Ask my husband. If I’m in tears over a song, it is alway by Gordon Lightfoot… I can’t explain it, except to say it is all his ability to paint that picture he is representing. The exceptional delivery of every element to put that across is what sets him apart. IMHO. ❤️

"When the green dark forest was too silent to be real"....One of the best lines ever written...ever recorded... If that doesn't make the hair on your neck stand up, you're already dead... If you notice, he says it twice!... To remind you... Think about it... Think about what North America was like when that was true....Imagine a time before cites... roads... governments... money... conflict...hatred and prejudice... anger... When all that mattered was your work and your character... I wish I were there...

MY FAVORITE SONG BY GORDON LIGHTFOOT,~ I WAS AT HIS CONCERT AT THE GREEK THEATER IN 1989 AT GRIFFITH PARK IN LOS ANGELES I WAS SEATED IN THE LAST ROW WHEN GORD REQUESTED A SONG FROM THE AUDIENCE, I YELLED OUT "CANADIAN RAILROAD TRILOGY". I WAS ABOUT 200 FT. FROM THE STAGE WHEN HE GRANTED MY REQUEST~ I WILL NEVER FORGET IT...

I saw Gord in Duluth back in the mid-70s. He took some requests from the audience and a teacher from Thunder Bay, who had driven down the North Shore of Superior to see the concert, requested this song for some of her students who had come with her. Gord took the time to tune his 12-string down to do this song for her. I'll never forget that. Even though I'm originally from northern Minnesota, I felt Canadian at that moment.

One of the most amazing performances I've seen. Red Shea is so subtle yet phenomenal as he plays the fluid fills in the backdrop, yet if you listen to them they are simply jaw-dropping in their complexity. Rick Haynes' bass line drive the whole rhythm in perfect time...he doesn't miss a note. And Gordon's vocals on top of it all backed up by his strums put the icing on the cake. This is a timeless classic that shows just how professional...and how good...these guys were together.

I was a navie swinging my hammer in the blazing sun of the frazer canyon. we worked like automatons swinging the hammer as high as we could with one hand. On our tiptoes. then arcing it down, catching it with the other hand and bending our backs to bring the the face of the maul parallel to the head of the spike. Then the hammer would bounce and swing past our feet in a wide circle over our heads again and again. This song tears at my heart. I felt so connected with the nation along that ribbon of steel. in 1973 we would find date nails on the ties from 83 almost 100 years. this song makes the hair on my arms stand out like porcupine quills

The first time I saw Gordon was around this time in a small hall at UTEP. Just the three guitars. He was just getting known after If You Could Read My Mind. I had found an older album called Sunday Concert made in the late 60' s with the acoustic version of this song. This concert comes close to that. Later for his greatest hits albums the original simply arranged songs got strings, horns, etc. added, to make them more palatable to the Pop audiences. Thank you Gordon for so many songs that make up the soundtrack of my life.

A true Masterpiece and by far in my opinion the best song Gord ever wrote...it's pure perfection in lyrics and composition....it is a song that is so enjoyable to listen to but also enjoyable to analyze....the placement of the different sections of the music, the way the music mimics a train, the poignancy of the verses about the long forgotten Navvies......and so much more.....it took him 3 days to write it.....add it all up and probably the best song ever written......

I grew up in southern California and have lived most of my life in Hawaii. I love his music and so do a lot of other people I know. I saw him in concert twice. They were great performances.

Hi Dennis. I disagree. Our Gordon has a loyal large following all over the US. At 80 years of age he sells out his concerts even today. He is a national treasure to us but he is well loved by our neighbours.

Was outside working in the yard listening to Lightfoot radio on Pandora. Young neighbor fella came over and knew all about Lightfoot and my younger friends recognize him, too, when his songs come up. To that end, I’ve recognized that he’s part of the national sub-conscience even among younger people who can appreciate good music.

My favourite uncle worked as an Engineer for CP Rail back in the '70s. He had the dream job of many a young lad including myself to drive one of those huge powerful locomotives. While pulling a long coal train, tragically he and his crew were lost to a rockslide in a dangerous section of the South Thompson River about 1973 or 74, which caused the locomotives to derail and fall to the highway below. Missed my Uncle Frank so much. Along with trains, he helped spark my interest in those fun fast cars of the time. And now we are missing Gord, but just like all of his great poetry, we have this wonderful song to help us relive those fine memories.

And today, Nov 17, 2018, is Gord's eightieth birthday, and he's performing a concert at this moment. The first time I ever heard Lightfoot was on July 1, 1967 (Canada Day, at that time Dominion Day) when he sang this song during the official Centennial concert. I was newly arrived from England, having grown up with the likes of the Beatles, Stones, etc. Gordon Lightfoot was -- WOW!

Away back in 1968, I had the chance to meet Gordon Lightfoot, Red Shea, and John Stockfish. Before that, in about 1965, after hearing some of his music, like Early Morning Rain, it inspired me to start playing 12-string guitar. I still play a 12-string (I have two beautiful ones) and I learned and still play The Canadian Railroad Trilogy. A masterpiece doesn't even begin to describe it - it's the greatest Canadian song ever written. I have lived in New Zealand for the past 43 years, have played that song many, many times, and have had people here enthralled with it. My grandfather worked for the CPR for his entire working life when he wasn't occupied being a soldier in WW1 and WW2. The story of the CPR is incredible - if you don't believe me, read Pierre Berton's books "The National Dream" and "The Last Spike". EVERYTHING in Gord's song is true - and much more!!

I spoke with Lightfoot on live radio last week - what a hoot, since he's my long time all time favorite singer! Last time I actually spoke was after a concert in Chicago in 1975! I asked if he'd ever had guitar lessons and he said when he was young he took some piano, but was self taught on the guitar. I thanked him for providing me wth a lot of great songs over the years - I was a small time performer through the 70's and 80's. Fun stuff!
