So proud of him! I know it's so tempting for kids to try to get a reaction from the animals (I was guilty of that myself as a child), and that's where parents should step in. It's disrespectful to these intelligent creatures who are trapped and mocked everyday of their lives, but it also comes with risk. There should be rules for visitors to follow. I don't think other animals like lions or tigers are capable of doing such damage. This is literally protective glass and I've seen videos of other animals trying to break it but they can't. Its hard to believe this gorilla actually made a huge crack on protective glass.

Reminds me of something I saw at the NC Zoo. The silverback, Mosuba, had cracked the glass before I arrived at the enclosure. I can't be sure (it is very unlikely, as it is a top-notch zoo) but it almost looked like it was cracked on the visitor side, meaning he could have got out if he wanted to. He was taking a nap with a female when I got to see him, so evidently he was just letting off steam when he hit the glass. Another female, Olympia, did try to scale the wall but failed. Turns out she tried to escape her previous zoo as well, so she has something of a reputation for escape attempts. Olympia has since been moved to yet another zoo, but Mosuba is still there. I hope I can see her at her new zoo one day. I was impressed with her intelligence.

Here are some great tips to going to the zoo next time 1. Go to the silver back or any gorilla species enclosure and start beating your chest while have showing your teeth because gorillas love seeing if your brushing your teeth (Don’t actually unless being ripped apart by a giant ape is on your bucket list or just how you want to die)

Silverbacks are just males, they're not a separate species. All male gorillas are called silverbacks after puberty, and during puberty they are "blackbacks." There is no special name for adult females, though.

We were separated by 2-inch glass from a 500-pound tiger at the Peoria zoo in the 90s. My toddler came by on a wheeled scooter and the cat started stalking her. We got out of there before the cat tested the glass. Kind of reminds me of this. Tigers are the size of ponies, but longer and more claws and teeth.

Yes, Gorillas are much faster and agile than many people think. You can find video of two silverback brothers playfully fighting and see how fast they are and the moves they use. Many people think they are slow and only eat and sleep.
