Wow!!! I have been considering asking you to do a video on foiling ripple glass. You use so much of it all the time. I used some at Christmas time and I did another piece today and I have some glass that is a really deep ripple and I was wondering how I was ever going to use it since even foiling the lighter ripple is a trip. This video started like three minutes ago and I am already blown away. I am so glad this is the video that popped up tonight! Wow. I just really appreciate what you are doing for the rest of us in showing us so much. Namaste girl. You rock.

Hey Makenzie I’m making sun catchers to sell now and I can’t figure out how to charge for use of flux & glass oil. Also how much add in cost for cuts made from Taurus saw? I’ve got all my other charges figured out but I’m stumped with these few things. Know you’re a busy lady and hate to ask but I’ve searched high and low for info without luck. A shop is ready to take my pieces and this issue is the only thing keeping them on my work table.

Thank you for this information! I have a question and want to make sure you know that this is legit and not snarky! When you put a hole in the glass I was amazed! But I wondered why you didn't have a safety shield on top of your grinder (or on the sides). I know you said at the beginning you were going to make a case for grinding (out of the plastic bin), so am not sure if that is the answer? I loved the hole - and I even have a bit to do this that my husband bought!!, but the piece flying out scared me a bit (I'm rediscovering stained glass after 20+ years and was a newbie then too). TY!!
@MakenzieHallie
@MakenzieHallie 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam! Glad your enjoying my channel! No matter what glass will be flying everywhere, there isn't a solid piece that flies out of the hole, as it's grinding the glass away. Just like grinding away anything else, an edge or hole, if that makes sense. So how you want to address that normal mess is totally up to you. There is something called Mr splash, that I review in my recent 2 part video, testing Amazon products. I know this video is old, but I will absolutely still be showing the grinder bin I referenced. It's a storage bin, with a lid, stick grinder inside, cut hole for plug, and it catches "MOST" of the glass shards. As for a shield, like my convertible grinder has built in, it realistically doesn't do anything. Safety glasses and a good clean up plan is the basic idea. There aren't deadly shards flying off and hitting your body like shrapnel! Just small glass shards that do need to be cleaned up thoroughly is all! Especially if pets/kids have access to this area! Hope this helps!

@@MakenzieHallie Wow!! Thanks for the quick reply! I haven’t used the grinder in quite awhile, but it’s had A LOT of use! I found that when I turned it on, the shaft wouldn’t rotate. If I gave it a couple of manual spins, it would spin. Now, even after lubricating the shaft, it won’t spin AT ALL. Rats!!! I’m seeing Glastar went out of business (???) Looks like it’s time for a new grinder. What do you currently use/recommend? Thanks!!

However I am baffled as to how to set up the ripple bit on my grinder (it doesn’t sink into the hole surrounding the grinder motor shaft) and I am not sure how to use the bit correctly. what is the safest grinding bit for luminescent glass and mirror glass? I am a beginner and am in the process of making a box. So I am not necessarily concerned about speed. I am just annoyed it keeps chipping! :'(
@MakenzieHallie
@MakenzieHallie 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! SO, sometimes the glass if its luminescent or iridescent is just too soft to handle really any bit, without minor chipping. So the best option is to just get a soft or slow speed bit and be very gentle. Don't push super hard into the grinder and make sure everything is sufficiently wet! I wish I had a better answer, but there is no magic bit as of now. lol !! So sorry this response took so long, i'm going through pages of comments youtube never notified me of!!! I’ve recently purchased a “second deck” for my 1/4 in diamond bit. It comes with an L shaped sponge. Have you any information on how to use these items?
@MakenzieHallie
@MakenzieHallie 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! I do not actually use hole bits with a standard bit on at the same time. But as far as a sponge, L shaped or not its not going to do much unless your holding it up against that hole bit and continuously re soaking it! I find normal sponges don't wet standard bits as well as they should on there own, so I would ditch it for the hole bit and and use your hands to hold and visually ensure that bit is staying wet!

This might be a silly question: does it matter what type of sponge that you use? Also, is coolant necessary or does water suffice?
@MakenzieHallie
@MakenzieHallie 3 жыл бұрын
Not a silly question! Technically no, it does not matter. But you'll find over time that you will prefer certain sponges over others, but thats just preference. I buy soldering sponges and once I've used them up enough, cut it up and use it to grind. So it's tall enough to cover the whole bit. Coolant is also largely preference, I do not use it but if I had a machine I felt needed the extra cooling help, then I would!

Best to use brass bits as they will not rust. A lot of the so called stainless steel bits are only stainless steel on the outside of the bit and not on the inside where it's most important. These cheaper bits can become fused to your arbor and the your grinder is done!
