Hey Steven! I appreciated your comments on the Banana family... I am a big fan of all things Hawaii and have visited the Islands every year for the last 14 years. Each Island has something unique and magical. My banana story starts here in Oregon, I have been growing them for many years and Some years they have amazingly done well. My first plant was a gift from an employer in 1999... So while I have separated my Ohana "bananas" a few times to "gift" plants for the most part they are in groves! Aloha!!

I still have garlic growing and won't harvest for about a month. Glad your farm is doing fantastically. My garlic is probably Gilroy as I got it out of the supermarket (Safeway) produce bin at 60 cents a bulb for big fat bulbs.

Now that is a frugal way of sourcing your garlic starts! I have to admit, this harvest was pretty good, but last year not so much. Prior to this year our best harvest was from store bought garlic on clearance! 😉

Glad to see that garlic! I missed the window to plant some this year. The good news is that the Yaupon Hollies are looking good and I will be able to start harvesting leaves off of them next year for tea. I figure that I'll give them time to settle in before I worry about harvesting that delicious caffeine source! Then it's just a matter of trying to determine what part of the year is good for harvesting and how it might impact the flavor of the tea. I want to think that spring would be best since that's when the shrubs are really putting energy into growth, but maybe that's exactly when the caffeine content will be the lowest? I don't know, but it'll be fun to experiment with! And, I'll make sure to plant some garlic alongside my Allium cernuum so I have both garlic and onion aplenty!

Long term we store them inside the house. They spend the first few weeks in the outbuilding to dry out and cure and then into the house they go for the summer. This year I raised two beds of hard-neck garlic in raised beds near my wooden fence. I plant on November 1 and usually harvest in July. This year I just harvested because of drying plants and the bulbs were smaller. My guess is that they did not get enough sun due to the proximity to the fence on the north side.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm

That could very well be what happened to you. We have noticed the plants that get shaded out do not grow as well. Especially since they're growing over the Winter when sunlight is sparse to begin with.

I would LOVE to see a video on JUST the Cats life... the positives of having more than just one or two cats on the farm? Do they all just show up in the evening to be locked up for the night? I am asking because i only saw the part where they are being let out in the morning. Do they ever bother the chicks or ducklings? Baby Turkeys? Do they really keep the mice or desert rats under control? OK... I probably have more questions but I think I missed something maybe I just need to go back through older videos? Oh... back to the topic... BEAUTIFUL garlic!! Great work!
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 6 ай бұрын
At some point we'll need to give more detail on the cats, but it's still a work in progress for us. We're still trying to work out the kinks in our systems and working on a livestock guardian, so we can keep the cats out all night (when most of their prey is running about!). For now they're mainly catching a few mice, small birds, ground squirrels and very small rabbits. They don't bother any of the farm animals, I assume because they're just too big to be messing with. I imagine the only thing they could really hassle would be newly hatched chicks, but we don't have any roosters on the farm for that to be an issue. Oh and they do come back in the evening when we call them. They're very attached to us, so when we're out there they tend to gravitate towards us. Hence their regular appearance in many of our videos!

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm I love that! :) My family all are very attached to their pet cats, but I was thinking that you had a function in mind, and it sounds like they are performing well. I appreciate seeing animals well cared for regardless of the function. I was raised in a farming community so while my father was in corporate work, my mother won him over to country living and all of our neighbors were into farming Everything!! So, I gravitate toward country living as well. Thanks again for all you share here.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm Ah, thank you so much! Buying it now. 👍 Do you have any concerns that one of your cats might catch a poisoned critter and get sick eating it? Sorry, there is no such thing as over-ripe with garlic. You have secondary sprouting, which some varieties are more prone to than others. Unfortunately, secondary sprouting has been getting worse for most growers over the last ten years, in the varieties that are prone to it. Most growers think that it is due to changing environmental conditions and stress.
