I'd not noticed before the distinction since many pairs don't seem to do this move so much, then and now, but Ekaterina and Sergei did at least one in nearly every performance...the free front foot in the forward position makes for a very awkward looking entry into the death spiral for sure. Ekaterina and Sergei did it with mesmerizing grace.

G&G were incredible. The way Katia turns her back so easily. The forward inside is SO difficult. Their technique and edge work so pure. Thank you so much. G&G had global fans, I am from the UK and loved them. Truly the “Russian style” at its very very best. It used to be said there were several ‘styles’ of skating: North American, British, Western European and then “Russian” (before the days of the powerful South East Asian skaters I do not wish to diminish any one for a moment) When many of the Eastern European and former Soviet coaches started taking students from around the world and moved countries the different styles became less noticeable (eg. G&G’s coach/choreographer was Marina Zoueva who famously trained Virtue/Moir of Canada, Davis/White USA and now Muramoto/Takahashi of Japan)

I agree Pamela, their technique was so effortless and more difficult than it looked. The way pairs skate today isn't in my opinion as fluid and beautiful. When I watch G & G then watch pairs now I don't see the beautiful ballet influence and how every movement was as one. I would have loved to see them skate today, I miss them.

Well today they are too busy with doing the most complicated side by side triples & throw jumps. They are forgetting about the fundamental pairs elements & their quality as well.

Yes. You can see how much better G &G did this element. Clearly superior. Katia had much better line/position going into the death spiral.

I think another thing that makes Katia’s position more attractive than the others is her technique of putting her free leg (left leg) behind as opposed to in front like all the other examples. It’s a lot less awkward and I have no idea why it’s not become standard.

I would say: they were skating in one heart one spirit even before they got married. i remember i heard this in another championship video,the lady-journalist said "G&G is the only pair skating glide smoothly and never make any noise !!

The best Forward Inside Death Spiral ever was performed by its creators Ludmila Belousova & Oleg Protopopov (see and compare their positions), who called it Life Spiral. They also created Backward Inside Death Spiral (The Protopopovs' Spiral) and Forward Outside Death Spiral (Love Spiral).

They had an overall ease in executing every element, they had so much speed and made everything look effortless. Also they are still the best technicians. And untouchable artistry... But this particular video is comparing their forward inside death spiral. Katia puts her free leg behind the one on the ice, while every other female partner puts her free leg above the gliding one. In Moscow this style was taught, you can see Irina Rodnina for example doing the same.

The difference is the way the women all bend at the waist (like a jack knife if you know what that is) while Katia's body is straight the whole entire time. That requires Sergie to be precise and have just the right tension and for Katia to have strong core strength and a great edge. Katia's looks much more graceful and she has beautiful body line the entire time. and look at both of their free arms: they mirror each other as she descends and look at how his free arm is in line with his other arm which is in line with her body.

Нет им равных.. Посмотрели недавно выступление итальянской пары - грандиозная акробатика, просто невероятно, даже не верится, что такое возможно на льду 😳. Но ☝️Это уже не фигурное катание..
