You said it, if Ned would have told Cat, somewhere, somehow it could have slipped and then the rumours begin and grow like weeds.. then Jon's dead for sure... On the other hand, Cat's public hatred and contempt for Jon made his "Ned Starks bastard" status seem very very genuine. This ensured Jon's life and safety. Ned made a decision and made a promise to his sister to protect her son, so he did it at all costs. "If Robert's finds out he will kill him" she said...
@xcsglee7 жыл бұрын
that is correct. anyone outside her blood family that means even sees you on or Jon Snow she doesn't really trust or like. that's why she wishes to the gods Jon Snow would die. she's not a forward thinker he doesn't think wait for a second. she doesn't think to wait for a second Rihanna was kidnapped by raygar and then raped and all the sudden she is dead but. Ned comes back with her dead body and a baby and all the sudden he says it's hills but everybody knows. adults dog is loyal and he doesn't sleep around and everybody knows he tells the truth he has that kind of reputation. so when the baby comes along with his dead sister you don't think it was her baby you think it was him cheating. that's how stupid she is and doesn't think about the bigger picture instead of the only me me me.

If Cat knew Jon was Rhaegar's son, and something would've happened to her family because of Robert or something similar, she would've thrown Jon under the bus to save her children. You know, "FAMILY, Duty, Honor" and all that. Ned promised to keep Jon safe, no matter what. Telling ANYONE the possible heir to the Targaryens was at his home would be a huge risk, no matter who he told.
@AmericanMumReacts7 жыл бұрын

lshe97 No cat would never have done that to her own nephew if she knew. She would have loved him and would have taken care of him. Which would make a lot of people suspicious. Any one of them could have gone to report to robert and then the last promise ned made to lyanna would be futile.
@Kyle-qd2sy7 жыл бұрын
Also remember at the time Cat and Ned hardly knew each other. Cat was promised to Neds older brother and Ned had feelings for woman I believe from House Dayne. Ned and Cat only married to forge an alliance after his brother was killed. They met the day of there wedding. So when Ned returned with Jon he hardly knew Cat and probably wouldn't of trusted her at the time
@runcibusarse-weasel9647 жыл бұрын
It's much simpler than all that: He promised. Ned promised his sister, on her death bed, not to tell anyone. "Promise me, Ned!", her last words. Ned Stark didn't break promises, least of all promises like that.

And thus, Jon becomes the Prince Who Was Promised. ;)

"Love is the death of duty." Ned's duty was to his friend and King, Robert and to his wife, Cat. But his love for his sister over ruled that in his heart. The Honourable Ned Stark became a major player in the greatest lie ever perpetrated in Westeros. He kept his promise his entire life. Popular conjecture is that just before he was executed, he was whispering "I kept my promise."
@marianagomes3367 жыл бұрын
Hi Mum, Ned didn't knew Cat enough to trust her in the beginning of their marriage. Cat was to be married to Ned's older brother Brandon, but he was killed by the mad king. Ned married Cat for duty, he went to war after the wedding. :D

makes sense....
@Leo_ofRedKeep7 жыл бұрын
None of this explains why he kept the secret for 17 years. The actual explanation is that he didn't care.
@Starmongoose19917 жыл бұрын
I think he did care, he simply might have thought it was safer to keep the secret from even Cat. Llyanna begged Ned to keep the secret, and Ned would take that very seriously. But also, since he didn't tell Cat right away about Jon, it might have been a couple of years before he felt he actually trusted her. Then it might have hurt Cat more to to know she had been lied to like that for years, but also what if Cat was so upset she tried to reach out to someone she thought SHE could trust. At that time, it probably would have been her sister, Lysa. And we all know what her connections to people like Littlefinger were.
@Leo_ofRedKeep7 жыл бұрын
There is no indication he cared all that much but it is safe to say he cared for his promise to a dead sister more than for his wife's feelings. As to Jon himself, he let him go to the Wall without even telling him about it. Jon had to learn the truth from Tyrion. His "father" had given him the usual BS about "a great honour" and only showed emotion when Jon asked about his mother. No, Ned Stark never showed he cared much for the living until Varys reminded him of his daughters. I almost wonder if he'd thought of them on his own.
@MrShaiya967 жыл бұрын
Leo of Red Keep A dead sister he's known longer than his arranged marriage wife who is impulsive as hell as we saw in all three first seasons of the show. She has no logic in any of the actions she takes, and Cat never has evidence for the accusations she poses on others. Bitch couldn't be trusted at ANY point.
@soul4saken7 жыл бұрын
True honour, not perceived honour is what Eddard Stark was all about, even to his detriment. He couldn't tell his wife, firstly because he would have broken his oath to his sister on her deathbed, also he had to keep the secret for fear that every person knowing the truth is yet another loose-end, that risks Jon's life ever the more. Eddard didn't care that the perception of his honour was sullied. He cared that true honour involves keeping one's oaths and protecting one's family, above all, even if the perception of his honour is tarnished.
@k9feline26 жыл бұрын
Catelyn's obvious hatred of Jon helped make the lie more credible. Everyone can tell she hates Jon, and so everyone thinks, "Well, of course, he's her husband's bastard." If she had known, she might've reacted differently to Jon, perhaps in a more loving way, that might've made certain people suspicious. Ned's lie and Catelyn's hatred were the twin shields that saved Jon from Robert's wrath.
@ONECrewReacts7 жыл бұрын
Ned needed Cat to hate Jon. Her hate for him was an even greater cover than just Ned's words. Her hating him told the world that he was Ned's bastard and nothing more

At the beginning Ned barely knew Cat, they had just been married when he went to war; later, after years of her hating Jon, Ned probably thought that her knowing that she'd been hating an _"innocent"_ child all along would hurt her unnecessarily... and a change in her attitude towards Jon might have been noticed by people like Varys or Littlefinger; and just imagine if she'd confided in _her sister..._ Littlefinger and probably Jon Arryn would have known immediately, and Robert soon after... telling Cat, sadly, was never a safe option, no matter how much Ned came to love and trust her. :/

Watch Alt Shift X's breakdown of the R+L = J theory (which is no longer just a theory obviously). It really explains the backstory and the motivations, and provides lots of evidence. I think Ned felt that the less people that knew the better. It was too big of a thing to just go around telling people, and Ned did promise his sister to protect Jon. Robert in a fit of rage even threatened Ned because he was against killing Dany in season 1, imagine if he found out Ned knew that Lyanna gave birth to Rhaegar's son, he probably would have not only gone after Ned but his family too. Robert was obsessed with Lyanna. The only people who knew for sure was Ned, and Howland Reed (Meera and Jojen's father) because he was there with Ned, but now Bran knows and it's slightly hinted that Littlefinger may even know.
@MarkHogan9947 жыл бұрын
No, Littlefinger does not know. There's no way he could "know" that Lyanna was pregnant, or that Jon is her son. What that scene in the crypts was meant to indicate is that Littlefinger is smart enough to know that things aren't always what they appear to be, and even though Robert thinks (or chooses to think) that Rhaegar kidnapped and raped Lyanna, that may not be the truth. LF simply realizes that the truth is probably more complicated, and that's the purpose of that scene. To make us realize the same thing.
@francois56307 жыл бұрын
At that time Littlefinger was a teenager, he was not an adult yet. He only guess that Lyanna followed Rhaegar on her own will.
@925lexi7 жыл бұрын
Francois C I am aware of that. I was referencing the scene in the Winterfell crypts with Sansa. The look he gave her says he probably knows more than he's letting on or at least has his suspicions, as he did call Jon, "a bastard born in the south". The story he told of the winter roses Rhaegar placed in Lyanna's lap after riding by his wife Elia Martell could why he suspected that it might not have been kidnap but the two could've ran off together. Either way he obviously doesn't believe the story Robert and all of Westeros seem tell about R+L.
@deborahgarrett29977 жыл бұрын
925lexi Yes, all true. And remember how uncomfortable Ned would become ANY time the Targaryen name was mentioned, and his sister's as well (with Robert especially) Can't wait until Bran (or Sam, Howland Reed, Littlefinger etc) finally spills the beans!

Laura Angela Yeah. Most viewers had the 10 months after Jon's death in the season 5 finale. None of knew for sure if he would be brought back. That is when this 20 year algebra (R+L=J) theory soared the internet. Many were convinced that he was coming back because of the overwhelming evidence this theory consisted of. He could he be dead, what about his parentage? Plus the fact Mellisandre had just shown up at the wall. The actor himself LIED to everyone and said he wasn't coming back for season 6, that his contract expired, that now he was going to do more movies so he was happy. LIAR! But Kit apologized for lying and we forgave him. Remember that?

I think people have a hard time understanding the view of someone seeing all this for the very first time. AM, 95% of the people yelling about R+L=J did not come up with that on their own. They were told it, and so the scenes that hinted at it became much more obvious. Don't sweat anything. So happy you've caught up, can't wait for your season 7 reactions!
@derred7237 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I actually did figure it out but it was ENTIRELY in the process of yanking one thread and the whole sweater unraveling. I kept watching that scene where they are on the kingsroad and Rob asks what's the name of the bastards mother along with rewatching Little Finger and Varys conversations. But the theory came after 5 years or rewatching things. And laying out a family tree and using logic. plus i'm a lawyer so i tend to decipher what people say to see i they are lying as a profession. One thread leads to another. One logic flaw makes you ask a question., and another. In fact i was TRULY stunned to find out there were multiple reddit threads and fan theories about the theory. But point is it took my 4 years to figure it out on my own! And 4 years entirely avoiding book spoilers. Just trying to decipher the tv show. Only a fool would expect her to get it blowing through episodes in a month.

The scene in which Ned proclaims himself a traitor in front of the crowd at winterfell is key to his character, its showing that in the end Ned cared more about his family than his own honor, he proclaimed himself a traitor in order to protect Sansa, just as he also stained his legacy in order to protect Jon. Ned put his family above all else, and honor meant nothing in comparison

I don't blame you for not catching it right away. The only reason most show viewers knew about R+L = J was because it was discussed everywhere, and the theory spread. It was THE popular theory. Most people were just waiting for the confirmation in the finale. People who never read any external information or discussions regarding it were not as quick to catch on to the fact that Rhaegar had to be the father. While there are many conversational hints throughout the show they are easily lost and forgotten in everything else that's going on unless you take notes, analyze, re-watch, or read discussions... I re-watched the series and was able to organically pick up on a lot more the second time around and there are many new things to be appreciated. Thank you for putting yourself out there! I've really enjoyed your GoT journey. You've been a delight to watch. :)

Also remember Lyanna saying to Ned "Promise me..." before she died. I think she asked that he promise not to tell anyone and Ned felt duty-bound to keep it a secret. I think Ned did intend to tell Jon once he joined the Watch because then Jon would be untouchable in a sense and would know his true ancestry. Lastly, I do not think Rhaegar raped Lyanna. I think they were in love. The way Barristan describes Rhaegar, he doesn't seem like a bad guy. Also, Lyanna is described as being feisty and a bit wild like Arya. She was a fighter, not one to be easily physically overcome by a man.

Some of the biggest tells in the books come from internal dialogue and flashback memories so it's easier to piece together. When I read the books for a second time, only then did I see all the easter eggs. One of the biggest tells is when Ned never calls Jon his son, he just says, you're a Stark, that's all that matters.

I can't remember the dialogue in the TV show, but I think in the books it's implied that Lyanna made Ned promise to her that he would never reveal Jon's identity. Maybe that's why he didn't even tell Cat. He was protecting his sister's honour.

Ned Stark's confession scene - see how hard it was for the very honorable Eddard Stark to have to detrade himself by lying. But he did so for his children.

Don't let it bother you that you didn't get it right away. The only reason everyone else knew when the big reveal dropped is because the R+L=J theory had been around since the very first book was released 20 years ago. Then those who read the books brought the theory to the show when it started, and those who only watched the show had 5 YEARS to let that theory grow in their minds. You've watched the whole series in a short amount of time, going in with NO spoilers, which is amazing. I'm willing to bet that anyone else in your situation would have been just as confused. You keep doing what you're doing, American Mum. You're awesome, and I can't wait to see you react to season 7. :)

mum, i found the following words on a web site. they go along with what i myself have for some time thought about why Ned didn't tell Catelyn about Jon.... Catelyn is not an evil woman. She's a strong matriarch that just wanted to keep her family together, and Jon's presence makes her think she's failed. If she had known who Jon's real parents were, she would have undoubtedly been warm and motherly toward him. Then, everyone who knows Catelyn would know that something was off...( it would draw unwanted and dangerous attention.) my own words in parenthesis.

I think part of the reason Ned never told Catelyn is that her antipathy to Jon was part of the cover story. If she all of a sudden started acting nice to Jon, it may have attracted attention and could have caused others to look into Jon's parentage. Ned wasn't willing to take that risk. He put his family above his honour, just like he did when confessing to treason to protect his daughters in the lead up to his execution.

Although I do believe in what Cat said because Jon Snow is believed to be the prince that was promised and after all that she did that war is what came along. If you notice also this was mentioned in a theory, it seemed like Jon Snow is being protected somehow, no matter how many arrows hit no matter how he gets closer to death in those shots he never gets hit. Oh, also Ned only wanted talk about Jon's mom now that he was safe. Him going to the wall meant that he is invulnerable to Robert Baratheon which would make sense why Ned waited this long.

Most of us probably watched each season more than once in the big gaps between seasons. So we had more of a chance to pick up on stuff that we missed. I realized early on that every word in the show is important :) . thx mom

A.M. will you be uploading edited videos of your reactions to 9 and 10? (Sorry if this has been addressed somewhere in the comments already.)

Fact is, even if Cat wouldn't have said anything. There is always the possibility that other people would have found out from her still. By literally never telling anyone (not even Jon himself), Ned has literally been safeguarding the single best-kept secret in Westeros and literal game-changer for the last 20 years...and also ensuring his sister's dying wish remains granted.

Regarding the hints and figuring it out, there are _many_ more hints in the books, which is where R+L=J came from... although it's not yet confirmed, and there are other theories with similar amounts of evidence (such as Jon being the product of an affair between Ned and Ashara Dayne, sister of Ser Arthur Dayne, who Ned fought at the Tower of Joy). In the show, however, almost everyone regards Eddard Stark as one of the most honourable men in Westeros, and what we see of him seems to confirm that he puts honour before _anything_ but family... which, combined with people who knew Rhaegar (and who aren't Robert Baratheon) describing him as someone very unlikely to commit rape... but quite likely to have an affair, _Arya,_ of all people, being compared to Lyanna both in looks and character, and the whole affair at the tourney in Harrenhal where Rhaegar crowned Lyanna queen of love and beauty instead of his wife Elia Martell... makes the official stories of Rhaegar kidnapping and raping Lyanna, and of Ned Stark fathering a bastard, sound more and more unlikely; together, they might not be enough to confirm Jon's parentage, but they're enough to theorise (particularly when you take into account that Rhaegar left half the Kingsguard, including _Ser Arthur Friggin' Dayne,_ the closest thing to a nuclear option in Westeros since the dragons died off, guarding Lyanna at the Tower of Joy instead of having them fight at the Trident, where they might have changed the fate of the war).

My mom and I watched this episode together. I've read the books and I was fully aware of the theory beforehand - and I knew perfectly well what was about to happen when we entered the tower, all together. But when that shot of the baby turns into Jon Snow, my mom asked "Wait, that can't be him, so who is it?". For non-book readers, especially those who have watched the show as it has come out (year after year) it is already so difficult keeping track of the characters! And in this scene, you are not only being asked to recognize the young actor as a young Ned Stark, you're also being asked to know about Lyanna, who you've only ever seen as a statue before. And then besides that, you have to remember Rhaegar, a character never shown in GoT and only ever referred to! And his name isn't even mentioned in this scene, so you have to think back to clues as far back as season 1 to know all of this, in the span of maybe five minutes. No wonder some people's reaction is "wait what" rather than "ah, R + L = J, how obvious!".
