After reading the books, it’s so obvious how all the problems with the show arose when they ran out of material and started writing for themselves. Almost all of the memorable dialogue from early seasons is directly out of the books, and it’s clear D&D simply couldn’t write to the quality of GRRM. Makes you wonder what would have happened with the show if GRRM had stayed on his original pace and finished ahead of the show.

@@shanouboubou hey, i saw this argument come up very often. While i do agree that there is enough Material in the 4 and 5 book to make 2 seasons instead of one, this would also habe resulted in a more boring experience. So d&d would then have to come up with filler storys for the main characters (dany, jon, sansa) to inclued the aspects of the books that were cut out like the real dorne plot or Aegon 2. They probably wcraped that idea since they probably didnt like doing it like in season 4 with jon. I think they should have just increased the episode runtime to 1h 10 mins to accomodate the rest of the books and increase their budget to 10 mil like season 6 and it would have been perfect. The real thing however still is that grrm is lazy and doesnt publish winds of winter and his other books.

The bigger issue is that they're just not great writers, One of them was behind the terrible Deadpool change in the Xmen Origins Wolverine movie. They suck at anything that isn't a near direct adaption. They actually had a huge amount of book material they skipped which is the bigger issue. Jon Snow in S5 is a much better character then Tyrion in S5 because Jon Snow's story is still somewhat similar to his book arc, while Tyrion's story is drastically different. The exclusion of Young Griff/Aegon in Tyrion's story leads to alot of end game problems later, and the exclusion of Tyrion's Tysha reveal at the end of S4 hurts his character development. Ironically S5 is the season he won his emmy, despite having nothing to do, so it just goes to show that critics don't really care much about the actual quality of the show.

In the books, there is a peasant northen girl named Jeyne Poole she is the daughter of a servant and Sansa's friend. When the Lannisters kill Ned Stark and take Sansa as hostage, Littlefinger take Jeyne Poole to his brothels to make her a prostitute. A lot of time later (the equivalent to seasons 4-5) they send this peasant girl to the North claiming she is ARYA Stark so the Boltons could have a legit claim as Wardens of the North. In the books this kickstarts a lot of people to fight the Boltons (Stannis, Jon, Manderly, etc), so they can save little Ned's girl. Meanwhile Sansa spends all this time rising her influence on the Vale. Since Jeyne Poole doesn't exists in the series and the Vale plot is still going on the books, Dumbass&Dumber thought it was a great idea to put Sansa in the plot of Jeyne, mixing two arcs in one...

The stuff with the vale would've worked fine as it is if upon Sansa telling Jon, he refuses the help because he doesn't trust Littlefinger. Which I mean, who would? The guy has a history of backstabbing people when he has no further use for them. However he is the key to one of the largest armies left in Westros. Sometimes you just have to play with the hand you have been dealt. That way the Vale coming in to save the day would be painted as Sansa going behind Jons back. And a lot better than what we actually got. As now there is realistic tension between Jon and Sansa. As Jon is an honorable fool like his Uncle. While Sansa is willing to secure wins. Honor be damned. This also helps showcase that Sansa is indeed learning from Littlefinger. But instead it is a deux ex machina and the tension between Jon and Sansa feels forced. For the actual battle itself in this scenario, it needs to be framed better. Jon surviving improbable odds is beyond realistic. Even for a fantasy series.

13:00 The Dragon Demands KZbin channel explained from DVD commentary and other behind the scenes stuff that there was a twist in the original script, most likely that the Umbers and possibly other houses defect cuz it would go over the point that is still foreshadowed in the final cut that if you betray people like the Boltons did, other people are gonna resent them for it and look to screw them over, however per director Miguel Sapochnik's interview D&D would not listen to his obvious advice that what they wanted for the amount of days they set aside was unfilmable and he had to fight them so hard to use less one takes of the "Commander" Jon Snow SILENTLY walking around the battlefield making stressed faces to Emmy-bait and got them use more wide shots to establish that huge set they put together to make things actually look interesting and put the scale of the battle into perspective

I like how Sansa was turned into a bloodlusting psychopath who CHOSE to let almost everyone die for absolutely no reason other than her own amusement, I reckon. And the possible idea that she did it to (again, like a psychopath) so she could be considered the one who saved the day is simply false to begin with, because in a rational scenario, if she did that, everyone would consider her guilty of all the deaths because she withheld the most crucial information in the lives of everyone who died on that field. They literally didn't have to die there, but Sansa decided that they will.

That's exactly how it looks like to me. If she prioritized getting Rickon back alive, she would have told him. But the way we see LF make Sansa accept his help is by talking her into being against Jon. In their conversation after Sansa escapes Boltons, he highlights that their army is JON'S army (when Sansa says "we have an army"), and that Jon is her half-brother, not her brother, implying he isn't trustworthy. It's pretty clear that Sansa wanted her own army and, like you said, be seen as the one who saves the day (she brings this up later and looks disappointed+looks at LF when Jon is credited for the win and crowned King in the North. It made Sansa look like she was trying to get rid of Rickon, who would be first in the line of succession since Bran is believed to be dead, and Jon who is still a male elder sibling of hers who has an army loyal to her only. And get rid of "Jon's army" at the same time while at it so she has more men rally behind her. Whole a lot of "I only care about and trust my family and the North!" from someone who without any grief or regret lets Rickon be killed when there's a chance to save him with the Knight of the Vale, going against Jon more than just once, and the whole thing she had with Arya in season 7 (which people believe was an act but it wasn't, Bran's actor reveals that in a deleted scene Sansa came to him to ask for advice whether or not execute Arya and that's where he tells her it's LF behind it all - not very family loving of her, eh?) The first thing we learned about Sansa was that she wanted a fary tale and wanted to be Queen. That part of wanting to be queen, damn whoever gets hurt in the process, never changed.

Medieval battles are rare, if ever, portrayed right in big budget stuff. They always depict hordes of idiots slamming into each other and forming a melee mosh-pit where characters can 1v1 people. That's NOT how medieval battles worked. They formed regiments, maneuverer, retained formation. The most prominent tactic was getting your enemy to break ranks and formation, because then they were at your mercy during a route. Also, cavalry charges don't work like that!!! In medieval battles, infantry are typically the anvil and cavalry are the hammer. No medieval commander who wasn't a lobotomized leper would throw expensive, highly valuable cavalry away in a head-on charge against OTHER cavalry in the CENTRE of a battle!! They use their speed and manoeuvrability to swing around on flanks, fight off the other cavalry and charge into the rear/flanks of enemy infantry blocks that are engaged with your own infantry, causing a panic and a route. That isn't even going into the Northern Lords on Ramsey's side seeing Ramsey arrowing their own troops indiscriminately and still remaining loyal to him. The Northern Lords! The North, a realm famed for its rowdy, hard-to-rule lords, just watches this giggling psychopath kill their own men and they're fine with it! Just wth?! Jfc the Battle of the Bastards was so mind-meltingly stupid. There's more, but the godawful pile of crap was a hallmark of things to come in the Long Night.
@kingstannisbaratheon79747 ай бұрын
I agree with 90% of what you say except for the charging infantry with heavy cavalry. It did happen quite often to varying effects. On the one hand if you had undisciplined infantry vs well organised heavy cavalry, the cavalry would likely break the line or even rout the formation before making contact, the Normans for example did this quite well pretty often. On the other hand, if the line held or the cavalry became disorganised then they'd just end up ineffectually swatting at the formation from outside their reach or retreating for another charge. This sort of thing began to happen more and more towards the end of the medieval era which is why it gave way to the trecios. I agree totally with everything else, specifically that the battle of the Bastards is definitely a terrible depiction of any warfare let alone medieval warfare.

@Paul Gauthier Was Edmure even a putz though? Throughout the show he's constantly in situations he can't really control, or is treated like dogsh*t by everyone around him despite showing competence in his various duties. The show butchers a lot of his character from what I've read, which isn't surprising at all given the writers idiocy. And yes Sansa had no right shutting him down like she did. During the "election" for the next king at the end of the show, Edmure was likely the best candidate for ruler. He's educated, experienced and actually f*cking gives a damn about the people he rules over already. If i ever wanted to slap Sansa across the face with a golden hand, it was during that disrespectful, uppity moment where she kills what little shred of dignity Edmure had left in the show, utterly disgraceful.

With the Arya situation, I can only assume she wasn't supposed to be injured so much at first, but they changed it later without changing the rest of the action. Maybe Arya was supposed to put up more of a fight, but they wanted to add more tension to the scene. And then they just kinda forgot to make it make sense. And then they just realized they wrote themselves into a corner, so they abandoned the plotline completely.

One very small criticism: the dusty mixture of pulverized hay and dung that would cover the floor of any Dothraki tent is HIGHLY flammable. Maybe I thought about it more than Dumbarse & Dipsh*t- but I think that **Arya** was _the Waif’s_ final test; when she said ‘You promised me’, instead of some neutral third party speaking style, like ‘A man made a promise to a girl’ - Jaqen could have then told the triumphant Arya that the Waif failed _her_ test (she didn’t look like a full-fledged Faceless Man, to me- this was my reasoning), but nope- there’s no clarity about the situation. A lot of people think that Arya should have Faceless Men on her arse because of her actions, & without my headcanon- I agree... All they had to do to fix the Battle of the Bastards, was have Sansa tell Jon that more men are coming- they just have to hold on - that way, we still get the ex-machina, without the stupidity. The thing with ShowBaelish’s endgame is absurd- he’s a behind-the-scenes man - being the power behind the throne suits him down to the ground; he wants to be the puppet-master- in control, & not liable- unless I’ve been reading him wrong. From what I’ve read (& maybe I’m reading it wrong), he’s aiming for he & Sansa to be a dark version of Elizabeth I & Walsingham/ Dudley- to have ultimate control behind the scenes, & have this massive positive propaganda machine around the heroine; she can be betrothed/ marry for advantage, but he will always be the one constant in her life - having ripped her family apart, & made her totally dependent on him- she owes all elevation to his efforts. However, he doesn’t know her thoughts- & that may prove his downfall; she *hasn’t* rid herself of her connection to her family, nor their core beliefs- & she’s thinking about Jon more than ever. BookSansa will come to a point where she will lift herself up, for her own sake- or, give Baelish enough room to hang himself, figuratively speaking...

To be fair, if Ramsay knew a big force is coming (mainly cavalry), he could have fortified Winterfell, and if they would have to besiege the fortress, it might have never fallen. Certainly not in time before the Wall falls. It actually played out better this way, and Sansa might have thought that Jon is a bit more careful (the original battleplan was to lure the Boltons out, revealing the availability of a large cavalry would have prevented that). I actually think Ramsay was the bigger idiot in the battle. He sacrificed his entire cavalry without a second thought (which is obviously the best part of a medieval army), so I don't know how he planned to face future enemies, especially since Lord Karstark supposedely led the cavalry charge. It was incredible that they did not notice such a large army marching up to Winterfell. And I know that the Bolton soldiers are basically soulless drones, but would they really follow someone who orders them to shoot each other or orders an arrowstorm on your head?
@reinoudvanosselaer57392 жыл бұрын
They could have used the same tactics tho if Jon knew the knights of the Vale were coming. Just act as if you have a small army, lure Ramsay out and then surprise attack him. @Edmures_rampant_manhood2 жыл бұрын
@@reinoudvanosselaer5739 exactly. Something significant I believe you missed, at the beginning of Episode 9: Episode 8 ended with Dany getting back to Meereen, in the middle of the night, while under attack, and she landed on the top of the pyramid instead of dealing with the attackers first.... And so Episode 9 begins with the attackers still pelting at the city, and Dany just watches from the pyramid, sun already risen, and Tyrion decides then to start speaking of a plan, of which Dany shuts down, taking more time to speak down on Tyrion instead of doing _ANYTHING_ to defend the city she's supposed to take care of. Through the end of the night to past-sunrise, she's done nothing. EDIT: Another thing from the Battle of the Bastards -- When the Stark army is surrounded, the giant literally stands around, waving and throwing his arms around, swatting the spears away sometimes, only every now and then standing on someone or ripping one -- Only one -- Bolton soldier in half. The giant did nothing otherwise those few minutes, when he could've destroyed at least several Boltons in an instant, assuming they would've sniped him so quickly.

Jon being name King of The North should’ve been a big problem. I know so many people think he will be King in the North in the books. I don’t think it will happen since Bran, Rickon, Sansa, and Arya are all still alive. Davos is literally on is way to get Rickon in TWOW. Plus why would the Northerners name Jon, a bastard and deserter of the Night’s Watch (that is seen punishable and dishonorable) name him King, when Sansa is right there and with Rickon dead, and Bran (& Arya) missing. That makes Sansa the true heir to Winterfell. It literally makes no sense, and even if Robb does name Jon his heir in the books with Robb’s will still haven’t been revealed yet. It going to cause chaos once Sansa and Rickon return (they are more likely to be at Winterfell first then Bran or Arya) because why would the Northerners let a bastard rule over them than Ned Stark true born children??? Also I hate the way they handle Rickon death and treating like it wasn’t a big deal. None of his siblings even mourned for their little brother death. It made no sense for Sansa to not tell Jon that she could easily call for reinforcements from Baelish. For one, I guess her thought process was that he doesn’t trust Baelish for his reputation of being untrustworthy. But even then, that minor problem is exactly that, minor. Meaning the most that that reason could last as a barrier between Jon and reinforcements is perhaps an argument or two between Sansa and Jon. And I could understand that perhaps Sansa was doing this in the hopes that Jon would die in the battle so that with Ramsay’s forces depleted she could then come in and pick away at what is left. But at no point in the show has she been indicated as someone who either hates Jon or is exactly power hungry. Yes she wanted to be queen but only because she thought Joffrey was good looking. Aside from that the very idea that the Eerie could arrive to aid Sansa just in time to help her win the Battle of the Bastards makes no sense when in earlier seasons it took Arya and the Wolf, just 2 people the spam of a few whole episodes to reach the Eerie. Also Jon throughout that whole battle should have died at multiple points but doesn’t. I remember when this show killed off people and they stayed dead. Jon Snow dying at the end of season 5 while upsetting and shocking at first, made sense Snow in the eyes of many of his men betrayed everything the Nights Watch stand for so for him to be betrayed and killed was honestly a good send off to his character as it reinforces how for people to survive in this world honor will not get them far. Plus, Snow doesn’t do anything important after season 5 anyway as Sansa in my opinion should have been the one to take back Winterfell by herself. Along with Lady Brienne’s help she could have gone across the North to find other houses that are willing to back her up like Jon did and then get Baelish’s army to aid her to. I mean if you ask me she should have gone forward to her fellow lords and ladies of the eerie and confessed who killed her aunt and then take control through manipulation tactics Baelish used on her on her cousin. She’d then have control over the Eerie. And now with all of these people behind her she takes back Winterfell making her revenge on Ramsay all the more satisfying. Jon Snow had no reason to continue after season 5.

Maybe a reason for Sansa keeping Little Finger around for as long as she did is because he did save her life twice. Well, he did kind of put her in those situations. He helped Olenna get the poison that killed Joffrey and it was his obsession with Sansa that caused Lysa to try to kill her. In many ways, he actually put her in more dangerous situations than anybody else, at least show wise.

@@jedimasters1462 Sansa would never not be in danger because of who she was. She was already in danger because of Joffrey. He was only getting worse. Little Finger did, from her point of view, rescue her from that situation. He also made the choice to kill her aunt instead of letting her kill Sansa, from Sansa's point of view. He messed up, in her eyes, when he bid her to marry Bolton. Before that she trusted him. She chose to stay with him instead of going with Brienne. After the Bolton experience she told Bailish that he either knew Ramsey was a monster or he didn't know and was stupid. Naivete is something she could hold forgiveness for considering her own lead her to King's Landing in the first place. Once he started poisoning her against Arya, and Bran told them about Ned.. it was over. From a little girl's perspective she held some sort of esteem for him, in the way she kinda did for Cersei too.

2:14 Before that scene, when Jorah and Daario find her, she mentions to one of the dosh khaleen that she will need her help, iirc. It's safe to assume that that help meant covering the floor in something highly flammable.

Arya getting stabbed in the gut multiple times, complete with a twist of the knife. Dead. Jon alone getting charged by cavalry, targeted by hundreds of archers, and then trampled by his own men. Dead. Sansa and Theon jumping off a huge wall onto frozen ground that looks like it's covered by a light dusting of snow. Dead. Sansa and Theon wading through chest deep ice cold water and then not warming up or changing their clothes. Dead again. In my mind the Starks were pretty much all gone by the end of season 6.

Then there was the battle with the white walkers, where literally all the main characters died, but were saved by simply being cut off camera before we saw them die.
