A lot of the time they're rescue animals and have also had offspring in captivity so the zoo needs to care for them as they're not out in the wild learning survival like that, they'd be in serious trouble. What I learned was most of the time these animals are endangered from mass poaching for many religious and superstitious reasons, plus decorative reasons too. That itself is sad, but coming down on poachers isn't easy and you'd need to rescue animals in these locations so that you can come down on the poachers without having other poachers hunt behind your back because you're too busy and you're just a small crew of people trying to help. In more progressed nations you'd find that it is illegal anyway to just import exotic animals for zoo's. They days are gone when the nasty people would bring back animals separated from families to show off and perform in zoo's. You must be having flashbacks to the victorian era of which we are far beyond now.

@@1977ajax My understanding is the word soul grew out of the ancient Greek word for "breath". Pneuma. If you were alive you were breathing. If you were deceased your breath or soul had left you. It just meant you weren't breathing anymore. Today it seems to have no meaning at all, it's just a throwaway word referencing some amorphous 'whatever you want it to be' thing. Basically a junk woo woo word.
