In Myanmar culture, not wearing any foot wear, i.e. bare feet shows respect to the sanctuary one is entering. Similarly, when one enters the house as a guest, he should take off his foot wear to show respect to the host.

Gordon, homogeneous Myanmar has only one religion, Buddhism, up until it became a victim of Colonialism when the small nation was made part of Greater India and several millions immigrants from South Asia poured in, including Bangladesh with population 170 million, which has been sending millions of illegal immigrants into Myanmar for ages that Myanmar had declared national emergency in Rakhine State since in the early Eighties, but the West & Western news medias ignored it all, since they had boycotted eversince Myanmar turned to Socialism after painful Colonialism. Myanmar probably endured the worst immigration onslaught under long Colonialism, as several million immigrants from South Asia poured over, when small homogeneous nation was placed inside Greater India; while neighbors such as Laos, Cambodia & Vietnam under French Colonialism had no immigration issue at all.
