I like the idea of the growbag or bucket, I've done boxes indoors before. In my actual garden, SO many many many mushrooms in an incredible variety of types grow in my beds and elsewhere that I'd never feel sure if get the right ones if i just planted them out. So containers sound good. Very damp climate but chilly in winter and windy almost always. So also good for containers, could bring them into the greenhouse or indoors

I decided to do a lazy mushroom bed out of mulch I had laying around and straw from the bale i bought and now have too much to know what to do with. I meant to buy proper spawn but I never got around to it. Instead I bought some king oysters just to eat but left them in the fridge too long and the mycelium recolonized the mushrooms. Instead so I just chopped them up and distributed them in straw of the bed, thinking nothing would come of it but I just checked and that bed is COVERED in mycelium. Of course we still need to see if it’s king oyster or something else (maybe not edible)

Is there any way that I would be able to set up a discounted mass order on botanical interest? I am a boyscout and am going to try and set up a sort of seed library for my public library for my project and have a limited budget.
@mars7304Ай бұрын
I wanna first tell you as a former scout, this is a tremendous idea and a fantastic way to get the youth in your community more in touch with nature. Don't let any company convince you to buy EVERYTHING from them, someone has better prices on SOMETHING. If nobody from Epic Gardening reaches out to you, check your state's website/ local colleges for Gardening extensions, they'll probably be able to reccomend local discounted/ free seed vaults or libraries you can borrow from! I went to my local state fair this year and got like 6-10 free packets of seed for multiple plants just by asking. Edit: this is coming from someone waiting on an Epic Gardening order to arrive on his doorstep rn, so don't think I'm trying to discourage you!

I added oyster mushroom grain sparn to my garden beds this year. While I will be happy to get actual mushrooms, I mostly did it to improve the soil and give my cabbages better nutrients faster. I got to say that my cabbages and other brassicas love it. I have never had Chinese cabbages Asia’s healthy and fast growing. My kale, collards and lettuces also look better than they ever have. I do home, that we eventually will get some mushrooms too, but even if we don’t, it has been well worth it.

Ordered spawn and I will attempt to grow wine caps in grow bags in the CA high desert (zone 9a ). We have a mostly shady spot beneath the eaves on the east side of the house. There is a large boulder sheltering the area so they might survive even during the warmer months - fingers crossed. My garden beds may receive too much sun and heat most of the year but after watching this video again I may try putting a little of the spawn in the beds to see if it is possible to grow some mushrooms among the plants. That might work until the weather becomes hot. Last year I started a new metal raised bed, used some mulch from the big box store, and grew a bumper crop of inky caps - ugh.

@stormraven4183Ай бұрын
You do not need to cut holes in the bags unless you are using lined bags. The fruiting bodies will grow just fine on the surface of the fabric. The fabric admits plenty of oxygen, and mycelium grows right through it with no issues.
@kirstypollock6811Ай бұрын
Ooh thanks for that!
@stormraven4183Ай бұрын
@kirstypollock6811 the main thing is to keep them moist. With bags, the sides dry out quickly. I get better luck with adding wood fines and some sterile (indoor) potting mix to the straw, then keep the bag somewhere that's protected from direct sun and from wind. You can even put a large recycling (clear) bag loosely over the top & sides until you get good mycelium development. Just be sure to remove it once you begin to see pin out.

This method seems very easy to me! Apparently, it is not necessary to pasteurize or sterilize the substrate first? When I read about mushroom cultivation elsewhere, it is presented as something very important. And that has held me back from starting so far; it seemed like too much hassle
@ashleys63710 күн бұрын
I noticed that you didn't pasteurize/sterilize the chips and straw before using. I keep seeing that recommended, but I don't have an autoclave or anything and the other methods don't seem practical for me either. I did what you all did and just put the straw/chips down as is, and the oyster mushrooms grew fine. It would be interesting to see a test to determine if the pasteurization really does anything for the yield.
@Tinky1rs6 күн бұрын
winecaps are pretty vigourous growers, they prefer unpasteurized substrate I believe. for oysters I think it just gives you better odds of the mycelium winning from other micro-organisms.
