So you're saying that the only one who escaped and on whom the entire operation depended was the cat? I don't wanna presume too much... but I get the feeling that the real mastermind here was the cat. It also does my head in that it nobody suspected anything when two guys spent all their time unclogging the drain. Some of these stories are so funny, you wouldn't believe them in a movie or book.

You are so entertaining. Sterling T. Colson escaped from Kilby Prison in Montgomery, Alabama. The same prison the double amputee you mentioned that made it all the way to Atlanta. You said Jacksonville, FL, but don’t feel bad. Most people see Jacksonville and think Florida. There is a Jacksonville in Alabama too. That’s where that newspaper clip came from.

I was hoping my grandpa might have been an honorable mention 🤣 he wasn't but he's got a cool story still. He escaped from Warren county pa, (sorta like the other guy you saw all over your tv's last week) with his brother, sheriff accidently shot himself on a ricochet during the incident and Gramps got away by floating down the Allegheny. He managed to evade capture for quite some time by wearing women's clothing. Hell of a guy too.

On the "unclogging the drain" attempt, my guess is the warden had a guard check it out on Day 1 because inmates volunteering for stinky jobs does not happen. He saw how far they were getting and decided to let them wear themselves out digging until they were close, and then stopped them. Better to have those fellows tired at the end of each day, for a while.

Somewhere lies the body of a cat that was a true friend to some inmates. And the last warden is a hero for not only keeping hardened criminals out of the public but he also saved a very desperate man’s life. No way that plan would’ve worked in their favor.

I worked in Stateville prison as an inmate (different building from the article, same prison) and that was probably the most cockroaches I ever saw in my life, you'd have to be careful about cleaning the cafeteria because if you hit the wrong "piece of furniture" on accident you could cause a literal waterfall of roaches to come spilling out of things. I saw roaches in there big enough to bully the rats that were also in there. There were parts of the prison (F-house in particular) where you had to sleep with ear plugs to keep roaches from burrowing into your ears. Luckily enough I wasn't housed there, but if I was I'd want to escape too.
