We've been covering battery fires and subsequent battery recalls for Chevrolet Bolt EVs now since late 2020 - and last year, we postulated that the recall is likely finally over.
But last week, Chevrolet told owners of 2020-2022 Bolt EVs (who have yet to get the recall carried out) that they won't be getting a battery back but instead a battery software monitoring solution that will keep an eye on the battery - and only mark a car as one that requires its battery replaced if it deems necessary.
Here's what we know - and what to do next.

I have a 2021 Bolt EV Premier that had its battery replaced at the end of March 2023 with just a little over 35,000 miles on it. Nearly 14,000 of the miles prior to replacement were put on the car in September and October of 2022 during a holiday that started in the Mid-Atlantic USA, then went to Newfoundland and across Canada to Vancouver Island and then returned to the Mid-Atlantic. I managed to do the trip with the 80% limit on the battery. That said, I'm really happy that I jumped on the replacement as soon as I got the notice, else I may have missed out on the pack replacement entirely. As a confirmed "car guy" I am disappointed that GM has essentially decided to build solely SUVs and pickup trucks and eliminate their sole EV "car" offering. As of today, I have a Lucid Air Pure on order which will probably be delivered later this year. I placed my reservation in December 2021 and then my order in August 2022, so it's been a little while but I am pretty patient when it comes to buying stuff and spending money, but I digress... Unfortunately, as of this writing, the Bolt will probably mark the end my relationship with GM unless they decide to start manufacturing cars again. I have been incredibly happy with the Bolt, which is my second favorite car to drive, just a little bit behind my Mercedes SL600.

For marketing reasons all cars will be called crossovers, even if it's really a hatchback or wagon. A few will be fastback sedans, but they'll all be a little taller like all cars used to be (like the Bolt itself is). The new small EV platform vehicles arrive in 2025, and the Bolt name may return then. You should see the Equinox EV in the flesh and then decide if it's really an SUV or just a practical car.

I may very well have had the last replacement battery in Arizona. Last Thursday my 2020 Bolt had the battery replaced. The car had 9850 miles. And of course the 8 year/100K warranty starts as of June 15, 2023. There was no windshield sticker afixed, so I suggest that owners keep records of the battery exchange. GM certainly has VIN records, but better safe than sorry. Thanks, Nikki. You guys are the standard of the industry.

Wonderful video. Here is an update (March, 2024). What if woke up one morning and GM said, "Hey, we would like to give Bolt Owners a new battery that will get over 10% more distance. And, we will refresh the warranty at 8yr/80,000 miles."? Oh, we will give you a rental loaner while the replacement occurs, and we will give you a USD$1,400 prepaid Visa gift card to say "Thank you for letting us swap out your battery." That's what happened to me. But, yes, prior to that day, I was very disheartened.

I was lucky enough to get an early '22 and have it recalled less than 2 weeks after purchase. ~2 months later they took it back under lemon law because I didn't want to deal with drama on a brand new vehicle. This final resolution confirms I made the right choice, but I do miss my Bolt sometimes. I am looking forward to the EX30 as the spicier, more modern Bolt replacement.

On my third Bolt. 1EV, 2 EUV. GM gave me the current Red Line one with a $5k check as a replacement under lemon law - due to slow battery replacement recall response. I couldn't be happier with the Bolt. Fast, essentially free to drive it, level 2 charger in garage, less than $30/month. American made. Cheaper than Tesla.

Our 2021 Bolt EV had its battery replacement several months ago. Guess we were lucky. Still love our Bolt. A thing to bear in mind. The point of this whole replacement drama was to prevent Bolts from spontaneously combusting (literally). If GM is correct about the software fix, then we should not see further fires in Bolts that have been updated. If they are wrong, we will see Bolts starting to catch fire again. However, if the former is the case and 2020 - 22 Bolts continue to not have fires, then there's no reason why their battery packs need to be replaced. I should think GM owes something to Bolt owners who face restricted charging for their next 6000 miles, though it's not necessarily a whole new battery.

Update: Despite the fact that the dealer said they saw the open recall and that it would take 3 weeks for the parts to come in, when I arrived at the dealership, they said there was no battery, and they would instead be doing the software update. Very disappointing after driving on essentially 60% of a battery for over 2 years that there was zero compensation for my inconvenience.

I have a 2020 without the battery replaced. I was perfectly happy waiting for a replacement hoping to maximize the life of the original battery and extend the warranty period on the replacement. But I understood that that gm could find a different solution. I'm ok with this news because it's a win for the environment. Fewer obsolete batteries will need to be produced. I'm disappointed that gm is not making owners whole for the reduced functionality of the vehicles.

Hi Nikki, great episode! GM bought out the lease on our 2020 Bolt LT that was under the recall in April of '22 and replaced it with a 2022 Bolt 2LT that had the battery replacement already and a new 3 year lease. During this time of year I regularly achieve 4.3 mi./kW and the expecto-meter claims 280 miles on a full charge. It might help I run my tires at 40psi. I just had a software update done under recall but they didn't say anything about the update altering how the update would affect my range. So far it hasn't. Also did the seat belt recall while I was at it. I just got a notice from the dealer where I had leased the 2020 Bolt and they say they are ready to complete the traction battery recall. Someone forgot to tell them GM took it over 14 months ago, I suppose? I imagine they will not be replacing the battery, but instead just tweaking the software. If I get a notice for the software update you mentioned that alters the charge capability, I think I'll just play dumb and ignore it. I happen to like having 280 miles of range.

One wonders how many original packs were taken and tested to failure... or not failure by GM. would be interesting to find that data. I'm quite sure they tested the hell out of them, and probably discovered a far lower failure rate and built a database of data points on what precursors predict a failure. Still as an owner I'd be pissed I wouldn't be getting a new pack knowing I had to drive 6K miles in the penalty box for what could be no reason without any due compensation. I small a class action suit.

I have a 2020 Bolt EV that has the software you described. I'm still waiting for the 6, 200 miles to expire, since I don't drive the car a whole lot. I talked with the technician when he installed this software un july 2023, and he explained that if it finds a concern it will display on the screen, and the car will continue to run (I was worried about the car stopping dead in the middle of nowhere). I'm not really clear about what happens if no concerns are found after 6,200 miles - yes, the 80% restriction should disappear, but I don't believe there'll be any indication on the screen that the battery has successfully passed the period. So every once in a while I try to set the charge limit to 90%, and it falls back to 80%. Still waiting to drive another 1K miles for the software to make its final judgement.

re: "Driving in fear of spontaneously combusting is terrible." now remember kids the problem is NOT the fire, no, the problem is that you have "no talent" BEFORE THE FIRE other than to let it burn itself out (yes this coming to this realization is unpleasant) while hopefully keeping it contained and away from other structures and property. examine it close and you'll see the "Fire Science" of dealing with Lion batteries, isn't much different than what's used in fighting the annual Wild Fires in the West (yeah good luck in willfully forgetting about those ones) and is what's being used to fight the 12 Million Acre "conflagration" currently happening up in Canada, eh...?

Just bought one three days ago. I knew that it was a buy back from GM. On the sheet, it says that the status is closed. It has not gone the 6200 miles though. The under writers for my insurance would not touch this with a "ten foot pole". I got Progressive to insure it. Drove the car 110 miles from the dealer and the car is great. I am replacing a Chevrolet Spark EV so the range is not reduced but I gained a 125 miles. At least, I got a "smokin" deal on. a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt Premier with 16,000 miles. Loved the Spark, but this Bolt is the real deal.

I have a 2020 Bolt and have so far refused the software updates, so I still have access to the full range of the car. The vast majority of the time, I charge the car to only 65%, which is more than sufficient for driving around town. On those occasions I do need to charge beyond 80%, I use the car's "delayed charging" feature so that the battery spends as little time over 80% as possible, completing the charge within half an hour or so of me hopping in and driving it, and if the particular trip I'm about to do only requires charging to 90% rather than 100%, then the car gets charged only to 90. I have never encountered any issues with the car, and even on the occasions where it was charged to 100%, there have never been any fires or anything. I have also, thus far, refused to take the car to the dealer even for the seatbelt recall, out of fear that once the car was in the dealer's hands, they would install the 80% limiting software update while it was there, without my permission. In light of the latest news announced in this video, I may choose to go ahead and get the software update installed after all, as driving 6200 miles with an 80% limitation is not nearly as bad as living with an 80% limitation indefinitely. Also, as the owner, I get the luxury of choosing the timing of the update to minimize the impact. For example, I can choose to get the update installed right after a planned long road trip, rather than right before. By the way, does anybody know is the software update that limits your charge to 80% also reduces your charging speed in the "meat" of the charging curve below 50%? My understanding is that it makes DC charging very slow from 75% to 80%, but I also never DC charge above 65% anyway, so that's not a concern. But, giving up the 50 kW at 20%, that would be a huge annoyance.

I've heard that the 2020 battery will be replaced eventually but I don't know if that is true. The biggest little thing that is annoying is the range estimator. That seems pretty strange sometimes and varies as you go down the road. Overall, I am happy with it. I have been getting used to the one pedal system and I like it. Don

We've been on the range reduced "safety update" for a year or so, we now have to get another update that will return the full range in another 6200 miles. For us, this will be two years plus on a car that only has about 80% of the promised range. It hasn't affected us too much except when we travel to Portland. Not sure if this will keep me from buying GM in the future but it doesn't help their sales case.

I used to own a 2020 Bolt. Loved driving it. Then GM had one 2020 burn and added 2020-2022s as a second battery recall. Once the lawyers came with all the don't do this or else's, and GM said 2019 first, then 2017-18, then the rest, I was mistrustful of GM and could see I'd be at least #75000+1 b4 mine got done (years out), IF GM had the integrity to finish what they started. My Bolt was no longer what I purchased. Thankfully, I succeeded in getting a buy back. Had I waited for the recall and got the Concierge call last week, NONPLUSSED would be a gross understatement of my reaction. GM understands how to kill brand loyalty, through repetitive doing. Even IF they weren't running on 'Elon time' with every one of the Ultium based EV products, I will NOT even consider them again. Customer loyalty paid back with NOTHING, other than ensuring their short term profitability. 🤬

Thank you for the great information. I have a 2020 Bolt and have been waiting patiently for the new battery as promised. I found out the news this wasn’t going to happen by reading about it. I was never informed by GM or my dealership. I am beyond disappointed and furious now. To get this new software installed and be limited to 80% for 6200 miles would be a big hardship for me as I often need almost the whole charge. I have reached out to GM and haven’t heard back yet. I was so happy to have an electric car that I love and to be an advocate for EVs and Bolts in particular. But I am so disillusioned with the company now. I’m not comfortable sticking with a car that may burst into flames, but don’t want to get the software. I also use the car to transport my mom who had a stroke and it’s the only vehicle she feels ok to transfer to and from her wheelchair. I’m not sure what my solution, but it appears it will involve me having to spend money that I hadn’t budgeted for. My partner is on the list for the Chevy electric truck and will cancel if GM won’t do anything for me. I will certainly be telling people to not trust GM. 😢

If you have a 2020 Bolt with the original battery, you should already have the software update that permanently limits you to 80% max charge for safety reasons. (If you don't have this update yet and your 2020 can charge to 100% on an original battery, you're driving a potential fire hazard!) The new update changes it from a permanent 80% cap to a temporary 80% cap that unlocks after 6200 miles. So I don't see how that's worse than before unless I'm missing something. And yes I agree this news is disappointing since a brand new battery would be better and since GM had previously indicated everyone would be getting one, but it's also not like they're making your car worse than before.

Every vehicle ever is a potential fire hazard. The original "80%" software was *optional*. It was a voluntary recall, not a mandatory one. Only a few cars burned, ever. That points to an isolated manufacturing defect, proven out by GM slow walking, then modifying, the recall. I choose not to raise my concern level as high as other's. You are not alone in your choice by any means.

One month ago in August 2023 I purchased a 2021 bolt EV premier with 18k… It already had the restrictive software installed and was in a “diagnostic mode”… Fast forward three weeks later… When I started the car I had a reduced propulsion warning, a service ASAP warning and was not able to charge beyond 30%. Long story short I took the car in…they have ordered me a new battery which they said will take 6 to 8 days and another 3-4 days for a technician and are replacing it under warranty. Well it is a little disappointing to get a new vehicle and have to immediately put it in the shop for a couple of weeks I’m still very excited to be receiving a new battery… It’s almost like I will be getting a brand new car.

Need help from the experts. My bolt ev is 2022. It was brand new and I drove it for more than 42k km. Last week i went to dealership for my servicing for the first time. They did tire rotation and software update and a recall. Software update is not for recall purpose..they did the software update as a routine service check..and it's "Advanced Diagnostic Software (ADS) Improvements" - "Hybrid Powertrain Control Module 2 Reprogram" The recall was for "Seatbelt Pretensioner Fire" Since i have come from the dealership I am getting only 360km-373km per full charge. But I used to get at least 420km per full charge even though I have changed my tires after i had a flat tire from factory tires. With factory tires i used to get well over 460km per full charge. From my energy consumption screen it seems like its not using the full 66kWh battery. Its using somewhere 59kWh or less. Its summer here so the temp is well over 18c to 32c. I know the km range depends on driving habits and other conditions..I drove it for 42k km since I bought it and always used to get excellent mileage when the temp is optimal. And I used to have AC all the time when it was hot out there. So there isn't anything that I did new. But all of a sudden this sharp decrease of the mileage. Could anyone please tell me what could be wrong? Tried to call service center and they said they don't have any idea why this is happening!!! Please help.. thanks in advance

Excellent video. Question: I bought a 2022 Bolt EV that arrived at the dealer on about 6/23/2022. Yesterday it began displaying the warning: "Propulsion Power Reduced". The Bolt EV Forum users think it is either a bad battery or a bad coolant pump, possibly for the transmission. More of them had a battery replaced. But my Bolt was manufactured in 2022. I think it is possible it has one of the faulty older version batteries in it. If so, Chevy should replace it so I get what I paid for, including a 66 kw version. Any thoughts or information? Thank you, Rob

Have a 2020 Bolt. Finally got the liner and seatbelt recalls done, last week. Have 8000 miles on it. Usually, keep it charged between 50-80%. Don't have home charging. So charge it on EVgo while shopping at Whole Foods. And it's within the shopping time frame (along with a coffee). For my use case, it's fine. With the new software update, I just hope it works, as the service manager stated. As long as my Bolt doesn't spontaneously burst into flames, I'm fine. It's mainly a local utility car for me.

As a 2020 bolt premier ev owner this is unfortunate. have had it for over 3 yrs now Funny thing is that's the dealership had called me previously To come in and have the battery swap done. But by the time the appointment came that day, they told me oops, no battery for you. You get a software update instead. So, I've had about 3 of those done I think. Most recent one was a couple weeks ago. And then this week I get a fault. Killy me. There's an issue with the lithium battery and to have it serviced. Immediately and at my speed for propulsion, has been reduced. So I guess I'll find out. Is there going to replace it or if there are what the actual issue is

I saw a 20% jncrease in usable capacity between my original Bolt battery, which had close to 10% range reduction in 77k miles, to the new battery - if you charge both to 100%. I usually stop at 88%, which covers way more than 90% of our use case. I think we measured 52.9 kwh on the original battery and 64.3 on the new one. That’s about 40 miles in added capacity in the summer months.

A: you're screwed. see like i told you guys in the TEN comments 2 weeks ago "Boycott GM" cause GM has now "crawled into bed with Elon". so naturally with the state of 'Murican consumers being naive AF and gullible AF (and you are) this forces you to believe this partnership between entities like Ford and Tesla and GM is Tesla is all "sunshine and roses" and limited to the mere "adoption" of the NACS connector...? no, what these partnerships actually mean is the "adoption" of a LARGER STRATEGY OF F*%KING YOU OVER which is what Elon does to his customers, so unbeknownst what you've now given is a "green light" to both Ford and GM to start F*%KING YOU OVER (which is exactly what's happening).

I'm glad now that I got noisy. We have a 2020 Bolt and we did get our replacement battery. I'd be furious with this, and I think this would have me exploring a buyback if I had to settle for this. I love the car, but GM's continued contempt of customer attitude continues to be their downfall. Our Bolt is our last GM product already due to the Android Auto/Apple Car Play decision. Absent that, this would be a walk away from the company as well, just like Nissan. One question I have though, what does this mean for their ultium packs given that this is also a LG Chem partnership? Who has controlling interest of this design?

Q: One question I have though, what does this mean for their ultium packs given that this is also a LG Chem partnership? A: well if you listen to GM tell it, it's FULL STEAM AHEAD on the Ultium kit (that is until it isn't). and if you watched last Saturday's TEN you would've heard Nikki mention GM confirming their 4th Battery Plant in Indiana is to be built with Samsung SDI so make of that what you will... same as LG Samsung is a South Korean entity, and as we've witnessed all Lion batteries (even cylindrical one's made in the collaboration between Japanese Panasonic and 'Murican Tesla) are subject to fire and burning. the problem is "endemic" to NMC CHEMISTRY and cannot be "usurped" by any talent possessed by a particular form factor or by a nation of people. no, the only choice is to use a LESS VOLATILE chemistry (ref: LFP) and to then pull one's head out and ACCEPT the tradeoffs of INCREASED weight and LESS power density. because: NO FREE LUNCH.

Does you know for sure how the battery warranty works under the recall battery rules? ( for example if say a 2019 Bolt LT has 50K odometer miles when the new battery is installed under the new recall rules): does the new battery come with a warranty only as good as the original odometer or does it get it's own warranty that is separate? which of course would be weird because battery's don't have built in odometers , so how could the new battery get a warranty time frame that exceeds the odometer miles? Important to note: Getting the original "80%" software was *optional*. I chose never to have it installed on my 2021. I may continue to exercise that choice on the new "80% for 6000+ miles" software. I made this choice because the initial reports simply ... stopped. The expanded recall was voluntary by GM, not mandatory by NHTSA, as I recall (pun intended). An overabundance of caution is exactly that. I choose not to be afraid of my car. Every car could harbor an unknown problem every second of every day. If this known problem had ever manifested more than a handful of times, and NHTSA or other organizations got involved, I might feel differently. At this moment, the likelihood of the known problem manifesting seems just as low as some new unknown problem manifesting. I drive and park (even in parking garages!) with a normal feeling of safety. To each their own.

Follow-up: I got the "80% for 6200 miles" software installed. I timed it to just after a 1400 mile trip, and believe it'll run its course just before the lease is up. Why did I decide to do it? I'll probably buy the car (or sell it!) and I wanted to know it had a good battery before lease end. My usual uses aren't really impacted and I rarely charge over 80% in the Fall and Winter anyway. I'm a good test subject and I'm willing to try it.

There’s a theory that Bolt which had a bad battery did burn or had the battery swap (which would explain why we haven’t seen new case of battery fire). Still, again, GM has no transparency. The 2020-2022 will lose more value than the 2017-2019 who got a new battery (totally non-sense). Also, no compensation for the annoyance of having a car stuck at 80% during 10000km (and what about those who got the 80% restriction since 2021?), no warranty reset while the 2017-2019 have a new full warranty. Another question to ask is can a software really detect a hardware problem of this kind? It won’t fully remove any concern and if I was a 2020-2022 Bolt owner, I would right away sell my Bolt (but I’m lucky, I have a 2017 with a new battery).

Q: Another question to ask is can a software really detect a hardware problem of this kind? I had a 2020 Bolt and I did receive a recall notice, but was told that a replacement was not available at the time. I was also instructed not to park indoors, do not charge above 80% and do not go below 70 miles of range (much different than the 10% stated here). After nearly a year living with the restricted range and worry of fire, the Bolt was traded in on an MME. Even 6 months later, it appeared the battery had never been replaced, but I've never been happier... to be rid of a car. Because of the battery problem, recall that never happened, and that is was such a terrible car, I assumed I would not be able to sell the pig. I feel like I've won the lottery to have dumped a terrible car and got my full purchase price plus, all just days before GM dropped many thousands off the list price of the car. I can see why GM was dropping prices while everyone else was raising them. I cannot recommend the car for any use.

GM software in general is trash so trusting a software solution by them is a big ask. Assuming it actually works, I'm not inherently against preventing the waste of perfectly good batteries, but owners that have dealt with a significantly crippled vehicle for two years on the promise of a new battery should be compensated with an extended warranty at the least, and probably things like free onstar and charging credit. A buyback should also be offered but that in itself is still a big hassle, and if you take it there are no equivalent vehicles available anymore, especially for a similar price.

@@shanefiddle re: "I like this option." i'm sure you do (we all do). but sadly "liking something" is just not the how the ADULT WORLD works. in the adult world, the only thing "like something" is good for is WIPING YOUR ASS. let me explain: i would have "liked" for there to have been no GLOBAL PANDEMIC (but that's not what happened). i would have "liked" for there to be NO WW3 IN UKRAINE (but that's not what happened). i would have "liked" for there to be NO CANADIAN WILD FIRES WITH SMOKE BLOWING "CHUNKS" ALL THE WAY DOWN THE EAST COAST (but again, that's not what happened).
