Gorgeous Cemetery Hidden Behind A Dumpster -- Sayles-Cook Lot - Burrillville, RI (Cemetery Scout)

Went out to visit a few people buried in a really beautiful little cemetery totally hidden away out of sight. Gotta walk through a convenience store parking lot, behind a dumpster, and up a quarter mile or so into the woods to even get close to it. Several members of the Sayles textile manufacturing family are buried in this cemetery, along with a few other interesting people that I'll tell you all about in the video.

The cemetery is maintained by volunteers of the Burrillville Historic and Preservation Society. Most of the cemeteries in town are.

My girlfriend and I go around Toronto and try to find old spots just like this. The other day we were walking on the street and she says to me look over there built-in to that new high rise and so I looked over and an old house from 1850 was interwoven with a newer building and one walking by would barely notice the old house next to the new condo.

Such a gorgeous cemetery. I wander into cemeteries often. I particularly love these old resting places. Whenever I travel and come across a cemetery, I always stop to walk through. I appreciate your work on this and explaining the history of the graves. Great work, as always. I think I have now officially watched 7 of your videos in just a few days. 😊 I have enjoyed every one of them...learned things I didn't know.

That's cool, I always enjoy finding old graveyards near me. I'm from south NJ and there's a good amount of 1700-1800s near old churches or schools and all throughout the Pine Barrens

winters in MA, CT & RI aren't too bad, probably not unlike eastern TX? VT, NH & ME can be a bit colder, but it's usually not like WI or MN. power grid seems to do ok, though, unless a tree falls on the lines 😬

Tip-Dress like Ricky Ranger and if people look they won't notice you. When I would go Geocaching in the city I would wear my uniform ( I work for the City) just so people wouldn't call the Police about "some weird guy" acting suspicious.

That big rock behind the dumpster before you head towards the cemetery, this looks like the spot other KZbinrs have called the actual place of the Salem witch hangings and burning? There's probably a lot of pharmacies with big rocks behind dumpsters but would love a follow up on that subject and whether this place was it? this cemetery is in rhode island. the witch hangings took place in what was once called salem village and is now a part of a danvers, massachusetts. the trials themselves took place in salem town which is now just salem and this is where all the witchy tourist things are. there were no witch burnings in salem either. all hangings except for giles corey who was pressed to death.

He mentioned that this part of Rhode Island were Quaker. I dunno for sure, but i don't think Quakers would be involved in witch trials. Seems more like a Massachusetts Puritanical fad.

@@spacehonky6315 there were Quakers in Salem during the witch trials as well (including my ancestors!). you are right, they were not participating in the witch trials as they also faced significant persecution in the decades previous. I'm looking into my own family, I've seen some stories online of the Quakers retrieving the bodies of those executed in order to provide them with a proper burial and an ancestor of mine who was a carpenter is even said to have built their coffins, but I'm not sure if any of it is actually true or just old family legend.

Your videos are FANTASTIC! But I have to ask... why did you do all that secret agent stuff behind the CVS instead of just using the access road up the hill? I drove my pickup truck right to the cemetery when we took some dead oak trees down there a few years ago. Much easier than bushwhacking. :-)

is there any literature on how they made such tall rock walls have perfect fitting rocks?

When the cemetery was built it was in the middle of a large mill complex. It is likely that the same stonemasons who built the mill buildings also laid the stones in the retaining wall. There are quite a few books out there on masonry techniques and a lot of great videos on youtube on the subject.
