To make sure your feet are comfortable, dry and protected, your GORE-TEX footwear needs to be kept in good shape. Look after your footwear, and it will offer you better performance and a longer useful life.
In this video we'll show you useful tips on cleaning your GORE-TEX footwear properly. Washing your GORE-TEX shoes & boots is a simple process you can easily do at home including 3 steps:

I have a pair of old goretex military boot,i dry cleaned it earlier and the water is going through the membrane after step-in water for couple seconds, But i don't see any holes or damages. Can i "Reactivate"them? If so, how. I really need it to work again, it still looks good.

If water saturates the outer fabric of the boot but does not enter inside (i.e. your socks remain dry), you could reapply a DWR treatment as detailed here: bit.ly/40dUbBQ If water penetrates the inside, the boot might either be damaged or have reached the end of its useful life. If you're still active in the military we recommend bringing this to your superior's attention so that they can take the necessary steps to assist you with this.

Recently (Aug 2023) I've bought a pair of boots Salomon Quest GtX 4D in Costa Rica, we have tropical weather 🌧️ 🌞 🌡️. I use liquid hands soap for cleaning but I don't have Gore-Tex liquid for reapply protection. Can I use water repellent for leather/ sintetic shoes in spray ? Thanks and pura vida ✌🏽😎!

It's great that you are taking such good care of your GORE-TEX shoes and that you clean them regularly. With regard to your question, please check either with the manufacturer of the spray that you would like to use if it is suitable for shoes with membrane technology or ask Salomon as the manufacturer of the shoes which product they recommend to re-apply a durable water repellent (DWR).

In simple terms, while DWR treatments on garments use heat as a driving force in order to activate the DWR, treatments on footwear use evaporation as a driving force. Therefore, heat needs to be applied to garments in order to (re-)activate their DWR properties but not to footwear. We recommend using lukewarm water as it is more effective in removing dirt. Keeping the pores of the GORE-TEX membrane inside the shoe clean is actually very important in order to enhance its breathability.

I have some goretex boots. Over the weekend they got completely soaked. I have since cleaned them with warm water, but some has got through to the inside of the shoe. Will they be water proof again once dry?

No store-bought care product can harm the GORE-TEX membrane. However, fat or oily products such as greasy creams, leather oils or silicone-based products hinder the breathability of the whole shoe. It is true that salt water, as well as excessive exposure to dirt, can affect the laminate and reduce or shorten the useful life of the product. Specifically regarding the use of GORE-TEX products in salt water environments, we have developed the GORE-TEX PRO FABRIC WITH AN OCEAN TECHNOLOGY® MEMBRANE. The Ocean Technology® membrane is used in conjunction with GORE-TEX PRO technology exclusively in Musto sailing products; this membrane is specially designed to withstand the adverse effects of salt water. This is due to the fact that salt can cause abrasions on GORE-TEX outer fabric and membrane and therefore an extra-resistant laminate suitable for the marine environment is needed since exposure to salt water is not a recommended end use for standard GORE-TEX products. GORE-TEX PRO products with Ocean Technology® are specifically designed for use in salt water and it is recommended to rinse the product with fresh water after each use to remove any trace of salt from the face fabric as salt tends to attract moisture; however, the GORE-TEX membrane will still breathe even though the face fabric is completely saturated (even underwater). For more information regarding the technology used in the specific product of your interest and how to best care for the product and to select which product is best adapted for use in either salt or swamp water, we can recommend contacting the individual manufacturer for additional product specific information and care instructions to prevent the exposure to salt or swamp water to negatively affect your GORE-TEX product.
