Chimpanzees are extremely unpredictable and in truth there are many occasions where a "pet" chimpanzee has mauled someone or even killed their owners because they just snapped one day seemingly for no reason.

It's so sad cause as soon as it's over, Gordy appears genuinely confused. Like he couldn't remember what happened or how everyone ended up dead. He looked at Jupe and seemed like he was asking "what happened?" It's why Chimps should never be made as pets. You may think they are tame and may never hurt you, but they can. They won't mean to, but it still happens.

This scene is both terrifying and sad at the same time. Clearly Gordy had a friendship with the family, only to be spooked from the first balloon popping and probably thought it was something else, like a gunshot perhaps. Which caused him to freak out. When the last balloon popped, it caused him to snap out of it and not remember what he did. Only for him to get shot dead while trying to communicate to the boy who he saw as his friend. It goes to show you why it's stupid to have dangerous animals around without the proper care. I'm a believer that we us humans have the abilities to help animals who are in need, but I am not a believer in capturing animals who are not in need and force them to be entertainers

I'm a firm believer that Gordy would have also mauled the boy to death too had his eyes not been obscured. He would grow up to think he had some special relationship with the animal but in reality I think he was just lucky that Gordy didn't see that he was making direct eye contact.

Because the crew and cast had a relationship with Gordy and that didn't stop him from killing them.

In Germany there was a music show in the 80’s that was “hosted” by a Chimpanzee. Nothing ever happened, at least nothing the public got to know. But one of the producers once said that they can only use adolescent Chimpanzees for the show, because adult animals are too dangerous to handle. This lead to the rumour that the chimpanzees used for the show were put down after they reached a certain age.

There's several comments saying he signed "im sorry" and "what happened" after the incident but no asl thread or discussion supports this theory. The consensus seems to be that it's a learned/rehearsed gesture that he'd get a treat for, or he's trying to communicate *something* to the kid. The movie's whole message is to not humanize animals, so it doesn't make sense for Peele to write the chimp as apologetic for what it did.

The perfect depiction of true fear. Your strength won't save you. Your bravery will be worthless. You are simply a helpless fool for being in this place. Then, to watch the thing that brought you that fear try to bring back the peace die right in front of you. The saddest most merciful thing to happen to Gordy was death. This scene goes from terrifying to tragic so quickly. After you see this horrific carnage, you slowly realize that Gordy's an animal. An innocent animal that doesn't know right from wrong. He's scared, confused and doesn't realize what he had just done. His friend is cowering and hiding from him and as he reaches out to him for comfort, he's killed.

I guess there's a parallel here. In both the past and present, Jupe shows a willingness (curiosity?) to reach out and contact something terrifying and unknown. In both cases, death soon followed.

Yes! With Gordy, it's almost undoubtedly the fact that he never made eye contact/had his eyes veiled by the table cloth that made him feel special, thus leading to the second incident. Jupe felt he had some mastery over the unknown/untamed that he could 'train' Jean Jacket to come when summoned, which turned out to be very untrue. Not to mention, he dies direclty because he (like everyone else in the crowd) looked Jean Jacket in the eye/directly...

The way Gordy dies also ties into one of the central themes of peele’s movies in that humanity isn’t the hottest meal on the plate. Both Gordy and jj are examples of how dangerous nature is and how people thinking they have a better understanding than they really do means they can control and exploit it. In spite of how terrifying these creatures are they still went down like any other wild animal would when getting their brains blown out.An ongoing theme of these movies is of people who try to control what they not only don’t understand but also believe they have superiority over only to get the worst humbling of their life. The final nail in the coffin is they can’t even say they lost to something larger than life and say it took something nearly unstoppable to beat them as they lost to something just as vulnerable as them.

It is intentionally set up in this film, it indicate a "bad miracle" meaning something that seems almost very unlikely to happen and yet it happened at the worst time possible. But the thing about this one is that this shoe is a lifesaver for the kid since if he had looked into gordy's eyes during that time he would most likely be attacked, but because he's too fixated on the shoe he never did look at him straight in the eye. And when gordy's get in close to him there's still a cover blocking the eye contact

The way i interpreted this film is that exploitation often leads to backlash that in some cases can be deadly, and the unfortunate truth is many times the only escape from the exploitation and the inevitable backlash is to use the exploitation in your own favor even if it’s too late.

So I don’t know if the shot at 4:14 is meaningful in anyway but I interpreted it as further but also subtly hinting that Gordy is supposed to be an analogy for Jean jacket as the lampshade somewhat resembles Jean Jacket’s final form.

A) It's up to your interpretation B) It could be the idea of trauma being linked to one specific spectacle C) Gordy could've stacked the shoe in an effort to find something to do after his rage subsided, as many intelligent animals do stupid crap like that with their child-equivalent IQ. Think of all the things kids do, you know?

I heard it might’ve been a divine intervention, to prevent Jupe from looking Gordy in the eyes and get him to look at the shoe. I believe since it was a divine intervention, Jupe should’ve learnt from this day not to exploit animals but failed to do so. Making this divine intervention wasted
