Him not carrying his own snowboard already told me he shouldn't be doing shit. Second hint was when he went alone. Then was the hesitation as to where to go, he didn't scout out where he was going or if there was any practical path through.

This is a very important video. It shows you what can happen if you think you can do what other professional boarders and skiers do, when you can't. His first clue should have been the snow blown conditions resulting in thin to non-existent powder and lots of ice.

Dude. I have snowboarded once in my life. I was butt scraping down a mountain just like this guy (except there were no cliffs and it was a clear hiking trail when the snow is gone). But when this guy first got on his board and you could hear his board grinding against the hard ice pack snow I was thinking that there is no way he should be trying to ride down this. Just turn back.

There was nothing but ice! The avalanche had clearly already happened. This was just the dumbest choices I’ve probably ever seen. Conditions like that are not only not fun, but absolutely miserable. Conditions like this is when you go get drunk at the bar and don’t even put your skis/board on that day or go somewhere where the wind hasn’t blown every flake off powder away. The only lucky part is that because of that wind, he luckily landed in probably 2 feet of powder. Just dumb. You’re correct about trying to start an avalanche with what he was doing and he damn sure would have if the conditions were there for him to trigger one. But bro was literally ice skating down a mountain in a snowboard

Maybe if you are going to do a skill sport . Then you need to show respect that you are a beginner and should remain in the boundries of abilities. Those are winter snow covered mountains. Every ski school I evey joined would not allow a beginner to the top of a big mountain. They are slippery things in winter. They are not punishing him. But some real advice is what he needs. It is not his fault he is only a beginner. But tragically it would be his fault if he died. A mountain may have gentle slopes as well as lethal areas. Off piste has a far greater potential for entry in to the danger zone. Off piste at lower levels is one thing. But in the high mountains it is away from resort security and may have been considered too dangerous to be open for most. So you are on your own. So you need the expertise for the level of terrain. The more experienced can see he is out of his depth. In one resort I observe tonights expected temperature is about minus 25 Celsius. Enough to freeze a novice or experienced person half solid before morning. So inexperienced skiiers skiing over an edge in to a valley can take them in to uninhabited Valleys in dangerous conditions. By the time you realize you are in the wrong valley you may have a 10 hour climb to climb out. If you lack basic mountain skills it could be spring before they find the frozen remains. So they do the novice a kindness by telling him he is a f'ing idiot to be trying to ride the back of a great white shark. The wildeness is not holywood. Where the film editor says: Take two.

I worked in a rental shop for 10 years and that is the Burton Progression LTR board. "LTR" stands for Learn To Ride. Straight rental bindings but people do own these. Most likely this board was rented that day. That gave me a chuckle as long as this lad is alive and well...physically.

Its not a cruel think to say, look how stupid this person is :D obviously would have trouble to ride a snwoboard on the piste and he goes off all alone obviously doesnt have any clue about the path and cannot even find one when he's there at least. He can only be greatful that there wasnt enough snow for avalanches, because if there was the conditions and his riding would be just perfect for triggering one.

easy to say he's stupid but its an honest mistake that can happen to anyone without experience of the mountains (taking a lift and skiing through them quickly doesn't count). Now whis to blame? Nobody but himself because everyone knows that skiing off piste carries even greater risk than normal skiing on runs. From the perspective of a mountaineer that terrian looks like some nice climbing (maybe even boring in some of the powdery seracs), but the thought of being on that icy rocky ledge without at least a piolet or set of crampons on hand is what nightmare's are made of if you've ever had the unpleasant experience of hopelessly slipping on ice toward danger.

Gabriel S. Who in their right mind hikes to the peak to do some unmarked terrain riding on rental boards. His looks to be rental from the sticker at the front and bumper guards but his friend in front is on a Button LTR board which is definitely a rental. It just makes no sense. Peer pressure can get you into those situations though but it was still his decision and when you look at how he is riding even from the beginning it's obvious he shouldn't be there. I'm sure on the way up it says unmarked terrain and had at least a black diamond but most likely was double black.

Everybody in the comments is talking about his reckless behavior, and I will too. Just something a bit different. As a hiker who has summited a few quite sketchy mountains and glaciers, I could tell just by the way he was climbing up the mountain something would go wrong. Even if it looks like there are good footholds from the person in front of you, always make sure they are deep and strong, unlike him. Also, on the scramble where there was no line, he should trying MUCH harder to get better holds. All around reckless, and thank you for your time.

This is my nightmare in this video right here. First time on a mountain no idea where to go, no one else in sight and icy. The guy in the video knew he was in trouble though and also says that he has no idea how to make it back to the station. Hard not to panic. At least the wind didn't pick up and it was sunny.
