I think that the firmware "updates" prior to the release of the next generation actually downgrade the older version. GoPro has resorted to other shady stuff, such as changing up battery types to get us consumers to buy more from them, rather than use our old batteries.

Thanks for your comparison. I currently use a hero 4 black for taking video with a kite (KAP) looking for steady videos and waterproof set-up. Weight not an issue. I usually take 1080p video in 120fps, stop when I like a scene, then screen shot for photo. Price of cameras not an issue either. Battery time is a priority.

It's a huge difference between a 6 and an 8, even a 7. So if you need good stabilization go for a third one, otherwise not :)

For the average person, would you recommend the Hero 6 or the Hero 7 for dirt biking. Rather not spend the money on the 8 because if I crash, then there went $400 due to a tree. I'd also do some studio shots, etc as I grow.

Hi Jan, great video again! I have the Hero 7 for about a year now and I'm happy with it. The only thing I'm missing is actually shooting 4k in linear mode. For that reason I'm thinking about buying the Hero 8. Also some other features seem to be cool like pre-sets, better Timewarp and Hypersmooth. I mostly use my cam to shoot travel videos. Hey Tobias, if you don't mind spending $300-400 dollars it's completely worth the upgrade, especially the linear field of view in 4K 30 (not 60) is great. The whole set up of the settings and so on is also better. However, it's still an expensive upgrade, but if money is no problem for you, go for it!

I'm going on a 3 week backpacking trip across SW China, which will include train, foot, plane, and cycle. We'll be in city as well as the countryside. I want to pack as lightly as possible and have something that will do as much as possible for me (in addition to a GoPro I am bringing a Fujifilm X100F). The GoPro 8 obviously has more features but I am not sure if I need the features for the bigger pricetag. What is your opinion? My highest priorities are sound, stabilization, and image quality.

The GoPro 8 has better stabilization, image quality is more or less the same, if you don't count the new colors, but it has also a bit worse sound. However, I can recommend the 8:)

Excellent video. I currently have a Hero 4 Silver and at the end of October my wife and I are going cage diving to see Great White sharks at Guadalupe Island. I was thinking of upgrading but I’m not sure if I should go with a 7 or 8. I’m not into sport or anything where it’ll be bouncing around excessively but I want super smooth video if I’m walking, running or filming from a moving car or boat. My dilemma is this; the 8 doesn’t seem to be available in Canada until end of October so I might not get it in time, but the 7 is readily available. What would you recommend? Would it be worth it to take a chance to wait for the 8 or will the 7 suffice? Thanks!

@jan klaeui I recently lost my GP7 and am looking to replace it. I mostly shoot aerial videos from a helicopter. I loved the picture quality of the 7 and the hypersmooth stabilization (although not the square cropping it would create) however I was very frustrated with a few issues. Mainly the reliability.. it would sometimes turn off while shooting with still a good bit of battery life remaining, it would very often freeze up, the connection with the GP app was very unreliable which meant I often couldn't control it from inside the helicopter anymore when I had it attached externally. All these problems were made worse by cold temperatures. I am tempted to switch platforms to the Osmo Action but also see that the GP8 picture quality seems notably better. What would you recommend?

I think regarding connecting the camera to the app all cameras play on the same level. Do you need that feature 100%? Because the turned on wifi could also be the problem that your GoPro froze all the time and that it turned itself off.

Since I can't access the camera in flight when it's mounted on the outside of the helicopter if I don't use the app I have to shoot the entire stretch of flight without being able to stop and start recording. If only some parts of the flight are interesting it means I waste a lot of battery and memory card space recording useless footage.

I sometimes have a hereditary tremble that rendered most of my videos as trash until I bought my 7 Black which is my first GoPro. This camera has changed my life. I can actually make decent videos now. While I will probably get an 8 I can see me getting another 7 Black because it works so well for me.

Great video. Have you used any of the mods for the hero 8 yet? It sounds like the mic might be good enough without the mod. Which mod would you get if you were going to use the 8 for vlogging and action? I want to get the 8 and maybe the front facing screen🤷‍♂️ any suggestions?

The go pro hero 8 have the hyper smooth 2.The color look also better without any correction in post production.In the final, do you think the hero 8 worth the money?Can I create better quality movie if I use post production correction and I add stabilisation and apply color filter etc..Thanks!!

It's worth the money, but better videos depend of you, not the camera. However, if you are a good film maker you can get better results with the Hero 8 than with a Hero 7 for example :)

Your triple camera mount is a bad idea for some parts of your test. It's ok when you move up and down or left and right, but when you twist, the camera in a center of a mount has much less to do - it has to deal just with a rotation, but not with a linear movement.

Great video as always. I use my current GP4S to film a bit of snowboarding but mainly for family events like xmas, birthday parties, holidays etc. I don't want everything to be in fisheye so I can enjoy the videos in years to come. I'm tempted to buy the reduced price GP7, but equally if the improvements are substantial enough I'll fork out the extra for the GP8. Which would you recommend??

I think you should go directly for the 8, if the (non) fish eye effect is the main thing for you. However, you don't make anything wrong buying the 7.

Hey Jan, love your videos. I am thinking of getting the Hero 8 or Dji Osmo Action but dunno which one to get! I like the DJI's shortcuts and very easy to use menu system but don't know if it's worth sacrificing better overall video quality. I am looking to get one for taking small videos while on holiday to put together into compilation. Which one do you suggest? (for me DJI is approx 80-90 euros cheaper). Thanks!

i don’t own a gopro yet and i cannot decide whether to buy the hero 7 black for 300€ or the 8 black for 400€. Right now I only have the Canon m6 I. I am a private pilot and I would like to start recording my flights and later cut a sick video and upload it to youtube. The style I would like to go for is similar to travel videos with two, three scenes of me talking but that i could record with my m6 and rode microphone so sound is not important to me. What would you recommend me? great video btw

If you don't care spending 100 euros more, go for the 8. Both cameras would work really well for you, but I think in a cockpit the light is not the best and the Hero 8 performs better in low light conditions.

great review. Did you switch the positions of the camera on the bar you used? for the stability test the camera in the middle would be at a big advantage as it is central to the bar so would be effected much less of your motions.

The GoPro has more natural colors in my opinion if you decrease the saturation a bit. I can't recommend you one for snorkeling since I have never used them for that :)

I'm planning on recording all day, so maybe 9 hour vlogs for my travels. It will be mostly indoors, handheld, without any mounts. I've been currently using 2 gopro hero 3's and they work just fine, but the audio quality is lackluster, the video quality is a little low, and I constantly have to swap out the batteries. What camera do you suggest I buy? I need something small so people wont notice and act funny just for the camera, so I was looking at action camera's but I could use any camera under $500.

Well you still need tons of batteries for all of those 3 cameras if you want to film for 9 hours. I would go for the 8

I heard you can use a portable power bank for external power, do you know if this is possible and if it will limit some settings like hypersmooth boost and live burst? Also what size card should i get for 9 hours? I looked at gopro’s website for recording time but all the resolutions have the same ~1 hour time for 64gb, this can’t possibly be right. Can you test to see what the file size is each resolution?

I ordered a Hero8 on the 2nd of Oct. GoPro sent a confirmation order number and today the 16th I checked GoPro and it says no order found. On GoPro's own website I see many other posts with my same issue.
