As an avid bow hunter myself I can honestly say I admire his attempt at the most difficult thing on earth... 70 yards is a looong shot. That's tough for even the best archers. Again, good on you for trying.

When you harvest and butcher your own wild game, you have the purest, lean protein with no hormones, totally organic and healthy! I lost from 455 lbs to 216 lbs since 2014 by primarily eating wild game and fish protein and fresh fruits and vegetables, limiting my carbs and I have lost an entire large adult male and am healthier at 58 than I was at 38!!

Possibly you could take that shot on a rutting deer on a dead calm day on flat land when you can paper plate all day at 80 yards. 100% of hunters should never take that shot in mountains. This video shows two guides putting him in unethical situations. It's terrible for the publics view of hunting.

A beginner archer taking a 70 yard shot on a beautiful live animal is completely unethical. Kudos to the real bow-hunters in this thread calling this nonsense out. Gordon may not understand that, but his guide sure should.

70 on an axis deer is nonsense. I shoot 5 days a week year round and 50 is pushing it on an Elk. Nevermind the flight time. Just having to grip your bow different to make that low draw would put you outside the vitals at 70. The good news is the patience and frustration of bow hunting will humble Gordon's ego real quick.

@@jefferylorsung8846 all that stuff is scripted and those hunting guides are dishonest. Look at his technique holding the rifle and who says to anyone, let alone a beginner, a 70 yard archery shot at an axis deer is good position ??

50 yards is punching it for you on an elk? Either your bow is very slow, or you need more practice.

@D_Boone I can shoot a baseball all day at 80. I shoot year round, 70 lb bowtech carbon 1 at 295 fps. If you think a sharp angle at 50 in steep terrain and brush is a chip shot you need an ego check.

@jeff agree bro. Some people really do think it’s that easy huh? 😅 I started bow hunting last year. Missed my first deer in October just over the shoulders on an angles shot. Had to learn about 3rd level axis. Buy the tools to do it, and still shoot about 1000 more arrows before I got another chance at another a month later. Double lunged the second time on same shot after I fine tuned my bow. People don’t understand the practice it takes. I bought an EZ green press, learned to do d loops, nock ties, cam sync with. Draw board, switch from a finger trigger to a thumb, fine tune arrows…..(tried about 5 different kinds before I found the ones that worked best for me). .. the list goes on. Bow hunting def ain’t easy and anyone that says 70yards shots is just skill issue and it’s not hard to get good at shooting bows is lying to themselves. No real hunters are taking those shot! Complete BS.

@disposable_hero2748 I practice regularly at 100. It really amplifys mistakes in your grip, stance, trigger squeeze, anchoring ect. I can hit vitals at 100 easy on a target on my range. The issue is western hunting you will never be on flat ground where you can get the perfect stance or perfect draw. You are shooting through windows in the brush sometimes at steep angles. I passed a shot on a stud bull last year at 76 yds broadside. It was steep down hill and his cows were watering so he never stopped moving for more than 5 seconds. The chances that bull takes a step during your release is pretty good. Couple that with flight time and what looked to be a perfect shot could also be right in the guts or forward in the shoulder. I don't know a single archery elk hunter in Oregon who would have taken that shot.

How much practice shooting the bow did Ramsey have before attempting to hunt? He said it was the first time hunting with a bow, but I assume there was some practice before. Its good for people to hear this if they have not have shot one before, so animals are not wounded due to unnecessary lack of experience.
@cadelelon

Good call out. Based on what I saw with his handling and use of the rifle, I think this is his first go-around on both fronts. If he didn't put in the practice prior, I would hope a guide wouldn't agree to let him shoot. Especially with the bow.

You dont take 60-70 yard shots unless you're a pro. Most animals are taken between 10-40 yards. Takes a long time to become good with a bow. You don't just pick one up and become rambo.

@@AlphaQHard You clearly don't know anything about it lol. Most bow hunters aren't taking 60-70 yard shots. Even with a compound bow, that distance is not what most guys are capable of shooting reliably enough to be hunting at within their first year of archery. Like orrenwhite4664 said, most guys are going to be shooting 10-40 yards. The guide also said they're going after Axis deer. If you bow hunt, you know Axis deer are one of the most difficult to hunt because they're extremely alert and have very quick reflexes.

@@truoutdoors When did I say anything about 60-70 yards? I was referring to him saying it takes a lot of time to get used to a bow, it doesnt unless youre inherently bad at it. (Unless youre shooting traditional)

I limit my archery shots on game to 40 yds. I know that I can do that shot perfectly 98% of the time! Any further than that adds a much larger likelihood of something not going quite right and wounding an animal. Im a very ethical hunter and I respect my quarry too much to take a lower % shot!!
@DannyJacobs-x5z

I've been archery hunting for elk and whitetail for 40 years, and I have never taken a shot past 35 yards on an animal. I wouldn't even consider drawing back on anything 60-70 yards! Too much wrong can happen in the time it takes for that arrow to reach it's mark.

70 yards for a first time bow hunter? Either the guide knew he'd never come close or they filmed that shot for B reel after they bumped the deer. Folks ho hunt at thise ranges spend a looong time just getting all of their equipment tuned perfectly to their draw, and that's after a hell of a lot of training. Even then most won't take a shot that long. If it's your first time shooting a compound bow you won't even have the strength to draw a bow with the poundage to reach that distance.

I love to see Gordon putting himself out there. But even experienced bow hunters will think twice about a long shot like that. Bow hunters will always have to resort to a more difficult and less lethal mode of hunting, and novice hunters pushing the limit reinforces the stereotype that hunters only care about taking the shot and not the risk of injuring an animal.
