I really enjoy the specialty guitar reviews. I wouldn’t want a normal full size guitar anymore but I do have some interest in mini guitar and guitarleles. Not that I am buying one anytime soon but they are pretty cool…..thanks DOC

I bought a parlour. Reason: I don't play standing up and parlours are ideal for playing them sitting on the sofa or on the porch. Downside: They don't look so cool, but a dreadnaught is far too big for me anyway.

Seriously - that one in the video is a G45 - I also own a J45 which (for me at least) is one of the best Dreadnoughts ever made. The G version is about ⅓ of the price, and honestly.. is far closer in tone than I like to admit!

I think this compliments uke reviews nicely. Would love to see a review of Outdoor Ukulele guitars. Durability and small size makes them interesting.

I'd love to - but doubtful - took me 12 years to get an Outdoor on the site but that was only because a UK dealer took a chance on the ukes and loaned me one. He doesn't stock guitars - Outdoor would need to send me one, but they have never answered my requests.

I don’t know if you’ve ever tried the Gretsch Jim Dandy parlor, but for a small cheap all ply guitar, it sounds pretty decent. I love mine.

I was eyeing up this very guitar a couple of years ago, but for one reason or another - ironically - I went for a Caramel baritone uke. I’m now mildly interested in this Aria again: partly as a “travel” guitar, but also for its sound, which I think sounds quite “alt-folk”-like. Listen to “The Rooster Moans” by Iron & Wine, or “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver - that sort of thin, almost banjo-like tone. If I have some spare cash (or can find a secondhand bargain), I wouldn’t mind one of these - thanks for the review!

Personally i'd hang on for my review of the Gretsch Jim Dandy - small, same old timey voice, but MUCH better

I've got the nylon strung version of this guitar (Aria ASA 18HC ?) which I think has a much nicer tone - warmer and less jangly - and suits the compact body size better. It's also an easier crossover for uke players more used to nylon strings. It's a great little guitar to keep within easy reach at home or take on a trip without worrying about the odd knock. You're right about the scruffy finish and poor tuners, but hey, you get what you pay for. Thanks for all your reviews Baz.
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 2 жыл бұрын
I can fully imagine a nylon strung version working better. Not enough body size here to drive the steel strings I don't think.

@conradreyes5391 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this video, would it also sound better if installed by nylon strings?
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 8 ай бұрын
Whilst it may sound less thin, it's not built for those strings, so I wonder if they would have enough power to drive the top enough
@mrclumsyishungover

Not surprised by the sound and quality noted here...Must admit I didn't have a lot of luck or love with my Aria 151 Mtn parlour and much fuller sounds can be had with a lot of other parlours and for not much more than the Aria.

They can - but i guess the plus point here IS the low price - sort of thing I would sling in the car if I went camping and not care too much. Reckon it would take slide very well too

@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 2 жыл бұрын
Not just your end Mark - it's a thin thin tone - with no bottom end. Saying that - I genuinely could see me throwing this in the back of a car and going camping with it and not worrying. Drunk campfire sing-songs don't need Gibson dreadnoughts! Important point is - it plays like a guitar should. Tone may be paper thin, but it works

Not too bad, I suppose. Soundwise it's for me a bit like comparing a grand piano with a harpsichord. I'm sure there are much better Parlour Guitars about, in fact I know there are, because I bought one. 🙃 Great you added reviews about these guitars also 🙂

@libelle8124 2 жыл бұрын
@@GotAUkulele Exactly! There are much worse guitars about. I recently watched a video of somebody testing one from Big A and it started to make noises as if imploding and the bridge ripping off while he was tuning it. For camping and trying guitar out, I'd say it's good. I borrowed somebody's guitar for a few days until I bought my own. Loving guitar as much as I love ukulele now. Depending on which I practise/play first it feel like going from a 30 Truck to going to a small car 🙂

I bought a Jasmine mini dreadnought short scale quitar that was a return at $US 50. Solid spruce top and quite resonate with good base. Never a fan of standard sized dreadnaughts but “travel” minis can be quite expensive. It is far better than this Aria and at its regular price quite competitive. The gig bag is a dust cover and the tuners could be better but for that price buying decent ones is not a big investment if the guitar bones are good.

For that money, I can forgive the boxy tone and sloppy polish... but wonky tuners are a deal-breaker. They can render an instrument un-playable. BTW, in the close-up of the slotted headstock, the 6th-string tuner axle looked crooked. Tsk, tsk.
