enjoyed your tutorial on the 201-2. I worked for Singer years ago, demonstrating the machines etc. I had a 221-1 machine, gave it to my Aunt, and have just purchased another one. I am 84 yrs. young, still luv to sew, it keeps me going

Mary Smith What a great experience working with Singer to demonstrate these classic wonders! The Featherweight you gave your Aunt was a marvelous gift, and glad you found another to enjoy. Check out my videos on the 221, and I would encourage you comparatively to check out my exciting videos on the Singer 99 and 99K, as well. These Mighty Mites are shorter in overall bed length than the 221, and pack a dramatic punch with a motor about 2x larger!! Thank you for sharing your love and passion Mary, and I have no doubt your forever young outlook will continue to fuel your passion many years into the future!! Enjoy, and God bless, Scott

What an informative, well-done presentation of this beautiful machine. You explain the features and functionality as clearly as an excellent college professor. The excitement in your voice comes across and is extremely contagious. I feel like this is the gift I would like to give myself after making it to age 63, after some rough years. I have newer Singer machines, but I want to feel what it’s like to use the Rolls-Royce of Singer. All the little enticements make this irresistible. You’ve done an excellent job refurbishing this gem. Thank you for a great video,

Another nice feature of the 201 and the model 15's stitch length adjustment design, is the fact that besides not needing to look, once the length is set, it will sew in exactly the same holes as the forward direction, making a neater stitch when back tacking a seam.
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair 10 жыл бұрын
Hi David, You comment is spot on, and this feature does serve very well to reinforce seams, with a nice looking finished product. The key however to get this output consistently, particularly depending on the material sewn, is to adjust the presser foot pressure as the fabric gets thicker, and keep the feed dogs nice and clean so they can do their job. Insufficient presser foot pressure causes fabric slippage, and with that the uniformity of forward and reverse sewing stitch formations.. Thanks for the comment, Scott

Thanks for this video, yesterday I became the guardian of the family 1955 201 (I hesitate to use the word owner as I hope the machine out lasts me and goes to next keen sewer of a future generation of our family). I'm very excited to use it, not only as it is a fab machine but because of the family history that goes with this particular one, my Aunt had it from new and used it until a couple of years ago when she could no longer sew due to alzheimer's. The most wonderful thing happened when I opened the beautiful leather covered box - a smell hit my nose, gently at first, and the smell took me back to when I was 3 or 4and had ripped my coat at my Aunt and Uncle's farm, and my Aunt sewed it back up on this machine so my Mam wouldn't know and I wouldn't "get wrong". I hadn't thought of that day since, well, since that day, and now many more memories are surfacing. Thanks for the video, I'm now going to watch your others :)

You are a guardian of a very special treasure, and I hope your family sewing legacy continues long into the future....I know the earthy scent you're speaking of, and for me it takes me back to the many homes I've visited, the people I've met, stories shared, and machines I've been privileged to adopt into my family....now numbering more than 200.....Enjoy your "Rolls Royce of Singers," she has so much yet to give, and in return wants nothing more than the pleasure of serving and being useful.....Don't we all..? :)

CowCountryVintageSewing MachinesAndRestoration A new development, my other half was jealous of my sparkly 201, so after a quick scour of the internet we picked up a 1926 singer 66 that has a later electric motor on, fully working, £20 ($25) and less than 10 mins drive away from home. We've both promised each other to draw the line at two though! I'm finishing off non sewing projects as quickly as possible before I start using the Machine, and before my house is overrun by fabric thread and needles! What a great channel you have, thanks for all the info!

I loved the video. I am the lucky owner of 201. I bought her at a yard sale for....$25. I love sewing with her. The only time I have had her in the shop is when I needed the take up spring wire replaced...in the tension knob. Repair person is on vacation for another week....I do miss using my 201. I have a Bernina and I needed the foot control fixed. In conversation with the dealer, he offered a trade in...all my old black cast iron Singers for a new Bernina...Nope. Life is good.

That dealer needs to get up earlier to fool you, Darlene....LOL Bernina like Singer and Husqvarna, has a proud history, but these brands sadly have moved away from quality of engineering, and these machines are not what they used to be....Vintage is the genuine article, not the contemporary counterpart...Life is good, Darlene!.

Scott, I appreciate your video, I just bought my wife an NOS, or "new old stock" Singer 201-2, that has been in storage along with many other NOS or nearly NOS items that someone inherited and put up for auction, it was a bit pricey, but now that I have seen your video, I'm glad I had high bid. It also came with a huge box of extras, many of which we have no idea what they are for, but my wife is going to take classes on sewing, and I'm sure she will learn what they're for. Thank You Again, Duan

Dear Leia: I contemplated ignoring your remark, but was encouraged by several to respond and educate. This machine is bulletproof, and has been tested repeatedly in light industrial and even commercial settings around the world without a hiccup. Alex Askaroff, world renown for machine knowledge and evaluative expertise, stated this machine is so rugged it can take a direct hit from a nuclear missile. and still sew! While this is extreme, it makes a clear statement about the machine's ability.

Hi Duan, Sounds like you have a treasure trove of vintage machines....very jealous!! Contemporary classes will certainly equip her with basic sewing techniques, but rarely will they provide answers to the use of vintage attachments. Encourage her to check your area for Vintage Singer groups, or if you send me pics of the attachments, I'll gladly provide input on the application and use of each one. Good sewing, and enjoy those wonderful NOS machines!!

Hi Candice, I'm not sure about the original price tag, but I can tell you that each family that purchased one saw it as a major expense, and often along with a sizable down payment, had installment plans that ran as long as two years!! My take on this Rolls Royce of Singers? They are PRICELESS, and if properly restored and maintained become a precious heirloom to pass on to your kids, grand children, or a trusted friend....Enjoy

I just picked up a Singer 201 at a second hand store. I tested it and it runs and sews. It is a little rough in appears due to the front edge decal is worn off but the rest of her looks good. I oiled her but did not grease. Just wondering, should I take her in to be checked over by a repairman or is this something I can do?

Hi Margaret, there are a number of low abrasive solvents to use on the machine chrome, but I've gotten the best results from two: Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover, and kerosene. As I shared with Sue above, you can also use either of these solvents on the painted surfaces and decal work, as well. Gentle circle like motions typically work best, and as I told Sue, either a soft cotton cosmetic pad (80 pad pack at Wal-Mart about $2.50) or you can use a Q-tip swab, also. Gentle around decal work!! Enjoy!

Hi Linda, What an incredible find, and $15 is like stealing it!! :} Regarding the needle position, it's possible the needle has been bent, so try replacing it with a general purpose Schmetz 90. Make sure the needle is fully inserted, and the sewing foot is installed correctly. You can download a FREE copy of the instruction manual for your machine in the description section of my video. The painted work on the applique shown in my video is more in the realm of decorative acrylic painting with standard brush strokes, not dots or small touches as you would find in stippling. Any cloth type paint should get the job done, and you can use a standard FIRM acrylic brush. Enjoy your Rolls Royce of Singers, and let me know the quilting goes! Warm wishes, Scott

The bulb on my 201-2 gets hot enough to WELD STEEL I think. I have a cool scar on my hand, looks like the Virgin Mary, a burn from the stock bulb. I am waiting for an LED replacement bulb to hopefully minimize ongoing INJURIES, solar flares and explosions...

+J.P. Stone - Hi J.P., It's strange your bulb is getting that HOT, unless the watts are significantly higher than the recommended 25 watts. Not sure where you're sourcing your new LED replacement, but Home Depot is worth a stop if in your area, and their prices are hard to beat on bulbs that work well in Singers. Thanks for your questions, and Good Sewing on your amazing Rolls Royce f Singers!! All the best, Scott

Hi Buffalobigboy69, The 401 is a fantastic machine, and one of the few direct drive singers that typically has an ALL METAL worm gear to drive the balance wheel. The only potential disadvantage is the 401 (particularly the 401-A) has mostly an aluminum body, and can have some tipping tendency if operating under a super heavy load, or while pushing thicker material through the machine needle. Enjoy your 401, and Good sewing, Scott

I was given a 201-2 singer machine with a case It is oak beautiful sew amazing with every kind of foot you would want. It was owned by a 98 year old and she was the only one that had ever used it I had bought a feather weight 201 and the parts work on both . but bobbins are diffent the 201-2 but I don't know what size bobbin to wind the bobbin it has little hole that is requied . Can you tell where I can find bobbins for the 201-2 . It is 1952 model Thank you Melody . Do you have other video on the 201-2 to show what this machine will do I basiclly sow straight stitch an it beautiful

@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair 7 жыл бұрын
You can purchase bobbins for both the 221 and 201 on EBay, but be careful, some after market bobbins are not engineered well, and can stick in the raceway, and even damage your machine. Original bobbins assuming they are rust-free, are typically the best choice.

Thanks, SO much. I picked up this machine, in a HUGE cabinet, for $15. As I clean, sort, and explore, it seems to be working OK, but the needle looks like it's right up against the right side of the foot. I'm worried that the least nudge will cause it to hit the foot. Is there a way to adjust the needle position? If this isn't your field, can you please tell me where I might find the answer? Thanks for the videos. I can't wait to get this cleaned up and ready to quilt. Speaking of which, how was that stippling on the quilt done, please?

Isn't the buttonholer in the pink case for a slant needle machine?
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair 9 жыл бұрын
+UpCountryNana - Thanks for the great question! Singer produced both the Slant and Straight version buttonholer in the cool boat style containers. Below are each model currently FOR SALE on EBay, and unless closely examined, look identical: STRAIGHT VERSION: www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Singer-Buttonholer-Pink-Case-No-489500-489510-w-instructions-/301853715822 SLANT VERSION: www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Singer-Sewing-Attachment-Slant-Button-Holer-489500-PINK-4-Templates-/262240947441?hash=item3d0ec74cf1:g:7x8AAOSwaA5Wis7t To allow for the creation of the buttonhole, there needs to be a fairly wide sewing field, and that can give the impression that they function in the same manner, but they don't. Very much like the specialized attachment, commonly used on machines like the Featherweight, that can take a straight stitch machine, and give the impression that it can sew a zig zag stitch, but this is strictly a product of the engineering of the attachment. Hope this helps....Again, an EXCELLENT question - thanks! Warm regards, Scott

@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair 8 жыл бұрын
+J. Caoilfhionn Marie (s0urgrap3s) -You could go as high as 300-D if the machine is serviced and conditioned to the highest level...as seen in my videos. Run the heavier thread in the bobbin case, not on top. In lieu of excessively heavy threads (waxed or otherwise) that can stress even a mighty machine like the 201, consider looking at Kevlar threads available in the marketplace today. They have greater tensile strength, less of a stretch factor, and feed more smoothly at higher speeds. It's important for you to understand as you shop for 201 machines, they are NOT all equal, and depending on the servicing, conditioning and restorative steps taken, will fall well short of the machines presented in my videos.Thanks for the question, and for being a Subscriber! Hi Scott, just pick up one of these black beauty's a week ago and it had this awful rusty looking film all over it, so I used everything even bought rust removal rubbing compound metal polish nothing removed this except for WD-40, so wish I had found your video before it would have saved a lot of the old decals on my machine I didn't remove all of them someone else had started this and seen they couldn't get it off and then jump dump it at the goodwill that is where I found her in the cabinet full of accessories, some I don't even know how to use didn't have the manual, and needed the foot pedal rewired so I got her "Black Betty or Elizabeth Jackson" I'm thinking of naming her one of those leaning towards the 2nd one. It sounds so Southern, Rich, and reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor and since I am from the south east, found her in Jackson, I think it suits this wonderful machine. But I have been researching every site I could get my hands on and taken pictures before during and after so I don't forget where a screw goes. OK my question, while researching I found this gear driven beauty takes wicks, and singer motor lubricant in order to work can you do a video on that and show me where I can purchase the right stuff for my machine, I have used naval jelly to remove the rust from her needle bar and other chrome parts and then shining them with chrome polish and metal polish on the other areas. I have found after using the WD-40 very lightly and quick and then getting it off fast it removed the film and then putting singer sewing machine oil on a cotton cloth shined it up really good. I have taken the motor apart half way haven't found out yet how to get the rest of it off but I will, so wish I had your knowledge of machines, so I could make her like a brand new one. But I am learning as I go. And since I only paid $8.00 for the whole thing and she wasn't in great shape to start with I figure I can't damage her anymore but just maybe she might be a great sewing machine again. Thanks for all your advice and wonderful videos. Markay

Привет! Как работает Singer 5532 работает? Я хочу знать, оценку профессионала.
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair

+PJ V - Hi PJ, Yes, on my KZbin channel in the "ABOUT" section, I have a number of helpful links, to include one for looking up Singer serial numbers. I took the liberty of looking up the one you shared, and discovered the following: Model - 15K (not 15-91) 100,000 were made in that production series Your machine was born - December 24, 1947 For ongoing tips, tricks, and notice of newly released instructional and tutorial videos on my channel, please consider subscribing! Thanks so much for visiting, and for sharing your question. Warm wishes, Scott

Hello how much do one of this machine cost plus shipping to Singapore?
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair
@CowCountryVintageSewingRepair 8 жыл бұрын
Dear Slipsch: Delivered, you would be looking at a total cost of about $850 USD. The shipping cost alone, due to dimensions and weight, would be almost $200 USD. You would receive a FULLY Restored machine, attachments, including a walking foot, bobbins, needles, and the list goes on. I just sent another machine to Japan, and would love to earn your business.

Hello I live in the UK and want to know how to get myself one of these machine. I used my mothers as a child and having recently seen a machine in very poor condition in a charity store, thought it would be wonderful to try and locate and purchase one in good condition. Please help.

Hello Scott, I was wondering which is a better machine over all, a Necchi BU or a Singer 201-2 ? Also which of the older machines is the best over all machine ? Singer, Necchi, ect ?? Thank you for any advice you can provide. Chris

+SBCftw - Hi Chris - I love both machines, but for overall sewing, particularly super heavy-duty, I would lean towards the Singer 201. (more) If super heavy-duty and the capacity to sew decorative stitches is of interest as well, I would draw the Husqvarna Viking Green machines into the mix, too. My favorite of these is the 21A, which I currently just serviced and restored, and will be offering to buyers shortly. These go VERY FAST, particularly with the rare cams, carry case, and many other goodies I'm including, so you will want to move quick if interested.. Please let me know what else I can do, and how you want to proceed, Kind regards, Scott

Question, I am having to buy a sewing machine. What is your opinion on a Viking Sapphire 830? I had a vintage Viking 51, sadly due to petty politics, it was given to a "blood relative ". As I am only a in-law. It has sadden me, because I used the machine weekly. So now this other machine has come for sale. I just do not know much about it.

I was given a 201-2 and would love to have a base like the one in your video. Do you have any idea where to get one? I've looked on-line, but no luck. Thanks!

Margaret, I've had customers pay as much as $20 for this manual, particularly in it's ORIGINAL form - get a FREE copy at ismacs.net. KZbin will not allow me to put the complete hyper link in this response! Email me at sgeller@new.rr.com, and I'll gladly forward a .PDF copy. Enjoy your Rolls Royce of Singers!!

very nice video. I wish I still had my old Singer treadle that I had in the 60s when I taught myself to sew. I recently replaced my dead New Home with a Janome Magnolia and wish I had found this first. Would love to trade it in for one of these, I'm sewing wallets and bags now and the Janome is not happy

Hello hollymamma, I noticed your question on a base for your machine, I found a heavy duty plastic carry case on eBay sold by " ALLBRANDS" Item number 390496867033 If you put that item number in the search box on eBay it will take you right to his sight, just make sure you get one that is for a FLATBED, not one for a freearm, only ones for a flatbed have hinge pins to allow you to mount it permanently. Hope this helps.

Hi Sue, You got that machine for a steal....Call your local Police Department and turn yourself in, immediately!! :) Enjoy your Rolls Royce of Singers, and to get and maintain a natural luster on your machine, use a cosmetic pad lightly soaked with kerosene - even safe if gently applied to decal work!! Enjoy, and I'll be watching the news for your trial for stealing that beauty!! Your ratings will be throught the roof!! :)

It's a bit irresponsible to tell people that they can do super heavy duty sewing on this potted motor machine. Yes, it will do it, but what about when the fiber gear strips and they can't replace it?? It would be safer to try that on a belt driven machine, at least those are easy to fix.
