Really appreciate your awareness of the danger of dust. A good friend of mine retired from where we worked and looked forward to happy years of making furniture and things in a big shop he'd built and stocked with all sorts of woodworking tools. But 3 years later he was dead, from inhaling wood dust particles that caused pulmonary fibrosis. Silica particles are even worse, from what I've heard, so thanks for bringing this up. If only grinder manufacturers would make it a bit easier to do the cleaning though! Carrying a grinder from the work table somewhere to drain it can be tricky, with water sloshing around in such a shallow basin. If they'd put a drain tube with shutoff valve somewhere, it would make things a lot less messy. Another note: Years ago I taught a beginners' stained glass class at a local church school and of course with a dozen students using the same grinder it got gunked up quickly. The students in the next room were making pottery, and they used to come over and scrape out the muddy sludge from our grinder to experiment with as glazes for their jugs and bowls and things. It generally fired to a gray or brown color but if it happened that my students used a lot of one particular color glass, the pots would sometimes come out with streaks of that color. It was a great learning experience for all of us!

Wow! It’s surprising the glass slurry can be re-used for something else ! Thanks again for all your support for the channel 🙂

While I do clean my grinder reservoir often and while wet, I use a flat putty knife to scrape most of the build-up into a rubbish tin. I feel that washing the residue down the drains will block them eventually. Maybe not, but just something to keep in mind.

That is good to know! Ive heard people say you should clean your grinder, but never how or why. Thanks for answering both questions!

Derek: being a reformed potter, who routinely followed glaze recipes using raw ingredients,, I've wondered about collecting the grindings for use in ceramic glaze. have you run across this? regards. thank you for all that you do.

Yes, other glass folk have mentioned using it with moulds to slump kiln formed shapes. 👍🏼

I agree with the comment below - I scrape mine into a container for rubbish bin disposal, as I don't want that glass sludge down my drain. I also position my grinder on my sink when using which minimises sloshing water when moving the grinder to clean it,

@@marian.day61 yes, its better to remove large amounts of sludge and put it in a bag, rather than put too much in the sink

That stuff should never go down your drain. Even rinsing is bad for the pipes

I just use my stone..

Yup, that’ll work too! But sometimes the grinder can get into curved shapes a bit better 👍🏼

Stop forcing subtitles on people. There is a built in system in KZbin for you to put them in for people to _choose_ to use them.
