Although i really like some of the new stuff they put out, i agree. They kind of lost their identity and their sound became so overly polished, you barely could even guess it's their music. I love how gorillaz made 1.film music and 2.film trailer music. This is because in the story the gorillaz wanted to make a movie

They wanted to in real life, as well. They went to many movie studios, but none of them wanted to make the movie in a way that reflected Jamie's vision. Notably, they went to Dreamworks, but they wanted to make the movie resemble Shrek in it's humour and visual style, and plans fell through. Eventually, the movie was cancelled, and the explanation in the lore was creative differences , and Murdoc nearly killing 2D on set.
