I agree too ... it should have been a monster, no accounting for tastes I guess. This was the song that really turned me into a Lightfoot fan, up till then I liked him but the whole album this tune came from knocked my socks off.

Written to break your heart and it does. Reminiscent of "Diary" by David Gates and Bread. She's talking in her sleep, but not about him. Ive been a fan for about 52 years now since "If you could read my mind". His concert sound is perfect as the day you listened to the LP. He is one in a million. He delivers on stage. No fluff. No wasted time. Just lots of vintage songs, sung beautifully.

Diary released 1972; you cant be trying to compare that teeny bopper diary 🎉tune with Gordon Lightfoot’s … TIYS released in 1971 about a grown man having his world shattered!? I lived that song in 1971. I was 19.5 yrs and dumped by the only man I ever planned to marry. He came back. He was 25 yrs old…and I was there…waited 4 more years because I was done with men and all the pain they can bring. Then I insisted on marriage or goodbye. Gordon Lightfoot kept me alive.❤️🙏🏻

Gordon Lightfoot was a big fan of Detroit back in the day. We used to go see him all the time. In his very early days, he used to play at the university in Windsor, Ontario. We went there too. I’ve lost track of the number of times Insaw Gordon. I still have his records and CDs. Joni Mitchell also lived in Detroit at that time. We would go see her at the Cessmate coffeehouse on Livernois. She played there with her then husband Chuck Mitchell.

God, put me in touch with Gordon’s Lightfoot’s music. I came to Toronto when I was 17 by myself. I brought Gordon’s first album, and instead of going out, drinking, and taking drugs, I would come home a listen to Gordon’s songs. Gordon was my guardian angel, watching over me, with his beautiful music. I owe you Gordon.

Downhill 2400 my best friend and I saw him in 1974 when he was in his vocal prime. We both fell madly in love with him as a result. His looks have changed as has his voice as he’s grown older , but I still firmly believe that there is no singer/songwriter who even comes close to the sheer poetry of his lyrics, the melodies that fit so perfectly with those lyrics and the deep emotion with which he sings each song. Pure heaven as far as I’m concerned.

Johnny Beretta, me as well Johnny,…On why it didn’t become a big hit. I think so much was happening in the music scene at that point that there just wasn’t room for everybody. Later on Gordon would come into his genius songwriting. What a great man he was and it is sad to see him go. I heard he told his manager just when he was going. We had a good run or something like that was said,I understand.I met him in ‘73 at Tanglewood. He gave me half a Fosters,I believe, saying:”I don’t think I need this. I watched him get out of the car with about five women all carrying flowers and he came across the field about 100 yards and sat down on the bench next to me. I was speechless. I was such a fan of his and have always played his music.God rest his soul. He was and is a great man; just as Bob Dylan is a great man and woody Guthrie and Stan Rogers.
