Had a neighbor that was basically nuts, he found a huge nest in a tree on the back of his land. He went out and sprayed varnish all over it, let it dry, and did it again several times until he finally cut it down, put it in an air tight box, for a year. Later he donated it to the high school for study, they cut it in half to show the interior.

Chemist here. Occasionally we get wasps in the chem lab and we treat it like chemists would. We shoot them with solvent we keep in squeezy bottles for working in the lab. We try to shoot them out of the air and make a game out of it. Dichloromethane dissolves their wings nearly instantly (also not flammable) and kills them Ethanol (pure) and Methanol work great too Isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) probably works great too and it's available for home use. Gotta love the effects of solvent on wasps.

@@ColinClarke-pb8ee sort of, gasoline (and diesel which is less refined) are mixetures of hydrocarbons which will first intoxicate, then suffocate them and drown them. The hydrocarbons probably dissolve parts of their bodies as well. Similar effects would happen with Humans if scaled up (hundreds of gallons exposure and trapped in it).

What most people don't know is that typical Wasp and Hornet spray contains very little active pesticide ingredients. Most of them depend on highly volatile chemicals such as methylene chloride or tri-chloroethane which have a very low boiling point. A wasp's normal body temperature is around 106 to 108 degrees and the chemical evaporates very fast and causes a cooling effect. The wasp dies from the drastically reduced body temperature.

Bullshit. Wasp and hornet spray is a neurotoxin. Prallethrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, is one of the most common. Two of the most common brands, Spectracide and Raid, both contain prallethrin. Neurotoxins interfere with the nervous system in the insects which immediately kills them.

One year they built a nest on a window at my house, bigger than that one. You could see the enter workings of the nest. It was incredible to see how hard they worked and the order they came in and out of the nest. We didn’t tear it down until winter came and they all moved out. But FYI, our had 2 entrances. 1 main entrance and 1 toward the rear. The nest against the glass was all open, you could see many different chambers, you could see the queen laying eggs and the workers covering them. We watched new ones being born, it was amazing the enter workings of a massive nest.

Husband was stung by a bald-faced hornet on the top of his head about a month ago. We have fruit trees in our yard. The hornets love the peaches and pears that fall to the ground. He bent over to pick up a pear and that’s when the hornet stung him on top of the head. He had anaphylaxis, went to hospital, took 4 epinephrine treatments plus steroids to get it under control. He now carries an epi pen. We searched for the nest, but never found it.

I knew it was going to probably be a bad reaction based on that. His feet went numb after that, developed hives from the waist up, lips swelled up, then felt like he was going to pass out. All of this happened within 10 minutes. He was going to take a shower, but I told him no, that we were going to the hospital ER. Didn't have anything else other than my isopropyl on hand at the time, didn't want to get stung, and found out how effective it is in instant wasp death. 😆

1st video I've seen from this channel. Maybe you already have done it, but using expanding spray foam on one of those nests would be interesting to see. Would it fill the nest? Would they die from the heat created by the chemical reaction that causes the foam to expand?

You should try getting aerosolized contact cement it comes out in a white stringy adhesive. It’s used a lot in countertop making. It would for sure prevent them from coming out of the nest as it would create kind of a white web over the opening which they would get stuck on.

You should try polyurethane spay insulation foam. With the straw you could instantly block the opening and fill up the nest. It takes a while to cure and a little around the outside would stick all the ones returning to the nest.
@normwetherbee3403

I'm sure you've probably covered it before but I've had luck with something called Delta Dust (contains deltamethrin). You just puff some up into an entrance of the nest and they track it in. A few puffs over a couple hours and the entire hive is dead the next day. The jungle site has it (and the bulb blower I used) if your local hardware store doesn't.

This is how pest control techs treat yellow jacket nests that are behind siding, in the ground etc.. when the nest is not accessible for a physical removal. it not usually necessary to use a dust if it’s an easily accessible bald hornets, but it will work, just a longer process. The fastest most efficient way to eliminate bald hornets is to use a fast acting knockdown aerosol pyrethrin spray. Just insert the straw into the opening of the nest and fog it for a few seconds. A little goes a long way.. within 5 mins the majority of the population will be gone and the nest can be easily removed.
@bjh1964

In the time it takes for Delta (or any other) Dust to work, one can use an aerosol fogger such as ProControl to eliminate 4 hornet nests of the size in the video.
