Does it tie into the white neutral wire? Or do I just cap it off ? Thanks for any help
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
No, the red wire wire goes to the light fixture. Whatever wire is the light's "live" (usually black) is considered the "load" (since it doesn't have any power until it is paired with the live power delivering line). The light's neutral and the neutral from the live line should be joined together with the switch's neutral. Be very careful not to confuse the live wire with the load wire. One carries voltage while the other accepts it. If you don't know which is which, you'll need a tester or multi-meter to determine this or hire an electrician.

@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
Hm, I'm not sure, there may be a compatibility issue because of the Wattage/Amperage needs of the ceiling fan. This one goes up to 1650 watts and 15 Amps. If your ceiling fan is below that threshold, I don't see why it wouldn't work for you. Just make sure your electrical box has all 4 of the required wires inside before ordering.

Hi, I need helps ! What do I do if I only have one black and one white wire ? 1:41 1:42
@ReviewedByPhil Жыл бұрын
There are two scenarios: 1. If the switch only has two wires in the box (e.g. one wire coming in and one wire going out) then new wiring with 3 wires each will need to be run to the light fixture and also back to the circuit breaker. 2. If instead you have two sets of black and white wires (but no green) one set going out to the light and one set going to the breaker, in some wiring installations, the two wires come out of a hard metal tube and this casing acts as the third "green wire" (ground) so you would connect the switch's green wire to that. If you have no ground at all, new wiring will have to be run to the switch and/or light fixture in order to use this smart switch as in scenario 1.
@ufmam62543 жыл бұрын
You mentioned labeling the 4 wires, but it the video there are only 3, where did this 4th magical wire come from?
@ReviewedByPhil3 жыл бұрын
I think you're referring to 1:59 where I show the existing wires on the switch: live, load, and ground. The fourth wire is *not* attached to the switch, which is the white neutral, and it is inside the gang box (if you look in the gang in the background you'll see three white wires twisted together). Neutral wires do not need to be connected to the existing switch because in this configuration they are just used to complete the circuit loop by connecting the neutral from the circuit breaker to the neutral from the light fixture. At 2:05, I pull these wires out so I can create a pigtail to connect to the new smart switch. The smart switch requires this wire because the WiFi module needs to stay "on" all the time to remain connected to your home network; to do this, there has to be a completed circuit loop feeding into it regardless of the on/off status of the switch controlling the light fixture.

@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
The red wire should go to the wire that leads to the light fixture. You'll need at least 5 wires in your box. A live (black coming from your breaker box), two neutrals (white coming from the breaker box and another white coming from the light fixture), a load (black wire coming from the light fixture) and at least one ground typically green/bare copper (you may have two, one from the breaker box and possibly one from light fixture) If you have more than one ground, both can be connected to the green wire.

I know I have some Gosund switches but some are a different brand (I think) but still are detected by my Gosund app so fine by me because it's convenient. I just know some look different than the ones you show but I'll proceed lol. At any rate...my current issue is I recently installed two smart switches connected to four different lights, three of which are outside (one switch) and one of which is inside (the other switch). The old setup was 3 switches [(a switch for two deck lights, a switch for the carport light (the 3 outside lights), and the final switch for the kitchen sink (inside, if course)]. The switches all work but the wifi lights stay on which is not the case for all the other switches and plugs I have set up in my house thus far. I suspect it has something to do with the daisy chaining I did with the neutral wire to get them to function how I wanted. Basically I had to combine the carport and deck light neutrals to get it to function. I suspect I should have added another separate neutral wire for the carport (didn't need one before since it was an old dimmer with just a live in and out) but don't know how exactly. Any tips?

Sorry, I'm not sure if it will work in a multi setup, though I've seen smart switches marketed specifically for 3-way and multi-pole use, I am not sure what the differences would be for wiring. I will say, however, that you can use the switch without hooking it up to WiFi and if will simply function as a manual switch.

Can these switches be added to an end of circuit' (switch loop)? Where I am challenged is that the switch has a hot (black) and a red (load to fixture) but both the black and white on a switch loop at some time act as a hot cancelling out the neutral. Many thanks!
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
No. A switch loop won't work because the switch itself requires both a hot and neutral to be present as it needs a constant complete circuit in order to stay powered and connected to your WiFi network. In a switch loop where only a hot is running in and out of your switch gang, you only have a completed circuit when the switch is in the on/open position. In the off position, the switch itself would be off, thus disconnecting it from your WiFi, which defeats the purpose of having a smart switch. Since it's not designed to function as such, I don't know if this switch would even be able to turn on and off in a loop configuration.

No, not in the sense that you can set a timed shutoff duration for each *manual* activation. You would have to create a countdown timer using the app after you manually turn on the switch. However, you can simply put the fan on an _automatic_ schedule and have it come one every 2 hours for 30 minutes daily, or on certain days, for example.

Bit of a long shot, as the video is nearly a year old, but I'll ask my question. I installed both a regular Gosund switch and two dimmers in my house. The dimmers work by voice command with Alexa, but the regular switch (in the kitchen) does not. Alexa says, "Kitchen doesn't support that." Did you have issues with that or do you know how to fix that? Thanks!
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
What command exactly are you using with the regular switch? For mine I simply say "turn on" or "turn off living room lights." It could be an Alexa recognition thing too, as sometimes Alexa has pre-programmed settings, like Kitchen could be a reserved word referring to the whole room, and not just the lights. Try renaming the light switch temporarily to something else and using the voice command again. If it works after that, it's just a naming issue and you'll likely just have to choose something else that doesn't use the word Kitchen.

@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can still control the switch's power whether or not you initially turn it off manually or through the app. It doesn't matter; both actions perform the same exact function. The only time you can't control the switch via the app is if your WiFi router goes offline. Then the switch is no longer connected to a network which would allow remote access to it via the app.

What I noticed is that if you are using the standard faceplate, sometimes the screws that come with your standard plate are a little bit undersized. The plastic bottom hole of this switch is not threaded, for your screw to hold it has to be a bit larger to make it's own thread in the plastic. So if you are screwing in the bottom one and you feel no resistance, try a different, a tiny bit thicker screw.

All you say is “all four wires must be connected correctly” WHAT is correctly I only have two wires to my old switch and new one has four. Which ones you tie tougher?
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
Then you won't be able to complete the installation. Four wires are required for proper use, as shown in the instruction's wiring diagram. Your electrical switch box must have a live, neutral, ground, and load. The live wire is usually black and carries the electricity out from your circuit breaker. The neutral is typically white and carries the electricity back to the circuit breaker to complete the circuit. You should have two neutrals, one that goes back to the box and one that goes to the light fixture. The ground wire is typically copper and bare and is grounded. The load is the wire that goes to your light fixture, this is typically black. The reason I say "wired correctly" in the video is because I marked the wires with the included sticker labels, as shown at 1:57 and neutral shown at 2:03, and those correspond to the same colors/labels on the switch, (see 0:57). So once you have the wires in your box properly labeled, you just match the labels together and put the wire nuts on them. Some wiring in older homes don't have ground wires or are missing return neutrals, which unfortunately means they aren't compatible with a smart switch unless new wire is run.

If you have 2 live-in wires feeding two existing switches then keep them separated and feed each new switch with its corresponding live-in wire. If only one live-in is feeding both of the two old switches, such as with a fan and light switch, then you should also feed both of the new ones with it. In other words replace the existing switches with the new ones using the exact same wiring scheme.

A reviewer at Amazon had that same problem, and they said that they enlarged the opening with a metal file; I did the same and was able to get the switch to fit the plate. I'm amazed that yours fit so easily; maybe plastic switch plates have bigger openings?
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have noticed that metal gang boxes tend to be smaller by a fraction, maybe 1/16" or 1/8" but it's enough to prevent more "modern" switches that have more electronic components (like WiFi, smart sensors etc.) which can be a pain when installing upgrades to older homes. That's not to say a new home won't have metal boxes, but I think the trend for new construction is towards the plastic ones. I installed the GoSund switch in a home that was completely renovated within the last few years.

It sounds like you may have attached the live wire that's powering the outlets in the room to the load on the switch, so that when you flip the switch the outlets turn on and off with the ceiling lights. If you didn't want this behavior, you'll have to identify the live wire that's going to your outlet and instead of attaching it to the red load wire, attach it to the black live wire. This will allow the outlets to have continuous power from a completed circuit _before_ the switch cutoff. Only the circuit that you want to be controlled by the switch, e.g. ceiling lights, should be connected to the load line on the switch.

No, it won't work for that, but you can probably use a smart outlet like this one: geni.us/m65r [Amazon Affiliate Product Link] A few things to consider, the smart outlet Amperage and max Watts has to be able to handle your AC's power, and your AC has to be the kind that can come on right away when it is plugged into an outlet (have a physical on/off switch that you can leave in the on position). If your AC has a separate button you have to press to get it to start cooling, or a remote control is required to turn it on, then it will NOT work with the kind of smart outlet I mentioned here.

@ReviewedByPhil5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is important to correctly identify the wires you will be connecting to the switch. The 4 stickers will help you color code the wires in your wall, so I recommend that they are used. Once you've correctly identified those wires, it's simply a matter of matching them to the same colors on the switch. The wiring diagram that comes with the unit is actually quite good, so I would study it carefully if you're doing the installation yourself. If you don't know how to identify the load, ground, neutral, and live wires in your wall, I would not perform this installation on your own. I did not explain how to do that in the video, if that's the information you are looking for.

@@ReviewedByPhil this is actually perfect for my needs I have a closet and I need to know when the closet light is on since the switch is on the outside. And since I'm controlling it by voice all the time it doesn't matter to know if I can see the switch or not.

Good video, even though you fast forwarded the wiring. I was still able to set up my Gosund Smart Switch.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry about that, I felt showing me twisting wires together for 5 minutes wasn't interesting or informative. All my wires were labeled and color coded with the stickers, so I just matched the colors of the stickers to the color wire coming out the switch, as described in the video an din the printed instructions. I know it goes by fast, but hopefully it's a simple and straightforward enough idea that folks gets it, even if they have to re-watch that section a couple times.

What's giving you trouble? The diagram in the instructions is actually pretty spot on. You should have a live (black from your circuit breaker, black on the switch), load (black from your light fixture, red on the switch), two neutrals (white from the circuit breaker and light fixture, white on the switch), and two grounds (green/copper from breaker and light fixture, green in the switch). If your wiring lacks a ground wire either from the breaker, light fixture or both, you may be able to wire the green wire from the switch to the gang if there's a ground point/screw.

I wished you didn't fast forward through the wiring.
@ReviewedByPhil5 жыл бұрын
After all the wires are properly labeled, the only part I fast forwarded was twisting the wires together. You just match the labels together e.g. ground to ground, neutral to neutral etc. There's no specific technique, I just twist them together clockwise and then screw on the caps. If you need more time, you can slow the video playback down in the settings to half or even quarter speed. The diagram in the instructions is actually quite good at laying out the wiring plan, which I describe at 0:53. The gist of it is green is ground (generally green or bare copper in your wall), white is neutral (generally white in the wall), live is the black wire (generally black in the wall), and load is red which goes to the light fixture (generally black in the wall); I only say "generally" because everyone's wiring is different and you should never solely use the color of the sleeves of the wiring in your walls to determine polarity. Always test your lines to determine which are live, ground, and neutral before making any connections.

Are you using the Smart Life mobile app? You may need to enable this skill in the Alexa app first so that she can find devices connected to that app.

You spent like 5 seconds on the actual wiring...pointless...
@ReviewedByPhil4 жыл бұрын
Sure, but that's literally how much time it takes to set up. Once you've got the wires in the gang labeled, you just need to match the color sticker to the color wire on the switch. Label your live wire black (this one carries the current from your circuit breaker), your load wire (typically black wire going to your light fixture) red, both neutrals are white (one from your breaker and one from the fixture), both grounds are green (one from the breaker, one from the light fixture). Then all the same colored wires get connected to the corresponding color lead in the switch with the included wire nuts. That's the jist of what I said in the video. Are you having trouble identifying the wires in your wall?

Yeah your backhanded little insult doesn’t change the fact that this is a worthless video, and I might add it’s clear you don’t know how to wire up this switch or you would have shown it
@ReviewedByPhil2 жыл бұрын
Not an insult, just a suggestion if you still can't find the info you're looking for in order to be confident in wiring up a switch. I've changed enough outlets and switches in my life that this stuff seems straight forward, but I forget that it may not be so for other folks. Thanks for the reminder. Let me know if there's anything unclear about the wording I used to describe the wiring instructions provided at 1:52. Basically you need to match the colors of the tags you put on the wires to the colors of the wires on the switch and connect the ends with the included wire nuts. I also explain what the colors mean at 0:53. To dig in a little deeper, "live" means the wire that's coming from your circuit breaker that provides electrical power, also sometimes called "hot." This is the wire that is dangerous and could shock you, so it's important to know which one it is and use an electrical tester if you're not sure. "Load" refers to the lead wire that goes to the thing you're powering, in this case, the light fixtures. Neutral wires are the electrical return that's required to complete a circuit in order to allow electricity to flow in a loop; they are typically white, and you'll need to connect the neutral from your breaker box to the neutral of your light fixture (see 2:01). Ground wires are typically green or bare copper and are a safety measure to prevent shorts from overloading circuits and are connected to the earth to dissipate electricity. I thought perhaps watching someone twist on wire nuts for 4 minutes with wires that were color coded would be boring and uninformative, so I sped that process to 20 seconds while simply explaining what I was doing. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate the dialog!
