Chevy's new Bolt EUV may not turn any heads when you're driving down the road, but it looks like it could be a good fit for most people... depending on your budget. There's a lot of competition in the EV space now, does the Bolt stand out?

This is the sort of car I'm excited for. Nice and basic, it'll come down in price on the second hand market (eventually), it's a good sign that EVs are still moving into the non-luxury market. Solid review. Thanks Alex.

I bought a Bolt EUV, partially because of videos like yours, people are not rushing to buy them, so I got a good deal. The car itself is great, particularly the headlights, and the auto dim/bright feature. The car is quiet, comfortable, and I've taken it on a 400 mile road trip, no problems. The car looks like what it looks like, so I never understand criticism about how a car looks. The car is VERY quick. I went up the infamous "Grapevine" Tehon pass over the mountains north of Los Angeles going UPHILL, a 6% grade for six miles, at 85 MPH, passing every other car. So I don't get al;l the negative stuff, but I presume you realized what a great car the Bolt EUV most drivers. I put a set of Michelin "Cross Climate" tires on it, they are winter tires, ice rated. If you take the time to go into the settings, you can turn off the beep when the car self locks, or turn off the self locking feature. I'm glad you discovered you can adjust the sound system, go in and adjust the settings to punch or diminish the treble/bass, etc. Also, you're testing the Premier, top trim level, so the price is very good for a premium trim car with EVERY feature, including the self driving that actually WORKS !! So I'm glad you decided the car was "worthy" of your consideration. Enjoy !!

One thing I'd really like to see in car reviews like this because I think it can inspire positive change is discussion of the turn signals. The new Blot EV and EUV ditched the amber rear turn signals of the previous model in favor of brake lights that double as turn signals, which studies have repeatedly shown is less safe. I know that's not the kind of flashy, exciting thing you usually cover in these reviews, but I feel like awareness of this practice could help make it less common.

The Civic SI is sooooo slow. I used to have an ES350 as a DD and I could take them to gapplebees, it was so funny watching them trying to row gears and their baby engine couldn't muster enough to even keep up with a regular ol' 6-cylinder sedan. That being said, the Bolt is also super slow. It just feels quick because of the instantaneous torque, but the 0-60 and quarter mile belie the feeling you get.

This probably plays right into my confirmation bias but I'm so happy to see Alex happy about this car! I got my 2022 Bolt LT at the beginning of October (2022) and it's been a great car so far! I totally agree that all their models should come with at least adaptive cruise control which would've been nice, but the normal cruise as it is is actually pretty good. It keeps great speed and has near instant response to changes if you need to fiddle. I definitely enjoy it being more of a "car" than a "computer on wheels" that other EVs seem to go for in terms of looks. It just feels like it was designed by someone who ACTUALLY uses a car every day. I can't say the same for everybody, but pricing was actually pretty good for me. Looking around I think I managed to get mine pre-markups, but the dealership I bought it at had a manufacture's rebate which put sticker price around $36K (USD). I chose to put a down-payment so managed an out the door price of around $31K (USD). Still the most I've ever paid for a car, but that price to get into my first ever EV was awesome! Especially considering the state of the car market right now. I just really hope the Bolt is a huge success as I think it absolutely has the potential to show other manufacture's that they can make less-luxury style EVs that anyone would be willing to consider as their next purchase.

@@mcslender2965 At the moment I only have Level 1 (or standard 110V) charging at home. An average week is about 70 miles total of driving so the 3-4 miles/hr of charging provided is actually more than plenty for me as I drive throughout the week and charge during the weekend. For the time being it's perfectly fine. The only downside is that if you come back from a longish trip it will take several days to get the car charged back up to a "normal" level (for me I top mine at 80%), but it's certainly still usable by all means. Although I am looking into upgrade options. If you're looking for a great breakdown of charging I highly recommend you check out Technology Connection's Complete Guide to EVs. This is the first of ShortCircuit's car videos I've seen, and it's quite impressive. Alex's fluency with cars makes this a joy to watch and extremely educational. I saw another video on this particular car and am intrigued. One thing, though, I'm a bit puzzled by the comparison to the Honda Civic concerning adaptive cruise. Isn't the main reason the price point on the Bolt is so much higher that it's an EV? Adaptive cruise seems incidental. I assumed the 2023 Civic must be an EV as well given how the comparison was presented in this video, and was pretty excited about that $24k USD starting price point. I had to look it up (not being observant enough to see the 2.0L for the engine in the image within the video, though, as someone not that well-versed in gas engines, I guess it's not too surprising I'd miss that without more thought) and since it's not I don't know if that's a really compelling comparison. Now I'm left kind of confused about whether or not this is a good price for adaptive cruise. But I'm a major beginner in such things, so that could be more the problem here.

I'm definitely considering a Bolt. I've been without a car for over a year as I blew the turbo on my WRX and the price of parts vs. what a mechanic wanted to fix it made it a no brainer to fix myself, as long as I could get by without having my own car, which it turns out I can. I've been getting by just fine using my motorcycle for daily transportation with only 3 days in the past year that I needed a car a the same time my wife was using hers, so I think that an EV will work for me just fine, and I've come to realize I don't need WRX performance in a car (I like it, but I don't need it) and I'm willing to trade off for reduced maintenance. Besides, I still have the bike if I want "exhilarating."
@hudsonhollow

As a lifelong mechanic, I choose the simplest cars that I expect to have to maintain the least. As an around town car, I think the Bolt may be the best available at this time. As long as you don't get it stuck in park, it should be many miles between problems, and it's generally the driver's fault if you get stuck in park and can't get it out on your own. I plan to order one next Spring for my wife to drive around town. I never plan on driving it across country or charging anywhere but my garage. Just good, reliable run around car. The simpler the better. I will choose the base model as stripped of goofy, useless crap as a car can be today. My current go to car is a 2001 Cherokee. I mainly want to get my wife an around town car so I can put less miles on the Cherokee and keep it forever. Indestructible.

I leased a Bolt EV in premier trim in June of 2021 for ~$200USD/month with only taxes down. I have to say for the price I paid, I couldn’t be happier. Nobody paid full price for one of these things before the vehicle shortage, and I feel we’re going to be back to seeing heavy rebates soon. It’s quick, quiet and smooth - the tech is great including the rear camera mirror. I also think it’s WAY more fun to drive than any compact I’ve been in before - good enough to get me to hand in the keys to a Cadillac CTS. And with a bright blue metallic paint job - I think it’s not quite as boring of a total package as the dark grey.

we had 3 Chevy Volts. We decided to test drive a used 2017 Bolt, and loved it - sold a Volt, bought the used Bolt. Then bought a new 2021 Bolt when they had $14500 incentive. 2017 has had the battery replacement, so has more warranty left than the the 2021 at the moment :D Chevy listened to Volt owners, re those physical buttons for climate. as well as lots of other little things. Would totally buy an EUV, but I'm waiting for a cheap Ultium platform based Chevy. Snow tires are awesome on these cars, sticks em to the road in the winter. Great car. Haha - I'm 72 yo and retired and just bought a 22 Bolt EV 2LT 3 months ago. I've always driven "cool" cars like 87 300ZX, 93 RX7 Twin Turbo, and my 2006 SLK350 drop top convertible that I've driven for the past 14 years. My daughter was shocked to see me driving a "non-cool" car like the Bolt, but I don't care. Yes, I still own the Benz and not selling it, but this Bolt is the most fun I have ever had in a car. It's so funny when people try to out run you from a traffic light, and you just play with them before leaving them behind. Reminds me of when I was a teen and we put a 283 Chevy V8 engine in an Austin Healey and would run off and leave Corvettes and other fast cars. Great review, but I must add that the Bolt does NOT handle like my Benz in curves, but that's okay with me too. Thanks for the review and I agree with all you said (save handling).

I'm really curious about the sound system. It is very similar to the Bose sound system in my Kia Sorento... except that mine has almost no bass. The stock system on my 2005 Sorento sounded better than it does. I had to boost the bass as high as it will go, and lower mids and highs otherwise it sounds annoyingly tinny. Maybe different manufacturers are tweaking the Bose settings behind the scenes, or maybe Kia is just pairing it with very low quality speakers? (Note: Kia used to use Harmon international speakers, which sounded absolutely amazing, so I think they switched to Bose for the noise cancellation tech.)

@@username8644 Recalls are all fine and well for getting the car fixed, but if you are like me and don't have a lot of time off and require a car to get to work it is very inconvenient to get the work done. The last time I had to get a recall done was on my 2013 chevy spark, it took 2 attempts for the dealer to get the proper part to fix the defect as well as a previous inspection to verify that the car was part of the recall because vin alone was apparently not sufficient. Again, not the end of the world but this was super time consuming and all so that my car would work as it should have when I bought it with no compensation for my time and not even a loner car it makes me hesitant to buy an car likely to need a recall. Add to that the bolt had a long time that owners could not really use the car for fear of fire until chevy got them new batteries and I can see why many people would be afraid to buy one even if the price is good, with as competitive as the Hyundai is it would not surprise me if when supply starts to reach demand chevy has trouble selling their bolts.

That makes the Bolt EUV about $2,500 less than the Civic with a fair bit more going on for it. If you can live with electric in your life, then this model makes so much sense. Good car review focused on the car instead of the tech and entertaining to watch also, I've seen a real improvement from the previous car reviews, more about the car and its practicality which is excellent, also nice to see that the car wasn't taken to a track to race round the track and was tested in a real-world experience, I felt like this told me enough about the car to make me interested in the car but not over the top, really good review. One little criticism is the way in which the corners were taken when pulling off the road to go up that side hill, I'm not sure if Canada is like America in that you barely have any corners but there was some serious corner-cutting going on, maybe drive a little slower and follow the corners to demonstrate the handling a little better. overall though, very good review I look forward to seeing more, if not for educational purposes at least entertainment purposes, being interested in cars sometimes it's nice to just learn about a car, Oh another little pointer that could do with a slight tweak at least from my perspective, is when discussing the design of the car a slightly wider show maybe a touch better, rather than close with a slightly off angle, more of a shot you would expect when looking at the car from your own perspective, or maybe not, the bit about the design of the rear quarter panel just felt slightly strange.

Have done just over 11500 miles so far, and have spent less than $400 to do it. Even with a new car note, I'm STILL saving money each month. Seats are not the most comfy long term, it isn't the fastest DC charging, so maybe not the best cross country vehicle. But by in large, I can not say enough good things about this vehicle.
