When he talks about his mother, you can really feel the complex feelings he had towards her. She never accepted having a gay son, and was often cruel to him about it, and even disparaged her son and his homosexuality to strangers. He cut her out of his life when he was in his 30s, and she sent him a very vicious letter which he burned right after he read. He called his mother a horrible person, but he also still loved her and longed for the approval she never gave him.

Friendliest, happiest I've ever seen GV was in conversation with novelist Eudora Welty.

what a beautiful boyhood house..notice the old people not clapping when he was talking at the family reunion and most of the young people were...he wouldn't be considered a man's man...personally the young people give me great hope for this country and good riddance to the old narrow minded, judgemental so called "greatest generation" by Tom Brokaw but which in reality couldn't be more further from the truth

I think it is perfectly natural for intelligent people to believe in God and the story of Jesus. What Mr. Vidal perhaps cannot comprehend that in the absence of a better religion they were stuck with one that makes no sense.
