Thank you so very, very much for sharing this- the Gospel itself, (which I always love to read and to hear discussed,) and the translations that we English-speakers would otherwise have missed out on. I want to share one quick anecdote from my own life, too, vis a vis: the way Sri Ramakrishna's teachings ARE beneficial: Quite a long time ago, I myself was struggling with dependency on alcohol, and I heard the story of Sri Ramakrishna's advice to Girish Ghosh, so I did as he told him to do. I raised my glass to Mother every time I felt compelled to drink, and I poured out libations to her, all the time wishing in my heart that I had the strength to give it up... and she cured me of the habit completely! Praise Holy Mother Kali, I was completely released from the grip of alcohol. Just wanted to put that out there in case anybody else is struggling. She WILL help you if you ask her. Chicken was indeed taboo in most Hindu households in Bengal till about 75 years ago. Mutton was always ok. Chicken would not be cooked and served inside the house.

For the gentleman asking the question, on Tues and Sat, even now if someone were to go to Dakshineswar temple on Tues or Sat, one will have to face huge queue. Those are the special days of Kali Puja.

About the siddhi thing I think Thakur was giving an example of divine intoxication. You cannot get divine intoxication unless you love God , repeat His/Her Name with love, that would be consuming siddhi for normal degrading intoxication. But for real God intoxication also you have to consume it in form of Love for God. Jai Maa 🙏

Jai Maa ! Jai Ramakrishna ! About Discusion going around 57:58 , Shri Ramakrishna have already said that the person is the slave to his wife and worldly. Further the Master (Sri Ramakrishna) says he was impudent to say those things to Balaram. Quite obvious the slave to lust cannot know who the Paramhamsha is. He(impudent slave of wife) was referring to someone whom he thought or took as Pramhamsha. So it is quie clear. Only Paramhamsha can rightly say who is Paramhamsha. For me only Shri Ramakrishna and Holy Mother can say definately who is Paramhamsha or at what spiritual level one is. Other point Thakur would never visit house of a slave of wife (lust).

I think chicken meat is considered dirty because they were mostly raised uncaged and survived on discarded leftover food (feces etc. in India) and mostly poor muslims used to raise them. I saw this being practiced in my maternal uncle's village in West Bengal who are brahmins.

I think Swami Medhananda should write his own translation.. maybe he means well , but it comes off as bit jarring for him to be constantly critiquing Swami Nikhilanadajis translation. 😅

I think it's good he reads the original Bengali and gives his opinion. Initial translation was done keeping an Western audience in mind,.for ex God is refered as He, etc.

When we read the Gospel what are we looking for Exact meaning and translation with or without interpretative bias (Contre Advaita pro whatever) Or illumination for our spiritual journey- as Swami Bhuteshananda of revered memory does)

Regarding the chicken curry episode, This is not Ramakrishna for sure. Brahmins in India take Veg diet. It's not enforced equally everywhere though, ex in South India it's followed strictly. Those days 'Paramahansa' word was used commonly, monks in general used to be called Paramahansas. It's there in the Gospel, one ppl used to come to Dakshineswar to see a good 'Paramahansa' initially.
