my play back feature working properly the screen just freezes

The recent firmware update seemed to fix the panning with stabilization problem. I’ve always had problems with batteries dying early on the mtn. Cold temps and batteries just don’t mix. Recently bought the dual charger and I just keep two batteries warm and charging in my backpack. I’ve had problems with losing footage with cheap SD cards. I now use the San disk pros and I don’t seem to have that problem anymore. I’ve never had that date issue problem before on the 7 but I’m not going to 2nd guess myself and check some footage.

The footage I had did seem better but maybe there was something in what I was shooting that helped it be smooth. As others said below that GoPro says that turning it off for panning but that is not really practical.

I use my black 7 primarily attached to my windsurf boom in the Atlantic Ocean. Lots of salt and sand plus a pretty bumpy ride. Water in the 50s. No issues like you have yet.

got that issue too, I pressed recording when starting my ski run ( like 5min long) and when I arrived I checked the gopro and it froze, so I had to take the battery out. When checking the footage on my pc, only half of the ski run was recorded, then the image froze, but audio continued till the end.

Ive had the same problem with stabilization while skiing. The problem is that at the winter its too cold for go pro stabilization elements so it automaticly turns of. While I was skiing the temperature whas around - 15 celsiuos. Good luck!

Are all batteries doesn't matter what kind of camera you have. It will have problems when it comes to super cold or super warm. So far the only problem I have had is with the live streaming. One time it froze and I couldn't turn it off and had to pull the battery out.

Another i noticed i was filming 28mins inside the plane and 2.7k/60, noticed gopro went too hot and the battery. Brought to bestbuy since i purchased the 2yr extended insurance they just replaced it a new unopen box. But i believe the issue is still there in cold condition

Actually thats a well known issue with the gopro. If they shoot 4k or 2.7k they get super hot and need time to cool down, if the resolution is less its fine for those long periods. The good thing is if this means you board with it or do watersports its getting cooled by where you are. But its not ideal for long periods of time you need to shoot in high def.

@oKazaryo. Yup mine is GoPro 7, my first one. I agree if you’re on a sports action/motion the camera gets air flow from surrounding so it cools down the temp even when you’re in high reso. But if you’re taking still though motion but camera don’t get enough air flow to cool, it’ll get super hot. I called the customer support and they gave me random test prior to sending the unit to them. I noticed on the test required is to set the reso 1080/60. I didn’t do it, coz i thought bringing it to Bestbuy since i purchased 2yrs insurance. Staff from bestbuy said if i send to GoPro they’ll just send a refurbished.But with them, with my 2 yr insurance, they’ll replace it unopen box no need for test of unit.

Try the Sony fdrx3000, 1hour plus in the snow on a battery, optical stabilisation, power on to record in seconds, it has WiFi, gbs, live, comes with a tele watch, case 60m waterproof,. A bit more bulky but the 4K footage is mint!

Board Archive It’s my first camera so no real comparison. But it’s better;-) I’m just editing my first video but with a snowboard mount the footage is good, not too shaky so the optical stabilisation works well.. The downsides are it’s bulk. As a boarder I was struggling to know where to mount it. The top of the helmet is a no go I’d say as it’d look silly, similar size to a go pro but the camera is on the end. I tried a goggle mount but it gets half your head in shot, you could change the wide screen though. A bag strap mount was too left and right and wasn’t fun to watch. A great place I found was strapped on my left boot pointing left (regular). I should have some footage uploaded in the next few days so keep an eye out. Nothing pro, just a holiday it’s mates etc. First time video so you get to know what works and what doesn’t. Holding in the hand off piste tends to be a bit shite. Too much fun carving😀

Just got the seven and took it to the track for the day, first session it worked fine, the new video stabilization is awesome. Second session out we got stopped on a red flag for a few minutes in the sun and when I got back to the paddock the screen was glitching out hard-core jumping all over the place and the entire recording of that session was unviewable; meaning no saved file could be played. I figured it was thermal and shut the thing down for a bit in the shade and later it worked ok. The thing is I just traded in my hero five black to get this and never had this problem on my hero five black.

Especially the video cuts out then I only hear audio, also lost some good clips, I did buy Sandisk extreme card, and it seemed to help along with the new firmware update...they got some work to do though. Also haven't really noticed the go pro specific brand batteries being any better than the aftermarket ones i bought

On the Gopro's webpage they listed the compatible SD card for GPH7, and you'll be safe not to have some of the errors like freezing... They mentioned that on their page. Of course there's some other things to fix.

Correct. Hero 7 Black requires a U3 classified SD card. Anything lower and rest assure you'll encounter issues with recording at some point. Many people seem to forget that little detail - or simply don't know about it and then often wrongly blame their GoPro for malfunctioning, while in fact many of these recording issues can be solved by simply using a proper - but more expensive SD card. Also, a lot of people are diehard cheapskates and also use very cheap aftermarket batteries and chargers. Which too very often have been proven to cause issues. If you're going to use aftermarket batteries (and charger), please don't buy the cheapest one out there. Around the $40-$45 mark for 2 batteries + charger is what you should look for (and a 2 year full guarantee on it). Anything cheaper and with only a 6 month "guarantee" (at most) and you're bound to encounter SEVERAL issues pretty soon. Cheers.

My hero 7 black kept freezing the video in one frame but continued recording the audio... out of 10 videos, only like two were salvaged. I reformatted the sd card and tried again... same thing. Called GoPro support and they had no answer for me. They are replacing my GoPro, so I hope the new one works better. The issue only happened when I was skiing and it was pretty cold outside... if you ever figure out why it’s doing this, please reply or post a video on how to fix the issue. Thanks!

oh man sorry to hear, that is more extreme than what I have experienced and it is definitely a bummer. I think its most likely to happen when it is VERY cold outside. To try to resolve it I have switched to GoPro brand batteries only and keep 3 or 4 extra in my pocket to switch out once the battery hits around 40%. Also get the best memory card you can, I believe the best one available now is the SanDisk extreme pro U3 A2

I'm surprised gopro didnt test this camera in extreme conditions before releasing their product. I have the 5 and the 6 and never had these problems. Given they have a bunch of other problems like no external audio on 1 press record (hero6) and red light staying on even in standby mode.

An annoying problem that happens to me sometimes is I'll be filming in 4K at 60 FPS or at 2.7 and when I'm on the editing board the video will not load or only the audio will load... The video is still there but not detectable on the editor... You have to go to KZbin and Upload the video in it's raw form... Upload it in private mode... Then get a KZbin video snatcher download the video and from there you can edit your video... Downside is your video will be degraded in quality like from 4K to 720... But you can get it to 1080P with your editor if it permits it or any other video enhancer... Voila !

I have the GoPro HERO 2018 and I have the same problem where it’ll freeze and require me to remove the battery in order to turn off the camera. Also if I charge the battery in the camera it’ll die if I’m not careful enough to stop it from overcharging. I’m thinking about grabbing the Fusion and maybe trading in my HERO 2018 for the 7 BLACK. The HERO 2018 is a good camera overall but I’d really like one with GPS and HYPER-SMOOTH stabilization.

I have most of these problems. Super frustrating when the camera freezes and I have to pull the battery out to restart it. Also, the battery drains a lot faster even on days when it’s not that cold. I thought that it might be my aftermarket batteries but it does it with my GoPro batteries as well. I didn’t encounter these problems as much when I first started using the camera. After I did the last software upgrade, things got worse.

the most frustrating and confusing thing I have found is my hero 7 black CONSTANTLY freezing. The main reason is when I try to use the playback but it also does it at complete random times and it won't even shut off. The only way to get it unfroze I have to remove the battery, plug it back in, and turn it back on and then sometimes it happens immediately again. Super frustrating when all your homies dropped and you were ready to film the line on the camera you just spent $400 on and this happens.

You can actually reset it without taking out the battery, holding the power button and the record/capture button down for a few seconds will hard reset it back to normal.

I have the Hero 7 as well and it kind of blows my mind how GoPro still has issues like this. I remember buying the hero 1, 2, 3, 4 and all of them I returned shortly after because they just sucked with issues. I’m finding the 7 is the same thing. Random date resets, battery life is sporadic (mine is brand new too), video will become corrupt, troubles uploading to computer..overall GoPro is one of the buggiest cameras I’ve ever used. What a shame.

Does the time setting issue manifest when you have no (or dead) battery in the camera for an extended time? If so try to avoid long periods of it. And definitely try the SanDisk pro extreme cards to avoid glitchy capture issues.

SanDisk Extreme Pro seem to be the most recommended thats what I use as well. Yeah I think it happens when its really cold, and perhaps is correlated to the gopro dying or having to do a hard reset

To fix the stabilization turn off, put the GoPro in lock mode and only turn it off when needed

Sending back the Hero7 black. Wanted to record a lecture in one of my classes and take it travelling. My professor was caught in slomo.... audio went normally... to add insult to injury, gopro put "stories" in it, so there's some epic music while I watch my brand new camera fail. It stopped recording automatically, my longest clip was 6 minutes with full battery. THEN I try to retrieve the footage and gopro wants $5 per month for "Quik"... basically some editing features. I couldn't connect the camera with the serial number, I didn't enter it wrong, it was just stuck on one screen. Perhaps it's better on apple but I use Dell products for Electrical Engineering so I wanted it to work with what I have. Too many bad things make me say nope. Really a bummer because I've seen fantastic footage but if this company wants to slap you in the face with ads for new gear while you're trying to get your brand new camera to work and the footage is crap... return.

The most annoying issue I have with my GoPro Hero 5 Black is when trying to stop a recording when the battery is low. When the Low Battery indicator is on the screen, you need to manually touch the X on the red bar on the screen to remove it before being able to press stop on the camera or else the button just won’t work! I use my camera most of the time on my helmet and when I’m recording something and I want to stop and I realize that it is not making the bip sounds to stop, it is because the low battery indicator is on the screen, so I have to remove one of my mittens and try to touch the X while the camera is on my helmet so I can then stop the recording. I did that so many times that I already know without seeing where to touch the screen to remove this pop up but it is soooooo annoying, specially when the temperature is super cold and I don’t want to remove my mittens for no good reason.

i have two go pro 7, both of them randomly freeze. I was just in Australia, and there were no such temperature issues. Makes me mad that i payed this much for faulty equipment.

Did you do the firmware update? Solved a lot of the glitches. Also, make sure you use a U3 SD card. One other thing: when using aftermarket batteries + charger, make sure you don't buy the cheapest ones out there. They have been proven to cause lots of problems with the GoPro 7, and even with the original GoPro batteries when using the aftermarket charger. Try to find a brand that has a mid range price that carries 2 year full guarantee (and not 6 months at most, like most of the cheap(est) aftermarket kits). Cheers.

Mine i have issues with the batteries in a cold batteries dies quick, I used to have the time and date issue but I call for warranty and it was solved then in videos I see a dot dancing in a center of my videos

A pan issue fixed in the latest firmware (v1.71) - so upgrade. Also catched some of the glitches you described, but they are very rare, so it's not so critical for me. Great camera!

I have an issue that the hero 7 white restarts itself, the camera shut of and thr logo of gopro with a charge line apears, its a random issue, sometimes i can record well but someones i have the issue, i have an adata premier sdxc of 128 gb

For the 6th problem is settings run. and for the 7th the touch screen is not responding. 8th is the camera hangs. 9th the stupid clanky mic adaptor. 10th battery does not last. I am giving DJI a chance next.

I'm on the latest update (1.80), and today I ran into an issue where it was upside down on a suction cup mount in my car (1080p, 60, hypersmooth), and reviewing the video it simply pans off to the right to the max, and the video freezes.

Yup! I had the same problem whit the hero6. I used the gopro fusion and i had teh random burst foto. I had almost Every gopro from the hero3+ to the Hero 7 and use the hero4 silver the most. Because it never glitches

Love my go pro 7 BUT sometimes I switch it to timelapse by accident & don’t notice it until I get back & see that the clip I was hyped on I just a timelapse. Especially when you’re filming with a tripod and can’t double check the screen if it’s in the right mode. I guess that it should be somewhat harder to accidentally get it into timelapse mode or at least make it more visible then...

First trip I took to Banff with the 7, halfway through trip it turned off stabilization and changed it to 2.7K? I never even noticed until we were leaving
