Quick question, if I already own a Hero 7 black, which I dont feel the hero 8 is way different in performance, do you think I should still update to a Hero 8 or a Max would be fine considering is a lot more different than the hero 7 and and 8, in the sense of 360 reframing features.

Great review. As a videographer I find the max as the better choice, being able to reframe later is an insanely cool perk. The ability to combine hyperlapse with slow motion and reframing later has some really neat tricks, for which the insta 360x became famous for. However even though I may personally prefer the max over the 8, I still think the 8 is the right choice for most people. For extreme sports anyways. For vlogs maybe cell phones are their best choice now and skip the extra cameras all together. For 360 video as much as I like what I’m seeing and hearing about the max vs the previous fusion, I’m still going to wait for the new insta 360 coming out and see how it compares against them. Bc the 360x kicked the fusions butt in so many ways. Now it looks like the max fixed most of the fusions issues but still want to wait and see just in case.

Short answer is to buy both! (and I’m sure this is what GoPro intended) Max doesn’t replace Hero8. There is no 360 cam on the market that can keep up, but there are a tonne of new and unique use cases for 360 cameras that make them special in their own way. I’m glad to see the Fusion has come of age. Great review

Yup, you can keyframe in both. In fact in the video I also show a bit of keyframing momentarily when I export it out and show the settings for export. Identical keyframing experience, just different controls (keyboard commands & mouse, vs touch).

This is an amazing video. I'm an automotive videographer and the Hero Max lets me reframe to angles I want. Granted, the imaging isn't sharp when you zoom in, you can adjust brightness and contrast in any editor of your choosing.

This is best refined comparison of the two gopro I have seen. Details and yet bullet points, which makes me very easy to see the two cameras difference and what they are purposed for. As an experienced gopro user, I simply anxious about getting to know what is the feature making the Max so cool, not the sample 360 degree immersed demo video. wow, nice wrap-up. I've already got a H7B but since I like to travel around a bit in SE Asia, I'm thinking of the Max for B-roll footage of what I don't get to see. My girlfriend can simply walk straight around with the Max while I'm filming with the H7B. yep! i see this as a great SECOND GoPro if you have the $$$ and the need. i agree the dream is someday you could have a "MAX" that sacrifices NOTHING of the normal Hero (except perhaps size) but gives you all the benefits and choice of 360. It's coming but probably 2-4 years away. I still like it, I think this will be a great niche camera for those who understand it and want to add it to the arsenal but I hope the family that just wants a single action camera to film their kids in the pool know the Hero 8 (or lower cost Hero 7) is the way to go and cheaper actually gets you higher quality.

Yes that would be good, got to send my one r back for refund. Using the fastest card (v60) I can afford and it still cooks it self. Real shame, I haven't seen many moans about the max regarding heat issues, may be because of the lower bit rate?

Maybe the max don't have full spec list, but come on, if you are creative, you can create some mindblowing effect, fake drone shot, etc etc. For an outdoor cinematographer i think i'll instant buy it and keep my 7 for all the immersive shot.

Correct, only 4:3 for 1440. For 16:9 you'll have to dip down to 1080p.

Man, that was a great, unbiased review! That is hard to find. I've already preordered it, and am a bit let-down about the limits of some features, but the main reason I ordered it is I need to be able to shoot 360 video I can depend on. I'll use my Hero Black 7 for the shots I want to direct the audience to, but 360 video of special scenic sites is my main objective. Excellant work!

As a Scuba Diver, I would have looooved to see an underwater housing for the Max (I've seen a video of the Fusion with a prototype that had the patent bought by GoPro. So hopefully one day...). Thanks for really good review. I consider to by Max, now. It is usefull for recording family/friends meetings, where people are close one to another. In this case you need not to turn camera around non stop, but you can keep camera on pod, motionless, and later, you can do video cropping/procesding. Similar on bicycle: gopro max could be sticked to bicycle handlebar. And later, during prcesing, you can easily change frame/view, from road, to yourself while sitting on bicycle.

Joe Bush I believe the new insta 360 is coming out pretty soon too. The max beats the insta 360 one x. Go watch any good review of the fusion vs the one x. Usually they all say the same thing. Spec wise the fusion was better but functionally the insta was better bc it had better software. The app was way better vs the unusable fusion app and the software for the pc you needed a super pc to run the fusion software. Since the max seems to have fixed all of the software problems the fusion had the max would win easily. But we do have to wait and see for the the new insta 360 coming out. As the max vs the one x isn’t really a fair comparison. It’s this years model vs last years model.

Hi. Did you find out how to record 6 mic sorround sound? With any settings i get only stereo sound. Fusion is not problematic about sorround sound. Great to listen on headset and spin around 360 vr video. Especialy on misic event like concerts.

Good review. I think your addendum at the end is really important to point out, and to rephrase it, GoPro was attempting to make the next generation camera from the Hero 8, but these are really for two separate markets. In my case I want to edit camera angles post production; I'm using the camera for interviews and can cut back and forth easily between myself and my guest w/o the need for multiple cameras. I should have a few episodes released soon on this idea. But in the end the two cameras are so different it's not really possible to say they are being marketed to the same niche

With the New Software the fusion just got a lot better. Now you are able to process and reframe (with keyframes) your fusion futage. I think it's great from gopro, that they Do let the fusion owners use the New Software (desktop and mobile)

I got the GoPro Max to replace my Fusion. I'm very happy with my purchase and ready to use it during my Cali trip next week. Also it wasn't worth it for me to upgrade from the GoPro Hero 7 to the 8 because I'm still happy with all the features of the 7 coming from the 5.

For me the reframing capability is the critical feature for the type of sports action filming I want to do. That includes kite foiling and wing foiling. If reframing over a large angular range wasn’t required, then the hero8 would be fine. I still use a hero7 in conjunction with my Max. They make a great combo😀

Great video a tonne of info, however, how is it as a 360 Camera? when you said you need to export from GoPro's app to get it into Premiere etc. Does this allow to export the RAW Monoscopic Video and Ambisonics Audio from the 6 microphones it has? From what I could see on screen it just showed the 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio options, but the view was stitched, I'm after the non-stitched footage to edit in Premiere/After Effects.

No, when you export from 360 to flat, you lose the 360* sound and it drops down to stereo. For non-360, you can take the 360 content and export it into flat files from the desktop or phone apps (desktop gives you higher fidelity). Or you can export it from 360 to 360 into FCP/Premier (you can't open the 360 files RAW in FCP/Premeir). For flat-files you can open them as-is. Hopefully I answered what you're asking!

I wonder if they'll make a way to open within Premiere or another editor to utilise the 360 tracks, I was really hoping this would be a one-stop-shop kinda device. The flat content makes sense, I'm guessing it just uses the 360 audio gathered and strips a Stereo master for that standard 16:9 file which is still cool but lacks VR viewing capabilities. I see some flare from bright areas (did you use the plastic bubble lens covers?) the other question is GPS - you said you can overlay it with the Gopro software??????? what software? I have 4 Gopro's and just got a Max. I'm having a hard time with what software. (phones are small and hard to see) for the app, desktop is better - but what software will work with the Max 360 footage and do the overlay?

Currently on a Hero5 and Hero6 and I use them mainly when travelling off-road on my motorbike. One is facing forward on my helmet, the other one stationary on pointing back. The big problem being that I cannot really plan when something interesting happens, so you need to film both angles (to keep down the footage and reduce battery usage, I have both cameras connected to GoPro's Smart Remote). For this use case, the Max seems to be perfect, except for technical limitation (frame rate and resolution) and the fact that it isn't compatible with the Smart Remote (really?!). Are the Hero's batteries compatible with the Max? Or do I have to sell everything and start from scratch? The other option is to buy 2 Hero 8s ...

After reviewing all the KZbin reviews on 360 cameras, this newb settled on the GoPro Max. After watching your video, I now realize I should have asked the question, "Do I really want a 360 video camera?" Upon reflection, I think I do. But I wished the Max had the greater resolutions and bandwidth you highlighted. I'm headed out today or tomorrow from Atlanta to points in California, Colorado, Montana, and Michigan by motorcycle. The ability to "just shoot everything", then frame it afterwards really appeals to me; especially from a safety standpoint. But hey, I'm going on an 8,000 mile motorcycle ride through the Rockies during civil unrest, a pandemic, and an election year....what could possibly go wrong? Stay tuned :D

Nope, not at all. I didn’t use them, and they degrade the optical quality anyway (though do protect it from scratches)

This 360 cam might be a super solution to the line mount issue a gopro has for kiting: when you fasten the gopro in your kite lines, you rotate the cam 180 degrees while flying the kite from one side to the other. The auto horizon function in hero mode or 360 mode might be a killer feature as with a regular gopro half the footage is upside down and constantly rotating. (I use a revl instead but that is also not 100% perfect). So I will test it tomorrow and who knows, for kitesurfing the Max might be a 95% vs 5% favorite 😜

I'm a 360 guy, so I got the Max, but I agreed with every word you said. Well done. 360 is a very different beast, and the Max has some drawbacks compared to the 8. So unless 360 is your thing it's likely not worth it. For me, it is.

I use a Fusion with my motovlogging, but it's my B-cam mounted on a motorcycle selfie-stick, and my Hero 6 Black is my A-cam mounted on my helmet. I like the features of both the Hero 8 Black and the Max so, if/when either of my current cameras die, I'll have good replacements available. Thank you for all the info you've provided :)

Also if you need to capture some fishing action, the max is the way to go. Especially if you kayak fish. I was lucky but took too many chances using my OneX for this and there were close calls when re-adjusting boom/selfie stick when it almost hit the water with no case on. And with venture case audio sucked and changing/charging battery was a pain to access with wet hands. Plus if I used a hero I would have to take the time to make sure I point the hero where the action is. With a 360 you’ll always get the faith fighting action no matter which direction the fish goes. And with the max I won’t have to worry if it hits the water by mistake. It’s a great way to capture fishing on a kayak. Don’t know why it’s not used this way more and I’m not a KZbinr so my content is not shared here. Maybe one day. Maybe with the max if I can get to that point. Again, nice work here👍

Hi there, Ok, I have a bigggg question! I've had the gopro's from nr 1 on, just the 8th I did not buy because I was happy with the 7.. BUT, now I am going to buy a new gopro, but I don't know if I should go for the max or the 9? I kite, winfgoil, surf, sup so sometimes I want to capture front and back for instance when he is in my lines.. or on my board.. then the max would be good. But the max does not capture high quality in hero mode.. that is better with the 9. And also the horizon levelling etc is better with the 9 and the max lens mode. But this lens is not available yet! Also I am not a fan of these 'globe' look on the max, but still would be easy that you do not need to look at your screen whether your aim is good...
