I remember that during the U.S. coverage of this performance, as G&G were taking the ice, Dick Button said: “Keep an eye on him. He does a superlative job of presenting her. Never overshadowing her, yet maintaining the quality of the performance.” This comment encapsulates the essence of the male’s role in partnering, whether it be skating or the dance. Ekaterina was like a beautiful diamond and Sergei was like a Tiffany ring setting supporting and presenting a beautiful diamond so that it sparkles to its fullest extent. This is the essence of great partnering. Button’s comment was very insightful and was the highest compliment that could be paid to any male partner.

I bet they were the NICEST Russian skaters since the others I've seen in the past, always seem to have a superiority complex, act like they can't think another couple is good, can't smile, and act like total snobs. I always loved watching them skate and sometimes wished that the US skaters had that certain something extra to them that this couple did. There may or may not be better couples during their tenure on the skating circuit, or after, but Gordeeva and Grinkov were mesmerizing and they had something extra special about them. Can't really explain it, but even now that skating has evolved since and skating may have gotten better (or not, depending on how much of a purist one is), I don't think anyone has the charisma, the magic, that something extra special that this couple had. Of course, I'm speaking about pair skating, and not pair ice dancing. That's a whole different, beautiful sport all of its own.
@ravenel24 жыл бұрын
You can’t criticize Russian skaters before the end of the Cold War, they had a life you cannot possibly imagine and they were very humble. Sergei especially was on a higher level, but so many Russian skaters look like they would have been great friends-Artur and Natalia, Bechke and Petrov, Rodnina etc. The man of the pair that finished fourth in Lillehammer, Naumov, was indeed a jerk to Sergei Grinkov, telling him he didn’t improve and that he should have stayed professional so Naumov would have the bronze medal. That’s crazy. But there are jerks in all countries...

This is great in a kind of cheesy late '80s way. Russian fans, don't freak out--I actually prefer their '94 routine. This program is sort of--okay, this is how you it it, yeah yeah yeah. Sure, it's well done. But it's by the book. The '94 LP was much more--THIS is how you do it. Even if it wasn't technically perfect. What I'm saying is--the '94 LP was *artistically* perfect. This just doesn't get me that excited. The '94 LP--THAT blew me away.

I’m sorry but disagree, but if you see the 2 programs , they both skated beautiful & almost perfect ( she was only 15 yrs & he was 19 ) barley 20 .. if u put any 2 skaters to skate together with their beautiful perfect lines their unison & also elegance after pairing them together only 3 yrs prior from winning the Gold ( I’m sorry but I’ve seen many unitary skater alone , pair skaters , & pair ice skaters) & they have said when interviewed as Scott & Tessa ( that skated together for since they were barely 5 & 7 ) for them to go to the olympics when they were 17-19 & they came in 3rd ( been already skating for 12 yrs ) & to put G& G together together ONLY 3 yrs prior ( they had won already Gold medals in Teens World Competitions & then they moved up into Adults World Competition ( I believe they only Gold medals only 1 yrs they received a Silver on all their all the competitions before 88 Olympics ( won Gold) & from there they were UNBEATABLE ... so to me to have place to skate together only three years at a tender age of 11going on 12 ( ( for Katia) & Sergie 4 yrs above her... to me these two ( G&G) skated beautifully together in Calgary ( 88 Olympics) & they have been the best even , though they were put to together & they accomplished so so much for them to be put as pairs only 3 yrs together & to me as many that know the sport have & still say ( THAT G & G ) WERE THE BEST PAIRS SKATERS OF ALL TIMES & who knows how much more ( if the tragic death of Sergei at the age of only 28) that these 2 would have Accomplished ! It was very Sad 😢 what Katia had to endure, lost her partner in life, her companion, the love ❤️ of her life, her husband , father to their 3 yr old baby girl name Daria ( she is a replica of Sergei) , the only man she has really LOVED & GAVE her ❤️ to ( since she was only 14 ) though she married again about 6-7 yrs later (also gold medalist name Ilik ) & has another another daughter ) in the year 2015 she divorced.. Cause deep inside Sergei was & will always be HER ONE & ONLY TRUE & forever LOVE ❤️! , ( Katia had to endure on how to a life w/out HER SERGEI at a young age of 24 . R.I.P. Torvill and Dean are ice dancers. This is pairs skating. They are two completely different events and disciplines.
