She was 19 and he was 23. This was shortly before they married. They were already very much a couple but Sergei was such a professional! He always kept his composure in spite of his love for her! I love this about him.

sergei had the face of wanting to kill the interviewer, I don't blame him, me too. Katia was gorgeous and I don't understand why all people say that she was way above her ideal weight, as women we know that our bodies change.

Katie has always been a tiny little thing. It was a most ludicrous and unprofessional question about her “getting bigger”. Nearly 50 now, she is still in a fabulous shape. RIP Sergei 💕

Oh, that angry little pause before Sergei answered the interviewer's question about Katia getting "bigger". Great answer, though. I wish I could have seen the things that Sergei would have done if he had lived a long life. I also wonder if this led to that incident where Katia barely ate and ended up with a broken foot.
@ShawneeSue

@@Stivag99 Yes, that's it. I remember that she said that she was barely eating, trying to be as light as possible, and implied that it might have led to the fracture (I assume because of nutrient deficiencies).

@@Chloe-pk7xv it was before the 88 Olympics that she got so thin supposedly resulting in a stress fracture. They missed part of the 89 season as a result. Commentators speak about her injury during their Worlds performance that year. During this 90 season he did have a shoulder issue that they found later was a torn ligament I believe. She speaks of him having surgery on it in her book right before they are married in 91. In 95 he was having back and nerve problems causing numbness in his foot that was troubling him before he died.

Kerrie Johnson He was the BEST. He was exactly what a boyfriend/husband/partner should be. Katia was sooooo fortunate . She even addressed that many years later in an interview, years after Sergei had passed, saying how at the time she didn’t think about it very much - how completely trustworthy he always was. How she never ever had to worry about his love or loyalty or his complete faithfulness. She knew, but not until years after his passing, knew just how extremely rare it is/was to find that in a partner. That interview was AFTER her marriage to Ilia didn’t work out, amid rumors of cheating and affairs. Nothing like that to make one realize just how good Sergei was as a husband/boyfriend/partner. And what a ridiculously stupid question - a bold, brazen, unthinking, RUDE comment about Katia’s size. Geez. C’mon. And G & G had to actually sit through that and respond to that ridiculous question..🙄. Funny if Sergei would’ve punched that interviewer..!!👊😂😂🤣

Kimberly Bellefontaine How about it? You made me LOL with the punch comment- now that would have been a sight to see! I am sure he was a wonderful husband- as we all always say, you can see the love in their eyes for each other. Interviewers always seem to say the dumbest things- I swear the first time I watched that I was waiting for a rude comment back from Sergei. But he was the bigger man and gave a professional answer. I bet Sergei and Katia rolled their eyes after it was over though. Just love them both!!!

That's when she was going through her growth from a girl to a woman. At least she managed to still compete. Look at the young Russian girls who burst on the scene as a phenom just to disappear after they hit puberty and a growth spurt.

@@kimberlybellefontaine1215 I understand but it’s not really the same to compare them. Katia is a pairs skater and they performed jumps which are now easy. Double axels and double toe loops. Girls now are doing tripple axels and quads, and they do 7-8 jumps a program. If Katia had to do all that she would struggle too.

@@kimberlybellefontaine1215 I was replying to the person who said that Russian phenoms disappear after they hit puberty but their downfall is completely different since most of the time they are using wrong technique but apart from that they are doing much harder jumps than Katia did because it’s a different era so comparing katias growth spurt and how it effected her jumps is not really the same as the girls today doing quads and 3A

They were both wonderful skaters, but I always thought that he was a better, stronger skater than her. She on the other hand had artistry down to a pat. He was artistic as well, but artistically she seemed to lead. She had put on a little weight here but still looked beautiful as ever even with the little extra weight. It made her look more womanly.

You can just SEE her replaying that fall over and over and over in her mind while she’s sitting there in the kiss n cry. And wow.....they still got the gold! For getting the gold, they didn’t seem all that happy. And wow, you can REALLY see the changes going on in Katia’s body here. I can’t imagine how difficult a time that must have been for her. She was halfway to becoming a woman right here. Such major changes going on. Still that cute little face though!!!💞

Kimberly Bellefontaine there is a moment where she looks so sweet and scared. Sergei is looking at her with concern but strength so that she doesn’t fall apart. She’s young and a sweet girl. From reading Katia's book, I think this was right when they had decided they had had enough of the pressures of amateur competition and decided to turn pro. I think it was a great decision to leave while they were at the top and then of course come back for the 94 Olympics. They were always beautiful but really took it to a new level and looked so much happier when they went pro!

It's likely just the semantics of the locale where the interviewer lives; I've heard that in certain US areas, to denote "getting older," "developing," "growing taller," "maturing," etc. However, I so see how that can fall on the ears, and perhaps isn't the best way to accurately describe that progression.
