Got trapped in a venturi, but was able to escape...

Flying Ellenville after a small front just passed that developed sudden high winds, got me trapped in a venturi area. At some point I was flying backwards with full VG on a Wills Wing Sport 2...Kept calm and got focused o not losing position and altitude and eventually was able to escape that area and landed safely... good learning experience...

That is not a venturi. It is called a wind gradient. Wind at altitude will typically always be stronger. So always be careful of that and also changes in direction.

Looked more like you hit a shear at higher altitudes. A Venturi is when air is forced through a narrower and narrower opening. Like in a city with tall buildings.

I believe Ricardo is right. Venturi is also caused when wind flows over the curvature of a mountain summit, similar to air flowing and increasing speed over the top of a curved wing

@@falllinefreddy9535 if there was a blocking element yes. But in this case it’s likely just a wind gradient as elevation is increased.

I agree looks more like a gradient too high from obstacles narrowing channels. Yes could of pulled in the speed bar for better penatration but got the job done.

why didn't you pull the speed-bar backwards a bit towards your knees? if wind speed picks up the pilot has to fly faster as well! i did not see you once pull back the bar accordingly. You had enough height and could have anticipated that the wind down might be a bit less. at least that's my opinion from watching the video (which i liked btw)

every time I increased the pull, the altitude loss was significant and the penetration very small…

Great job battling the wind sheer. A Venturi would be in a canyon. I bet you could have penetrated the sheer and gone up to 10k !

What kind of glider? It doesn't look like you were flying with full VG by simply looking at the length of the VG line.

An Sport 2, yes the VG line was not completely “free” so cannot be seen behind me…

Next time, don't stay at that altitude. Pull in and get to a lower altitude where the wind isn't as strong (wind gradient is lower). Google it, or ask your instructor.
