I think that this review was a bit biased towards the GoPro, the Osmo Action's advantages were understated and GoPro's disadvantages are almost ignored. Such as the terrible wind reduction audio, the significantly worse screen sizes, the non-removeable lens, and the terribly engineered battery compartment. And to top it all off, the Osmo Action is also significantly cheeper and you don't need to spend a whole lot of money on accessories. I think some people are just biased becuase they are used to the GoPro and just look past any other option.

GTA 5 color grading limits options in post.. atrocious battery life.. battery swells after few uses.. weak lower mount lets camera twist.. please guys dont waste your money. Dji Osmo has given me ZERO issues and you can record all day in 4k 60 if you desire. The Osmo beats the H8 in every category except low light conditions. For $260 its a no brainer.

Could you share some of the footage you've taken with the GoPro/DJI. I didn't see any uploaded videos attached to your account? I've had a Hero 8B for a few months now and I have had it overheat on me once... and that was in like 85F weather after 30+ minutes when I was kind of overheating myself in the summer sun. Battery life is not great, but I usually just connect my H8 to an external battery pack. My battery hasn't swelled yet. I have had some issue with the GoPro tilting when I didn't want it two... I attribute that to the stock thumbscrew. I bought one with bigger "wings" and that makes it easier to crank down. Aside from that I'm overall happy with the H8, but it definitely isn't perfect... so I'm interested in seeing what other people are using.

@DatingHawk.com If you're familiar with video editing and color grading... 100% choose the DJI Osmo for its raw video format... when properly graded the footage will always look better regardless of resolution. Please be mindful that the majority of the 1080p Hero 8 and Osmo Action footage you see on youtube is most likely shot in 4k and down sampled to 1080 as it should. If you want nothing to do with color grading in post and plan on only shooting in 1080p, then the Hero 8 might be the better choice as the footage comes enhanced straight out of the camera. But this also adds to the heat issues I mentioned in my earlier post.. adding that "gopro color" requires additional processing duties (in real time) from the camera which strains the processor, making it impossible to {consistently} shoot 4k/30 with stabilization on without it overheating. Most Important: Do not skimp on your Micro SD Card.. make sure the card you're using is rated: U3 / V30

Ignored battery life, and numbers of buttons. Both of those are really important for using these in more extreme environments where the touchscreen isn't usable or when you want to avoid opening the battery compartment (rain or in seawater). The osmo creams the GoPro in that department.
@matthewlewis64774 жыл бұрын
I have the Osmo. I love it so far. I prefer to have the flatter color to begin with in post. The deal breaker for me with the GoPro was the non-removable lens. If it gets scratched, you can't replace the lens. It is an action camera, you have to expect the abuse. So, if I scratch it I don't want to have to replace the entire unit. As for the mount system, how long will the tabs on the GoPro hold up before breaking? Another thing I couldn't risk. They are both great cameras, but I will stick with my Osmo for now.

The flare ("crazy line") you're getting around lights is caused by grease on the cover lens. Either that, or DJI ran some fine grit garnet sandpaper across the lens before sending it to you. Try cleaning the glass with alcohol and a lens cloth and see what you get. This is not the behavior of a HERO8Black with a clean lens. As for the stabilization performance, the Osmo crops the field of view more. That's clearly visible in your side by side stabilization sequence. If you use "Boost" with HyperSmooth, you get about the same field of view as the Osmo, but with better stabilization.

Honestly...if I was considering one of the new action mini-cameras....I'd heavily consider the Insta360 One R twin package. Heavily configurable, has all the stuff the Hero 8 and Osmo have, but you can put a full 360 degree camera module in it too. So basically...you get the full functionality of a normal action camera and a 360 camera for much less then buying one of each. Also...for the sensor snobs...there is a 1 inch sensor module for the One R that does MUCH better in low light and has 5.3k resolution. The screen part of the camera is flippable, so you can use it in selfie mode or standard mode. Its only real downside is it has the cage but if you wanna take it more then a few yards/meters under water you need to buy a housing for it, and each mode (4k standard camera, 360 camera, and 1inch sensor) needs its own housing since they don't work with each other (each housing is $60-80 dollars depending which one you get). 4k only version is very comparable and competitive with the Go Pro 8 and DJI Osmo at $299. The twin edition that comes with the 4k module and the 360 module is $479 currently. The 1 inch module version is kinda spendy at $549...but its in a class of its own so they can kind of get away with it. Adding the 360 module brings it to $750... but its a great combo. Definitely worth checking out IMHO. No affiliation... I've just been looking at a new action cam and that one came up as a very viable option.

So the summary is: DJI Better wind filtering. Better image for post editing. Better interface. Replaceable lens. Easier battery and sd removal. Cheaper price. Front facing screen. Worse low light performance. Camera cage. Less pleasing image without edits. GoPro Better unedited image. No cage needed. Better stabilization. Better low light performance. Worse battery and sd configuration. Worse interface. No replaceable lense. Worse wind suppression. More expensive. Worse post edit image. I don’t know if I missed a part of the video but, I don’t know how the overall preference is the go pro. If image impression matters the most then it’s clearly the go pro. Also as interesting is this is GoPros latest in a series of cameras and it’s not even a clear cut winner depending on your needs. This is DJI Action cam number 1. That’s a lot of expense go pro users have been through if they’ve ever upgraded their camera. I bought a DJI recently given their sale price with extra batteries. It seems nice so far. If I need the go pro image pop that can easily be edited in. But happy purchases whichever you buy. If the go pro was cheaper I think I would have bought it.

I must say that you're decision to opt for the GP8 if you had to buy one surprised me. And I would honestly like a hybrid of the two but since that is not possible, I went for the Osmo. Yes I wish I had the wider angle, though I suspect that can be fixed in future updates from DJI. Apart from that, is not much I like at the GP. The mount idea is good but that plastic is garbage man. ( no offence) It's an action cam.. it will break in no time. If they really wanted it a no case camera, which I agree is pretty much time to happen, it needs to have a screw type solid mount similar to Insta. The non replaceable lens is a deal breaker. Once scratched that camera is RIP. And no matter how tough the glass is, it will happen. Especially if you do climbing. I once dropped my camera, it sided on the floor and hit my ice axe pick right with the lens. While the colours are more vibrant and might understand while would appeal to the general public, most of the time is Orange.. like in really orange. Why would someone want that? So unnatural, especially when filming people. Battery life worse than the DJI. Accessories a lot more expensive. Needs specific micro Sd cards to work. Known long history of freeze, random shut down, etc. For Action, I cannot understand why someone would think that's a good camera. I'd rather buy the Hero7 which apart from the IS, is superior. And that's software which would have been an easy firmware upgrade. Of course this is a subjective opinion and I do appreciate you're effort to make the video which was quite good.

Its updated I'm also on my third different 125gb sd card 2x Samsung and sandisk they all sometimes want to format again and again. I have lost so much footage and mostly time.

Great review...I have a dji ozmo pocket to make my slot play videos..the small size doesn't draw much attention in the casinos and the gimbal helps to smooth it out..I've been thinking about getting the dji action as well...just not sure I need it...lol..Thanks for the info..

I have a problem with videoing on motorbikes i get a rolling picture its the same in other motorised situations . It would be nice to know if either will stop this engine noise. I still use a mobile phone with the wife holding on the rear off the bike due to this problem . And i cant afford to keep buying trying and binning crappy cams thanks

Nobody ever mentions that the DJI can't use 265 codec where as even my comparatively basic Akaso can . It makes for smaller files and is one thing that puts me off the Osmo .

The advantage of osmo action is the front screen removable lens and the battery it’seasy to remove unlike gopro.The gopro that I like is the supper view .

I bought the DJI for my main camera to get my KZbin started. I found with the led lit shop it struggled with auto frequency changes and the footage even in 4K isn’t very good. I don’t regret buying it but for home shop workshop videos I think I was better off getting something better. The tough life of being a inexperienced maker!

Seems to me that the GoPro is a bit better in both color and sound quality. I am not a pro video guy, so I want things to be a solid as possible right away.
