Just found your channel. I really like the cob house tours, and building information. It's so much more beautiful to see the organic design and aesthetic of the curved, soft colors and shapes. That would be my dream home❤️

You should come to Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage and tour our homes. We are the biggest collection of natural buildings east of the Rockies.

Love this but How are you able to get past zoning restrictions
@HardcoreSustainable Жыл бұрын
There are parts of the US that don't have building codes. That's part of it, but also if your county uses International Building Code, there are provisions for strawbale buildings in that code. Many places now allow strawbale and other natural buildings as well. You just have to look into it.

I subscribed to yr chanel. How does cob hold up in rainy weather? I really like these cob tours!
@HardcoreSustainable2 жыл бұрын
Cob is usually considered a material for building solid walls. We use earthen plaster (which is basically the same as cob as far as the ingredients) on these strawbale houses, and earthen plaster is much better as an interior finish. I wouldn't use it myself for exterior finish because you need to treat it with linseed oil or something like that or have really big overhangs to prevent weathering. If you don't do this rain will just wash it right off. I did a lime plaster exterior on my house. Lime will hold up much better to the elements than earthen plaster.

Love your house. I want one but don't think the town of Island would like it very much.
@HardcoreSustainable7 жыл бұрын
I don't know where that is but you might be surprised. The International Building Code is the standard used locally in a lot of towns and counties, and it now allows strawbale buildings. You might not be able to build something quite like this, but it's worth looking into.

Nice brother. How do they power the place? Thanks for taking us with you. God Bless.
@HardcoreSustainable7 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I didn't see any system set up yet, but they aren't actually living in the place yet. It isn't quite finished. Thanks for watching.

I saw this house when it was under construction last September. It really was a great place on the top of the hill in a holler. I didn't know what a holler was besides the reference that Patsy Cline made to it in one of her songs. I asked. About thee mushroom farms as that is what they do there. I'd like to know how your mushroom annulated logs are coming along?
@HardcoreSustainable7 жыл бұрын
I'll have to revisit the mushroom logs in a future video, Mary. They don't look so hot right now.

I'd guess it was about 600 sq ft, but I didn't measure it.

Sorry, I don't know. I'd guess close to 30'.

Sorry to hear about the inoculated mushroom logs. It sounded so interesting to add oyster mushrooms after shitichi mushrooms. That is if I have that right? It has been a while. I'm still interested to hear what happened as it is often said we learn even more from what doesn't work then we do from what goes right. Thanks for sharing so much with us.

I can not figure out the reason the rafters poked out of the roof sheathing. They seem to be already fungi infested.
@HardcoreSustainable7 жыл бұрын
I don't know either, but since they are different lengths, I would guess they plan to cut them off at some point. Not sure why they wouldn't have done that earlier.
@Rafikius7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for such a prompt answer :) Well... as I was taught it was crucial to their longevity. If you have any chances to contact the owners, drop 'em a line with my suggestion,pls I know that maybe I'm paranoid about the issue but I saw a strawbale house burn because of J tube rocket, I'd go only for a closed firebox system like batchbox of Peter Vder berg. Hugs and good luck to them anyway. btw. I was also pondering why they didn't go for the reciprocal roof structure
@HardcoreSustainable7 жыл бұрын
I don't know why they didn't do a reciprocal roof. They did one on Gobcobatron, a house Ziggy built when he first lived at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage. They were building it for someone else, so maybe they didn't want the reciprocal roof.

I live near here, what would it cost to build me one of these?
@HardcoreSustainable6 жыл бұрын
I don't know personally, but you could contract Ziggy and April to build one for you. theyearofmud.com

As much or more than conventional building if you pay someone to do the work. Faaaar less (up to 80% less) if you do all the work yourself

It's very nice, but the problem with many of these structures is that there is more "hippy" than there is "traditional". That's fine if you dig hippy. But don't serve up hippy as if it were a helping of traditional kraftwerk.
@HardcoreSustainable2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean. Strawbale isn't traditional in many places because insulation wasn't traditional in a lot of places. Not sure what you mean by hippy.
