His father's advice was "Walk away from trouble if you can" just so happens this was one you don't walk away from. You don't have to fight to be a man but some times you got to fight when you're a man. There are no contradictions.

@@gk5891 Right the lesson from the dad was right. Tommy just took the lesson from the dad farther than his dad said. Do not walk away all times but most of the time. Sometimes you have to fight. That corresponds to what his dad said.

I love that this song shows that the two ideas of "you don't have to fight TO BE a man" and "sometimes you have to fight when you ARE a man" are not mutually exclusive. I think the best response to this I ever heard was "he always turned the other cheek until it wasn't his cheek to turn"

@GrannyBoots the still brings me to tears also. This song came out when I was dealing with a lot of things in my life. I'm a HUGE Kenny Rogers fan ever since he came into the music scene. I TRULY do love the message of this song. Sad to say, it was still a lot of stigma in our society when it comes to rape and sexual assault. Another thing that I learned later on that people don't realize about this subject is why it happens. There less of a part to it that has to do with sex. Rape and sexual assault ISN'T REALLY about sex for the most part. IT IS however~about imposing your will upon somebody else AND controlling them. The statistics are now that one person will get assaulted in every 6 seconds. People have the perception that if you have a lot of skills that YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO fight somebody off. THAT'S not always the truth~IF they get the jump on you. I AM someone who used to box and the underground circuit on Long Island & NYC when I was much younger AND I did Krav Maga. The first 3 seconds of any encounter will make OR break it. In a lot of cases I have learned that this decides whether you survive OR NOT. People really don't realize or maybe they don't want to understand it? But depending on the situation~even people who ARE normally tough fighters CAN get taken down by others. #RapeSurvivor

@@christinegelabert1651 😓....this breaks my heart Miss Christine. Ive been shocked and deeply saddened to discover the increase in assault rate on the younger generation (i have daughters). You are absolutely right - it has zero to with sex and everything to do with imposing your will upon another... even further - destroying an element of purity and innocence within the soul of a human being. Anyone capable of such a violation is soul-less imho...perhaps wanting to destroy something they dont have (?). I have never personally experienced this, but "someone" near and dear to me has, and it cost her the life of her unborn daughter at 24 weeks...she lived only 2 days 😓. NO ONE should EVER express an opinion on what someone "should have done" in a situation they've never experienced....period. i hope you are healing Miss Christine. Never forget, The BigBoss☝ can transform any situation and utilize it for benefit others....you may be meant to help other young women who've endured what you have and help them heal as well. Never underestimate anyone at any time. There are reasons why people are the way they are. Some look at being kind and respectful as a weakness. Tommy forgave him being ridiculed and tripped up all his life. When it came to someone else's, he unfurled his wings 🪶 and grabbed his sword 😇.

for 35 years of my life everyone considered me the nicest person, they all talked about how polite I was, how I never got into fights or trouble. Circumstances changed when my daughter was hurt, now no one raises their voice around me, and every one is polite. I did my time without regret or remorse, and when my baby girl looks at me with pride and love for doing what the courts could not it is all worth it.

You don't have to fight to be a man, but sometimes you have to fight when you're a man. It's a great message we are missing in our society. One I am trying to teach my sons. I also note that the song is ambiguous as to the Gatlin boys' fate. Not one of them was standing could mean a few things. Did any of them get back up? Cause had it been me....they might not have. How much rage did Tommy have? It's left to the imagination. Great song, great reaction!

I absolutely love what you two are doing. The music you react to is great music. I spent my teenage years in the 70s. Music brought us all together because almost every song was about being a person handling what life brought you. It is a melting pot where politics, race and everything else just goes away. Bands were interracial. The entire theme of the 70s was really about love. It was the best years of my life. So glad you are loving it too. Bless you both.❤

Kenny Rogers' lyrics are straight up electric because every song speaks to something different we've all experienced to some degree. Dads teach boys not just by the good things they do but sometimes by telling them not to make the same mistakes they've made. I have seven boys and damn I've messed a lot of things up. There's a fine balance between giving too much information and being honest about imperfection with your boys. Hopefully in the end we dads leave something positive for our boys to build on.

This song is one of the greatest. Yes, the first part is true. Fighting needless fights doesn't make you a man (or hell, a woman for that matter) because fighting to prove yourself will land you in trouble. But the second part is just as a true - there are certain lines that once crossed, there's no going back and the person (persons) that crossed that line deserves to face repercussions and Tommy showed them that. Also, never make assumptions. Just because a person doesn't fight for the sake of fighting doesn't mean that won't unleash hell if pushed too far. And the one who seems the calmest is often the most dangerous.

They made a TV movie based on this song. When I was a kid, I didn't understand the "taking turns at Becky" part. I thought they just came over & slapped/beat her up. It wasn't until years later when I hear it again as an older teen that it clicked in my brain what really happened. Wait... WHAT?!?! OH HELL NO! I wanted to go kick some Gatlin boys' asses myself! OK, now you have to check out "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers... Another great story put to music. Kenny himself said it's a "great beer drinkin' sing-a-long song that everyone can join in". It's true, I first heard it as a kid & didn't really pay attention to the lyrics, but me & my friends would belt out the main chorus every time it played on the radio "You picked a fine time to..." That's all I'll say for now, so as not to give "spoilers" on what the song is about. Please check it out soon - you wont regret it, I promise.

The thing so interesting about the Bee Gees was that in their heyday people either really liked them or really didn't. As the time has gone by they have not only maintained that loyal fan base but watched it grow on its own account with the nostalgia factor; more people are listening now in an attempt to regain and re-live those days way back when. While it is sad and terrible that two of the brothers have passed away, their contribution to the great music lives on, and we'll it should. Too Much Heaven? I think not.

That's all you need.

A father's love doesn't stop at the grave. That goes for grandpas. Remember when I was little my Grandpa would fall asleep during a baseball game. He'll be sound asleep and you turn to channel He will come out of a sound sleep. Tell you to turn back he was watching that. He'll be able tell you the score , what inning and who's at bat. During high School I can fall asleep during videos and pass the quiz they have after the video. Felt good to be able to take a nap during school hours and not get in trouble.

It makes me cry because he wasn't the coward. He was the strong one for not doing stupid things, he was the strong one for being on the straight and narrow among fools. He asks for understanding from his "dad" only after he fought those guys

In Country music, there are songs of love and heartbreak and all its variations; songs of praise for God, Faith, patriotism and heroism; songs for dancing; songs that are funny and songs that offer a lesson, wisdom or philosphy. While any of these song types can be sad or stir you inside, this particular song offers a lesson. This song offers a very good and important lesson.

When I get to that part where Tommy locks the door, the first thing I think of is: "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with ME!"

Made for TV movie staring Kenny Rogers, "Coward of the County" for the background the Gatlin brothers. Simple version is Becky was the older brothers girl before he joined the army and Tommy stayed in town.

In the movie, the scene is set at World War II. The oldest Gatlin brother just came out of Boot Camp and they had harassed Tommy since kindergarten. The three brothers and their father, his uncle in the movie was a preacher. Tommy beat the living daylights out of them, but he did not kill them. They were arrested and thrown in jail. The one that was in the army was dishonorably discharged, and did time in the brick, that’s the general story of the movie

They actually made a movie based on this song in 1981. Kenny Rogers played Uncle Matthew. You should check it out. I will warn you though it is a bit hard to watch in parts. It actually takes more strength to walk away than it does to give into your instincts. As always great reaction.
