It was rigged from the start. He hated that Tyrion killed his wife from birth. Jamie can further their house because he is the eldest son and was well gifted in combat and can marry anyone to immediately make a strong bond with any other house. His daughter became queen which gave his house a rise in status automatically just for being a queen. Tyrion has nothing that can compete with those by default so he sees no potential for Tyrion

@Stephen Coyle I wouldn't call Tyrion politically savy, not by any figment of the imagination. Though the show whitewashed Tyrion quite a bit, many of his idiotic moves and neglections remain in the HBO characterization of him. Though Tywin's perception is certainly skewed because of his personal hate/love for Tyrion, Tyrion certainly did nothing (with the exception of his battle strategy) to improve the Lannisters position in KL and certainly contributed for later problems happening down the line

And then certain rules don't exist for being broken whenever it suits you. Furthermore, the 10,000 men on the battlefield at least have the opportunity to defend themselves. Besides, Tywin is wrong about one thing. It's not fear that holds a kingdom together. it is mutual trust. Fear at best is used to discourage criminal impulses. And I don't mean holding hands and singing songs and proclaim friendship. Trust is relative. To give you an example, when Tywin threatened Lord Farman with the rains of Castamere, the latter has'nt simply afraid of him, but TRUSTED him. He trusted that Tywin was morally capable of carrying out the threat, he trusted that Tywin had the resources to carry out the threat, and above all he trusted that if he stopped causing problems Tywin would let him live. What do you think Lord Farman would have done if he thought Tywin would kill him anyway even if he stopped making trouble?

It’s what makes his character so interesting, he’s not just some mindless tyrant, his words are calculated and purposeful like every decision he makes. I think what was great was how Tyrion looked at him (like many) as a war lord, a Man of Power...but finding shae in his bed, finding him sat on a toilet, You realise like Tyrion that he’s just another man. And things like, ‘How is it more noble to kill 10,000 men in battle but a dozen at dinner’ in its own way is a good point, but he was also willing to let the north be slaughtered by the wildings. seeing him make statements and decisions you begin to understand how he thinks which makes him more intimidating and threatening. You or I may think ‘but that’s dishonourable’ yet he calls it ‘winning’ That kind of depth is missing from the characters still in the show.

@@omhh1986 I actually don’t know…I thought it sounded smart at the time. Tywin would just do whatever it takes to win, he looked for opportunities to gain an advantage and had no morale barrier but would also give off the stature of something otherwise. I think what I was trying to say when Tyrion challenged Tywin on the reason he ‘slaughtered a few hundred at dinner instead of 10,000 on a battlefield’ was that Tywin knows that’s bullshit but it’s his whole persona of justifying his actions. He’d definitely wipe 10,000 people if it gave him a benefit (as I believe somewhere he actually suggests he is willing to let the wildlings take the north) He constantly belittled Tyrion for his lust of women and whores and yet really Tywin was just the same (more so in the books as it’s suggested Tywin actually built the tunnels that lead to the brothel) He’s complex, that’s what makes him and all the other characters interesting. By season 7/8 all that has evaporated and all the personality of the characters becomes superficial, I think that’s the point I was trying to make

Tywin was an evil man to Tyrion. Actualy, none of his childrens like him, but all of them respect him. It's doing a "funny" contrast with his own father, who was loved but not respected by his childrens. Tywin was as hard as his father was weak. The best part of him died with his wife. He couln't bond with his childrens, who have falling apart under pressions and in the Tywin's shadow. He was a Patriarch and not a father, a lord before everything else, a true tyran. And like every tyran, what he has build has falling appart after his dead. Tywin was a great man, it's true, but he wasn't a good man.

He has never teamed up with anyone competent. The fact that he hated Tyrion because he was a dwarf and blamed him for the death of his wife shows that he was immature in nature. Then he himself was cruel to those he considered inferior. Furthermore, he was apathetic, superficial, he regarded everything that was immoral in society as universal rules of life, and never thought about the long-term consequences of what he did. With the Red Wedding he may have defeated the Starks in THAT war, but at the same time he has destroyed any possibility of diplomacy for any future war against the North, creating an emotional divide between North and South that can never be healed. Furthermore, with Tywin in power, men like Walder Frey, Roose Bolton, and Gregor Clegane could commit all the crimes and evils they wanted without being punished, as long as they did them for his benefit. And then he had an extremely pessimistic view of life. Ok, his father was a doormat, but being too strict is just as harmful as being too flexible. Tywin may have brought the Lannisters to power, but at the same time he also planted the seeds of their fall, precisely because in his rise Tywin filled his family with enemies who then did not hesitate to take advantage of his death to take revenge for the wrongs suffered. After all, whose fault was it that Dorne hated the Lannisters? Whose fault is it that the North hated the Lannisters? Whose fault was it that the riverlands hated the Lannisters? Whose fault was it that the Targaryens hated the Lannisters? Tywin also filled the court with traitors, turncoats, and people who bowed to him with gnashed teeth. And in fact what he created had such weak foundations that killing it was enough to make it collapse like a house of cards. As Ultron would say, Tywin confusing peace with quiet.

Tywin instead tried to desensitize public opinion to things like the sack of King's Landing and the Red Wedding. Furthermore, Tywin's methods only worked in the short term.
