One of the saddest, most tragic and horrible videos of a raptor attack - or anything - that I have ever seen. So awful when viewed in its entirety. I know it’s part of nature, but we (or maybe just “I”) don’t usually actually see this side of nature’s reality. It plays out like a brutal and never-ending horror show. It’s really shocking and near paralyzing to my own sense of life. We’re all so very sheltered. However, even though I hate the event right down to my very core, I truly respect your courage and for watching and posting this in your always very caring and gentle manner. Your coverage is always unbiased, yet still full of empathy and sympathy. Thanks, Liznm, for being able to share the “bad” along with all of the wonderful “good” that you do show. @liznm-natur-channel5 жыл бұрын
What I know is that they do not usually hunt at this altitude. The goshawk is a forest bird. He hunts in the woods. BTW- He can kill hare. A hare weighs much more than a goshawk. They only hunt in the treetops when food is scarce. Then there are symbioses between the animals. An example, the Goshwak is a typical companion bird of the black stork. I think everything in nature has its order and meaning. No sense made this massacre for me. The only explain is, that one of the chicks has defended himself. The goshawk responds to movement. The parents can become victims themselves. They weigh almost nothing! Parents first care about their own survival. Always! With every bird species. This can be observed on Eagle Nests and also on black stork nest When a deadly enemy comes, the parents leave their chicks. BTW: The goshawk doesn't wait until the prey is big enough. They eat everything from 10 g to 3.5 kg

Good video. I wonder if the parents had only two chicks if it would have been different. With only two chicks to feed, the chicks might have been bigger and stronger and more able to fend off an attack. Also, if the chicks had another week to grow it might have been different. The chicks appear to weak & inexperienced to defend themselves. The Goshawk in the beginning does major damage with its talons. It appears to be sticking it's talons into the chest and back of the chicks which wounds and weakens two of the chicks severely. The chick on its back was to weak to do anything after the Goshawk was poking it's talons into it. The one chick that was brave enough to stand face to face with the Goshawk looks like it either got choked to death or a talon hit a major blood vessel in the neck. My heart goes out to the 2nd chick that appears to die 2nd. Having the weight of the hawk on your back, not having the strength to fight back and calling for help makes for heart wrenching video even if it's nature. It looks like the parents gave a half hearted try to defend their chicks at the start and near the end.

@umbrascitor20793 жыл бұрын
The instinct seems to be to hold still and rely on camouflage. It's possible that statistically this gives them a better survival rate than engaging in a fight (they'll either lose, or succeed in scaring off the predator only to succumb to debilitating or fatal injuries). Notice that even the chick who puts up a fight relies heavily on the "puff up and look too big to mess with" strategy more than direct combat. Also notice how well it seems to work until the chick loses ground and the hawk manages to wrestle it. Injury avoidance instincts are strong on both sides. Sure, a more aggressive defense could help them survive, but in what condition? A broken wing or foot leads to starvation and death without having reproduced. If there are more cases where a hiding strategy succeeds (maybe you lose one or two chicks who stood their ground and drew attention to themselves, while a couple of motionless ones were ignored... or hiding makes the predator overlook the nest in the first place) then that's the strategy that will dominate. Even if it doesn't work every time, it just has to work enough.

@@umbrascitor2079 to me, it seemed the best chance the last of the chicks to survive would have been to jump off the nest and then hide motionless in the vegetation. I realize that's only delaying the outcome since even if the goshawk does not find it, it will starve to death. Yes there are birds that walk off the nest as soon as they hatched. That's right hatches, and walks away, no parents needed. It's an australian bird, forgot its name.

The part where the Goshawk plucks the feathers off the chicks!😭... the most traumatizing part for me every time the hawk does that. It’s spine-chilling.

I've watched the video more than once. And I think little chicks haven't eaten in a while. Because she couldn't even defend herself, and she's bigger than the baz. 😢

So if one of the Osprey parents tried to chase it off in the beginning, then why didn't they come back and try to kill the Goshawk?

They have no change against a goshawk.

Someone on another channel said that the goshawk killed the female osprey, in addition to her young. Goshawks are very strong, tough predators.
@vadimpm12904 жыл бұрын
It seems that osprey's brain is even less suited to fight the hawk than it's body. Having such a powerful feet, the osprey could grab the hawk from behind while he was sitting on the chick.
@goognamgoognw66373 жыл бұрын
@@liznm-natur-channel well, it depends on how badly the goshawlk wants it. Many prey survive much stronger predator if the parents know how to harrass the predator. Look at magpies or crows.

Parents were out hunting , an osprey is much bigger than this goshawk with far bigger talons, it wouldn’t have a problem fighting it off , they fight off great horn owls in the middle of the night
