The Gorge Dam was constructed in 1913 by Northern Ohio Traction & Light Co. - which later became Ohio Edison - to generate hydroelectric power. Yet it has sat, decommissioned, since 1958.
Over the years, an estimated 832,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment have accumulated behind the dam.
The Gorge dam is scheduled for deconstruction by 2026, with plans to pipe sediment into a permanent holding area two miles downstream.
The Cuyahoga River descends 200 feet within a two-mile stretch here. The dam's removal will once again expose the falls that lie beneath the concrete. Giving kayakers a thrilling ride through Class V rapids and sightseers a view not seen since their great-grandparent's time.
